Description: Hidden in a corner in Arcos de la Frontera can be found one of the most picturesque bars of the Andalusian region. It is the Bar-Hostel San Marcos, specialist in the cooking of the most exquisite dishes of this charming city, all of them based in local and traditional recipes. It is told that it was Paqui's grandmother, the owner, who cooked the last dragon that was mentioned by the first Castillian language poet in the province of Cádiz, native of Arcos: Don Diego Ximénez de Ayllón, who was born just a few steps away from the house where the current stablishment is located. Besides the restaurant services it also offers the hosting ones, having rooms where travellers can be accomodated. Rooms have TV, free WiFi, heating, air conditioning and private bathroom. It also have a private terraced roof with tables and chairs on the top of the building, from where can be seen amaizing views of the Guadalete river valley. The Cabildo's Square, parking place in the Old Town, is located a few metters away.

“Chorizo Al Infierno!”
Reviewed 22 June 2013

This is a typical Spanish bar with a lovely family running it!
We were there during the Tapas Trail (sadly about to end..), but my favourite was as mentioned - simply the best Chorizo I've ever had......also the Cod Fishcakes (tortillatas de Bacalao?) were delicious! The Tapas are only 2 Euros each - such great value!

“Reliable authentic local taverna”
Reviewed 18 May 2013

Been visiting this place for almost 10 years through many changes of menu, staff and owners. Reliable locally focused menu of classic Andalusian cuisine, served to a decent standard, accompanied by local wine and beer at reasonable cost.
Only had the house special tapas and wine this visit which was really good - vegetarian stew with poached egg and fried bread, with a glass of chilled local red wine - 3 euros total - outstanding value, well served, good food in a very traditional setting.
If in Arcos and looking for a decent authentic local meal at reasonable cost - give San Marcos a try - much better than other places close by.

“Superb food, good cheer”
Reviewed 10 December 2012

The barman and his wife were warm and welcoming and she cooked tapas for us that were fabulous. We had the usual olives and brown bread, also cold cooked carrots with turmeric, spinach croquettas, tortilla with cod and mushrooms, and a dish of chickpeas and spinach. We downed all of this with a taste of the light pinkish local wine. The owners also have a hostal upstairs, very inexpensive and in a good location. We also had our morning coffee at this cafe and it was hot and a good start to the day.

“much improved”
Reviewed 17 April 2012

Visited during Semana Santa and it was obvious this place has changed hands - a good thing! We enjoyed some great homecooked tapas, most noteable was toasted country bread topped with salmorejo, jamon and fried quails eggs - it was fab (best version I've eaten) and the house red wine produced down the roadwas great too. Very amiable hostess who offered to take us to the family bodega which produces the wine! Recommended.
