“Very warm family hotel with dinner buffet and cozy rooms”
Reviewed 16 August 2013

I like it very much. People are very friendly and dinner buffet is very reasonable priced, although the price for us is 295 instead of 220. Very quiet and beautiful place and very nice hiking rout. The rooms are simple but very cozy.

We broke our journey here on route from Bergen to Oslo so that we could enjoy the Flam railway. At the time of booking we were unaware that this hotel was not near the MYRDAL station but one stop down the Flam railway line at VATNAHALSEN (6 mins down the line or 1.5km if you fancy a hike). We would not recommend the walk with luggage (which we learnt the hard way), however the path is worth exploring as there are fantastic views of waterfalls and dramatic scenery. That said the staff in the hotel were extremely friendly, dinner offered a choice, buffet style, and breakfast was adequate. Rooms are dated but serve their purpose but the viewing lounge was a great place to sit and take in the views. The first train in the morning will get you back to Myrdal station in time to catch the mainline train.

You really are up in the mountains here and the hotel is the only thing around for miles. It was nice and quirky and the family room was great with an adjoining master bedroom. The dinner was fab for us but is buffet style so our fussy children lucked out, however the staff were happy to make them something different. Breakfast was good too. This hotel is not in Myrdal as the Norway in a Nutshell tour makes you first think but one stop before on the Flam railway. Great staff!

It's a bit of a shock arriving after Oslo.. It's a slightly run down Butlins style place with school canteen food set 800m up and cold in July. Well, what did you expect, really it's a posh walkers hostel! When we adjusted to that we really enjoyed our stay with wonderful walks up the rallarvegan track to stunning waterfalls. Staff are friendly and informative.

We stayed 5 nights on this hotel and we wish we could stay longer. The staff is by far the best that I have ever seen. They are absolutely nice and helpful.
The hotel offer very nice accommodation: simple and great. The breakfast is really good. They also offer a very good dinner for a fairly decent price. Even though is very easy to get on this hotel with the flåmsbana (just 50m from the station) this hotel is located in wonderful middle of nowhere! The view is just incredible! This is the best place for those that loves hiking, mountain biking or just want to stay in a silent wonderful place!

I was a little dismayed by other reviews that stated that the decor was dated--I guess I'm dated, too, because I thought it was charming. I'll include photos so you can decide for yourself. We wanted to break up the trip so we didn't get into Oslo at 2245, and wanted have one day less of steep Oslo hotel rates. What we got was a lovely stay, spectacular views, and nice hiking trails. Although we booked a shared bath, we were upgraded to a private one. It was clean, and maybe the room decor was a little plain, but it was outweighed by the million-dollar views. There was no tv in our room, although there was one available in the lounge. My only regret is that I didn't find more time to spend in the gift shop--the prices and selection were really good. The optional dinner cost 280 NOK, which included delicious cauliflower soup, pork, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and sauerkraut, lots of potatoes, tea or coffee, and chocolate mousse for dessert.

The hotel was a welcome respite from anywhere crowded in Norway. It felt like we had the place to ourselves in June. (Except for the cruise ship tours that stop by for tea. Fortunately they don't stay long. I'm sure that's how the hotel owners are primarily making a living, because we were there two nights and there were only one or two other rooms occupied!) There are hikes from the hotel that are spectacular. The place is a little tired and kitschy, but in a quaint sort of way. The first dinner was outstanding, the next one was just okay. But Norwegian food is not the best cuisine in the world! Janet is an excellent hostess, who was very helpful and accommodating to us. The entire staff was extremely nice. This was a great place to spend a couple of days in rainy, mountainous Norway. Tea/coffee in the parlor, lap blankets for the chilly front porch, and a lovely viewing room to watch the trains go by all made for a homey atmosphere.
