“Great stay, great food”
Reviewed 19 April 2014 via mobile

Stayed here to visit relatives in the area. The room was very spacious and clean. The bed was huge and very comfy. There was no heating on in the hotel but the room was really hot even with the window open. Breakfast was good value for money. But if you like your omelette soft and fluffy you may be disappointed. We had a bar meal on the first night and a meal in the restaurant on the second, both were tasty with very good size portions. The price of the meals was slightly above the norm for pub food but this was reflected in the size and quality. The staff were friendly and helpful and we're genuinely interested in how your day had been. The disabled parking bays could do to be more clearly defined as they were always taken up by cars not displaying a badge, not helpful when trying to get my husband in and out of the car into his wheelchair. There are steps inside up to the reception desk and ground floor rooms but there is a stair lift. Would definitely stay / eat here again.

Even our dog was glad to come back here at the end of the day! Lovely big room, clean and wonderfully comfy bed. Lovely hot shower, our room opened out onto the garden to exercise our dog, arranged deliberately by hotel as no other rooms had doors. The staff were lovely, very helpful. Two meals for £9.99, and its good food. Lovely breakfasts. It needs a bit of a refurb of the outside (happening soon we were told. But not sure if thats inside or outside) free wifi. Location is just off of the motorway and on a roundabout but not noisy at all. Fab stay, would recommend it! We got a deal of £67 for two people for two nights with breakfast included.
Had read the negative reviews and none of this applied for us.

Room Tip: If you have a dog ask for the garden access room....we didnt but they gave us it anyway!

We booked this hotel on an online booking site as the picture showed a clean comfortable traditional pub. What we hadn't bargained for was it being situated on a very busy A road roundabout junction! The interior of this hotel is shabby to say the least and in dire need of a makeover.
The room was large but stiflingly hot all night. The bed was large and very comfortable as were the pillows and the bed linen clean and fresh. I would say the room also needed a lick of paint -and why do hotel cleaners never seem to clean skirting boards or wipe drink splashes from walls!
The bathroom was dated but basically clean. The shower head needed replacing as loose and water sprayed all over the floor. There was black damp in various places and evidence of shoddy repairs using mastick.
We had our evening meal in the restaurant which was dark and gloomy, although busy. The tables were shabby and worn -although it seemed the shabbiness worsened the further into the restaurant you went as the front room seemed quite pleasant whilst the back room was the shabbiest of them all and the tables should have been put in the skip years ago! The prawn cocktail we ordered was a rip off at £5.00 - 5/6 prawns, minimal lettuce and the worst, cheapest white bread imaginable. The steak was nice and well cooked though with minimal trimmings so not the best value. The service was also minimal and no-one asked if our meals were ok -basic service.
After a comfortable and quiet -if very hot nights sleep we went down for breakfast. We were pleased to see breakfast being served until 12.00 at weekends so went down at about 11.00 to be sat in the dreaded charmless back room -chipped table and all whilst the staff had full volume conversations between themselves whilst cleaning and vacuuming around us! We had to call for service and were attended reluctantly to by a young man with minimal charm skills. The breakfast was adequate but ok - tea late, toast late. We ate up and left the staff discussing their weekend arrangements - not even a nod in our direction.
We paid £70 for the room and breakfast which on viewing the hotel online didn't seem a bad price but having now read previous reviews i see someone else paid £40 - we were robbed! Next time i'll do my homework!

When ordering we were advised that there were quit a few items not available as they were refurbishing. The starter came out and we were advised that there would be a delay for the main course. After finishing the main course it took an hour for the plates to be taken away, we were not asked how the food was or if we wanted a desert. At closing time the bill was put on our table. We advised the staff of our issues and they blamed the waitress that had already gone home. Shocking service.

Stayed for a two-night break with friends as this was a good mid-way point between our respective homes (Northumberland and Berkshire) for us to meet for a short break.
From our arrival to departure, it would be hard to find an hotel which combines the virtues of good value, helpful staff, good food and comfortable rooms.
The hotel, which is part of the Old English Inns chain is about to undergo a substantial refurbishment. It is true that there were one or two minor things like no loo roll holder in our bathroom and patio-style doors in our room that we could not open, but these in no way detracted from an excellent experience for all of us and I am certain that correction to these small items will form part of the upgrades.
Would we stay here again? Yes, definitely and we await the completion of the refurbishment with interest.

My wife an I had our golden wedding celebrations in the function room at the red lion on the 23/03/2014.From the first contact we were treated with kindness and respect. On the day we were met by Marie the events organiser who could not have been kinder to her own parents. The buffet was beautifully fresh and hot,we had more than enough for the 40 guests that came.the manager kept in touch with us constantly to make sure we were ok.we would not hesitate in recommending this hotel for anyone having any sort of celebration .

We stopped here for one night on our way up to Scotland. £45 for a double room plus a breakfast?? We thought it sounded too good to be true. I'm pleased to say it wasn't. The parking was plentiful, the staff were polite and welcoming. The room itself had a huge bed that was really comfortable. It's no frills but there was a TV and the bathroom was clean and the shower powerful.
Our own gripe, and it was my wife's and not mine, was her breakfast I the morning was a bit greasy. She had an omelette and it was swimming a bit. We did tell the staff and they were apologetic. My breakfast was hearty and was cooked how I liked it and they allowed me to change items I didn't want. The buffet was also good.
