We were not told in the reception that there is no air conditioner in the room. However, we decided to stay because the view from the terrace was amazing. It was the wrong decision! It was a night that we will never forget … we didn’t get any sleep. It was hot, and much worse, stuffy with a moldy smell (The carpet was wet and the walls and scieling had big old stains of dried water). The mattress moved freely and made a terrible noise.
In total the room needs a total renovation, and i would not have given it even a 1 star rating. not worth the mony (95 Euro).

We often used to stay in Stresa on Lake Maggiore, however one day we moved on 7 kilometres up the road to a little village named Belgirate and discovered The Hotel Milano. A realy pleasent and friendly hotel that can be Room only, B&B, Half or Full Board or whatever you want on a daily basis.
The rooms are large as are the bathrooms and a lot of the rooms have a superb view over the lake at sunrise or sunset. Food is of the highest quality and very typically Italian, I guess this is because they have some serious competition from a couple or so restaurants just across the road. It is easy to get to and from Stresa by local bus or boat (not that frequent) from the Belgirate boat station which is just along from The Milano . Once in Stresa you can basically get to any town on the lake by boat and it is not expensive. A bit hussle bussle from the main boat terminus but that lends itself to the great atmosphere that exists. When there, we always go to a town called Palanza for lunch, it is a bit of a routine trip for us and there are many superb restaurants and some great walks. Another good day out is a trip on the cable car that goes up Monte Mottarone with a mid stop on the way, excellent scener pack walks and good eating places there however you feel that perhaps the prices have been a bit inflated because of the spectacular views. You can of course always put your knees to the test by walking down the mountain (I have never done this nor do I plan to) The thing about this part of the world is that it is so ITALY and getting back to a typical Italian Hotel in the evening and really being able to relax adds something special to the whole vacation. A point to remember is that if you are really tired when you get back to Stresa from wherever you have decided to travel and dont want to wait around for the next boat or bus back to Belgirate just call the hotel and they will send a taxi to collect you.
Footnote: As a guest at Hotel Milano you can swim in its sister Hotel Carlotta's pool which is set in very picturesque surroundings.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the first floor, size and superb views.

After arriving on the 8th July we were shown our room. The room looked out over the lake, it was amazing! Unfortunately there was no zircon and it was 38 degrees!

We were then told that for 10 euros we could upgrade to a room with aircon, which we did.

We were shown a room with am even better view, from and center over the lake, an unforgettable view. Sadly though, the room only had a noisy portable aircon unit, but so as not to ruin my partners dream trip, I switched it on, and left the room forman evening meal.

Upon returning to the room, we found it as hot as it was before we left. I tried to put up with it, but once I tried the bed, that was it! It was like sleeping on a boat! I can easily the most uncomfortable bed I have ever tried!

To cut a long and sad story short, at 3 am we got up, left the hotel, and drove to Florence, which was our next destination,

We stopped in the Hotel Milano for 5 nights at the end of a 3 week honeymoon driving tour of Europe. It turned out to be the perfect way to wind down after the stress of 3 days in Rome and 3000 miles on the road.
Stopping at the hotel is like stepping back in time 50 years, not only for the decor but also for the excellent service of the staff. Where can you go these days for 100 euro's a night or so and be served by waiters impeccably dressed in white tuxedo's. Professional waiters who serve in Italy during the summer and Switzerland during the winter seasons. No disgruntled adolescents or loud vacation students attending to your needs here.
The site of the hotel is almost perfect. The view east from the hotel if you are lucky enough to get an east facing room is exceptional. We enjoyed views over the dining terrace looking east over a lake with around 30 swans, some lovely yachts and best of all, the sun rising over the hills to the east of the lake reflecting off the calm water every morning.
Stressa itself provided everything we wanted, good shopping, plenty of choice of restaurants and bars including a central square with everything from a cheap pizzeria to a shop to buy your Gucci sunglasses.
We highly recommend a boat trip touring the islands within the lake and the fantastic gardens.
Don't expect to have much to entertain teenagers looking to cause havoc, its main selling points are its picturesque views, tranquility and lack of moaning fellow brits.
This is the lake that the Italians go on holiday to and for good reason.....
Keep to the south / west side of the lake, the northern end towards the Swiss border is a bit industrialised and less picturesque.
If you want to chill out, see some beautiful scenery and meet some of the friendliest people you can hope to meet, this is the area for you and if you want a step back in time to the service and style of the 50's/ 60's, this is the hotel for you.
If you are looking for up to the minute technology, modern architecture, Art Deco furniture, fake tans and perfect teeth giving you false smiles and ripping you off then you're probably better off looking at a more modern hotel e.g. the Carlotti just down the road.
Only downsides to the hotel for us were the lack of a pool (Although there is a small sunbathing area and access into the lake itself just next to the dining terrace) and the occasional noise evident from the road which passes immediately next to the hotel.

Room Tip: Always go for an east facing room to get the beautiful views over the lake. Get up early to see the...

The hotel and rooms are old style. One can see the carpet on the room really used and the bathroom kind of from the 60ths. The people were nice. Our room was on the side of the road so it was a little noisy.

No where does it say it is a 4* on the hotel, so God knows where this rating came from. Rooms are out of the 50s - grouting in bathroom was disgraceful - black mold - no shower curtain and one careful shower totally flooded the bathroom floor as the water at the back of the bath ran round the surround and poured off the other side onto the floor. The only good thing about this hotel was the view - but even that is better a couple of miles up the road in Stresa. They were even unfriendly and unhelpful when we asked the elderly lady behind the reception if she knew of a local pizzeria, she simply said no and turned away. Beds were awful too - mattresses bigger than bed divan and felt like they would easily tip off. We were only there one night and would not have stayed longer but it was already paid via last minute.com and therefore we bit the bullet. At Euros 105 for the night via a cheap last minute booking it was a disgrace, we had a 5 star in Genoa for Euros 110!!

Belgirate is a small village on the shores of Lago Maggiore and about 5 km south of Stresa. You get there by train from Milano (the hotel is abougt 10 minutes walk from the train station) or you can drive via the autostrade. The town itself is very beaitiful, but small and not a lot of action for those looking for night life, an abundance of restaurants etc.. There are train services to Stresa and beyond and the ferry calls in a couple of times a day if you wish to tour the lake's attractions (a must). If you are looking for a quiet, relaxing break/holiday, then Belgirate will suit you.The hotel is showing its age but none the less, it is quite comfortable and the staff are friendly and helpful. We booked a room overlooking the lake and the views are superb. The tarrif included breakfast and dinner. Don't expect Michelin quality dining. The evening meals were quite good, but with a limited menu. The breakfasts were very average. Meals are served on an outdoor terrace overlooking the lake, which improves the dining experience no end. If you don't want to eat at the hotel, there are a couple of reasonable restaurants in the village. Overall we very much enjoyed our stay at Belgirate and the Hotel was acceptable.Three stars is a reasonable rating for this hotel.
