We were staying in a casa in Cóbreces and fancying an evening meal we wandered down to El Refugio. We were ushered into the restaurant and were the only people there until another couple arrived. There was only an a la carte menu available in the evening. The food took ages to arrive and was clearly all out of the freezer and then fried. We had soggy fish which was really miserable. The waitress was sweet, but the other staff member seemed to deliberately avoid contact.

We had lunch. 2 kids and us. The kid's menu more expensive (ok, tricky). All in all, more than average cooking. Finally, they made a mistake in the bill and didn't like having to correct it.
Beware, Coke and beer not included in the menu (14€).
First and last time here :S

We stayed for just 3 nights at El Refugio in Cobreces, near Comillas, N. W. Spain. The Hotel was welcoming, clean and comfortable, we had a lovely terrace overlooking the cove and the sea. Abraham, who seems to do everything, speaks excellent English and is very helpful with local knowledge; plenty of parking and a quiet and peaceful atmosphere. The Restaurant At El Refugio was due to open the following weekend, but we ate well at the little hotel restaurant down by the sea, maybe 70-80 yards away.
We completely de-stressed and would go back again tomorrow, access very easy with Brittany Ferries Portsmouth-Santander 24 Hr. crossing.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea-view and terrace, no extra charge but not all rooms have these facilities.

Lovely hotel near the beach. Very friendly staff. Abrahan was especially helpful. Good food served in the restaurant. The room was spotlessly clean with a balcony (sea view). Free parking available. Location good for visiting Comillas & Santillana. Other good beaches nearby. Would definitely stay there again.

This is a lovely, clean, friendly hotel right by a beach.

Pluses:
English is spoken.
The staff are all friendly and helpful.
The hotel food is excellent.
The whole hotel is immaculately clean.
There is a decent sized lounge with table football available.
Wifi is available in Reception (the signal drops off rather in the lounge area.)

Minuses:
Small rooms (We had a double. If we come back here, I'd ask for a family room for the two of us.)
Shared balconies.
Smokers outside on the terraces.

The hotel is run by a family group of mother, son and daughter. They put a huge amount of effort into the upkeep and running of the hotel and it shows. They made us feel very welcome.

Room Tip: Ask for a larger room than you think you will need!
