Hotel Zum Kaiserweg
Ranked #31 of 35 Hotels in Schladming
Reviewed 12 January 2013

We were a group of 4 staying over NY, and the Kaiserweg gets the thumbs-up from us. I have organised holidays in many Austrian resorts, and can't think of many hotels that offer such a great location at such a reasonable price.

It is a small, family-run hotel, so you need to be realistic about what to expect - the rooms and food are perfectly fine, but if you are expecting a choice of international dishes, a late-night bar, or evening entertainment, then this hotel is not for you.

The best feature of the hotel is the location, which is second to none, being only about 150m from the junction of lift-systems that enable you to access all of the different ski areas, and also home to a decent ski hire shop and lively umbrella-bar. If you choose to stay in Schladming centre, it would be a significant ski/walk/bus ride to get to this point, which is the only way to access the Hochwurzen or Reiteralm ski areas. Also we have experienced horrendous 45-min queues for the main gondola in Schladming, whereas queues at the local lift-stations are non-existent.

Just about the only 'down-side' to the hotel is that it tends to be a bit quiet, but for party animals, it is only a 10min walk into Schladming town, with numerous bars and clubs.

Good standard of rooms, decent size and clean. Food was certainly plentiful and very Austrian (ie a lot of grilled meat and potatoes, you might be wishing for some green veg by the end of the week!). The hotel was very quiet in the evening (hardly saw a soul after dinner) which I suspect was down to the lack of any lounge-type area when you might sit and read a book whilst having a drink. There was a small bar area adjacent to the dining room but didn't seem well used and no nice comfy chairs.

We booked independently via email direct with the hotel and found Raimund to be perfectly polite and efficient - his English is fine for day to day hotel business but maybe not at conversational level which could explain why some people have found him a little quiet.

However, the best aspect of this hotel (at least for skiers) is the location. Yes, its not in the centre of town but I'd say that's a good thing, as its only about 200m walk to a lift station where you can access both main mountains of the Schladming ski area - via a chairlift up to Rohrmoos (on the Hochwurzen mountain, where there are several ski schools on the nursery slopes adjacent to the top of the lift) and a gondola up to the mid-station on Planai mountain. The lift station also has a lift pass shop, ski hire shop and small apre-ski bar.

If you stay in the centre of Schladming, you can only get a gondola from there up onto Planai, so if you want to access Rohrmoos and Hochwurzen you have to get a bus. For me, when I go skiing its all about quick and easy access to the slopes, so the Hotel zum Kaiserweg's location is a big plus in that respect. Its also within walking distance of the train station, and town centre if you want to go there in the evening.

I'm writing this review having stayed here a couple of times and looking forward to staying again in February.
We have stayed at various other places in Schladming over the last 6 years- inc the Royer and this represents (in my opinion) better value for money & is excellent for the slopes.
This hotel is not flash, but it is clean, welcoming and has everything need for a week's skiing holiday.
I stay at a lot of "good" hotels and, although this place isn't anything to get excited about, it offers excellent value for money. If you want Boutique, or dressing up for dinner, this isn't the place for you. However, it's a nice, relaxing, clean place, with convenient access to slopes - it's perfect!

Room Tip: Enjoy! Anyone except party animals. Great for people with children doing Tritscher ski school

We hired ski's from the shop at the bottom of the lift station the shop stored the ski's along with our boots every night. No carrying ski's Lovely.
We found Raymond a very attentive and pleasant host. We were a group of 6 and spent many pleasant evenings in the small bar. occaisionally making the short walk [10 mins] to town with many shops bars and resturants.
The hotel was spotless. The rooms were spacious and the beds very comfortable. The bathrooms were on the dark side with dark tiles making putting on make up a tad difficult.

My wife and I booked this hotel for our ski holiday in the resort. Our four friends booked later and couldn't get rooms in this hotel so they booked in the Statdor in the centre of town where, for a little extra cash, I think they received better value for money.
Zum Kaiserweg is very clean and comfortable. My wife and I were not particularly looking forward to the food. But despite the fact that there was no choice of dishes on the menu we found the food to be wholesome and delicious. The owner's wife is the chef.
The hotel is about a 3 minute walk away to the Jet Hochwurzen gondola and about 15 minutes away from the Planai Gondola. You cannot ski down to the hotel. Also the worst part is that if you are skiing on the Planai side of the mountains then you have to take this Gondola down at the end of the day, and, disappointingly the last lift down is 4:30 pm. The alternative is to ski down to the Planai station and bus/walk back to the hotel. If you are skiing across to Hochwurzen and Reiteralm then access to this side of the mountain is gained by a chair at the Jet gondola. You can ski all the way down to the bottom of this chair.
The owner, Raimond, is a very pleasant man but speaks very little English consequently there is little interaction between him and the guests although I found this to apply to all nationalties and not just British.
The hotel has a bar but zero atmosphere in respect of Apres-ski. I never saw anyone use the bar. That said there is plenty of bars and restaurants in the centre of town.
The hotel has a desk top PC in one of it's tv rooms so you can use the internet free of charge (if you can get round the translation issues of using a well known browser in German)!
It also has a ski room with heated boot rack although there is insufficient room on it to take everyone's boots.
