On a hunt for our ancestors who iived and worked in the early 1800's at the former manor now known as Hotel Skivehus in the town of Skive in northern Jutland, we booked a table for four at the restaurant Annexet which is a building dating back to 1719 and situated next to the hotel.
The menu allows you to pick the vegetables and sauces that you wish to accompany your choice of meat and fish. Three of us had scrumptious tender beef steaks from the island of Fur and one of us had ling, which is a smaller, tender fish in the cod family caught off the west coast of Jutland. This was accompanied by side dishes of fresh whole asparagus, baby carrots and spring onions perfectly cooked al dente. Together with the new small potatoes and homemade bearnaise sauce, we had a delightful meal topped off with an excellent wine, which was the only non-local element of the meal.
The service was good and the atmosphere cosy and welcoming in part due to the historic interior of this half-timbered building.
Although the surrounding area is not up to par - there is a McDonalds right next to Annexet - and the town of Skive is lacking in urban planning, there are many sights in the outlying areas: the massive, carved Jelling runic stones (Denmark's "birth certificate"), the island of Fur with its moler layers full of fossils, Thise dairy with the world's best dairy products - and they are organic as well, and the burial mound of the bronze age Egted girl just to mention a few.
