“Amazing views”
Reviewed 30 April 2014

We went in April as port of call on a cruise ship. We were the only ship in Flam and it was easy to get tickets for those that had not pre booked an excursion with the cruise company. However, in high season there are many more cruise ships and I can imagine it would be more difficult to get tickets. We joined the train in Myrdal after taking the train from Voss up to Myrdal. We found the Voss to Myrdal train journey offering more stunning views than the more famous flamsbana/flam railway (Flam to Myrdal) section. The Voss to Myrdal journey travels up and through the mountains all the way to the highest station, Myrdal. At the end of April these mountains were still covered in snow as well as the thaw starting so many waterfalls and rivers were also to be seen - the views were stunning. If travelling from Voss to Myrdal sit on the right hand side as this is where all the views are. If travelling from Myrdal to Flam both sides have good views but left hand side may have had an edge over the right.

“Fantastic experience!”
Reviewed 25 April 2014

I visited Flam whilst on a cruise to the Fjords. This was my second visit and again I wasn't disappointed. It is the most amazing 45 minute journey of breath taking scenery. Waterfalls cascade down the snow capped mountains as you climb to Myrdal. The train stops, so that you may get out to take photos, for a good 5 minutes, to view the spectacular Kjosfossen waterfall. On reaching Myrdal, we got out, threw a few snowballs and then it was back on for the return journey. We swapped seats/sides of the train for different views coming down.
The train itself is very comfortable, spacious and there's even a loo on board!!

My tip for this review - If you are cruising then buy your own tickets at the station. We were fortunate, there were 10 of us. I e mailed Flam Station a few weeks before our holiday and was able to book a group ticket. Discounts apply for parties of 10+ We paid 3000 Kr which worked out at £30 each!!! Considering our cruise line wanted £69 for the trip (that included a coffee and waffle), we thought that was a bargain!! They had even put a label on the carriage door where we were to be seated :)
Great experience, beautiful place and a must see!

“A must”

Quite a nice rail trip - the lower section being more impressive than the higher one. However, it does not hold a candle to a Sognefjord trip - but then again, what does?

“Didn't want to be but we were disappointed.”
Reviewed 23 April 2014 via mobile

Flam is a very beautiful place although the fact that we visited off season definitely helped! It was quite busy but had a pleasant atmosphere without being over crowded. We travelled from Gaupne approx 2 hour drive and our plan was to take the railway to the top and hike from the middle station back down. We arrived and bought our tickets a staggering £95 (GBP) (2adults & 2 children) we told the girl at the desk our plans and all was well. We got on the train and the views were stunning, we made a few stops along the way and arrived at the top. We waited for about 50 minutes for the return journey. We had packed a picnic as it was Easter Sunday and knew it would be unlikely for the cafe to be open. Itwas indeed closed. We started our return journey and the train made no stops! Now perhaps this was our fault maybe we were supposed to ask but in our defence the girl in the ticket office had said nothing. I was disappointed however I think my 10 and 8 year were somewhat relieved that the 10k hike was cancelled! We returned to Flam, had a walk round the museum (free entry) and grabbed a quick latte and ice cream in one of the cafés.
In short -
Is it beautiful? yes
Is it worth the money? My opinion is not really I'm afraid other drives, walks and excursions provide similar or better. If you are really into your trains and railways then yes this is a trip for you. If like us you felt you'd missing out if you didn't do it I'd think again as there are other ways to spent your money and you won't end up disappointed like we were.

“spectacular train journey”
Reviewed 21 April 2014

Flam Railway was a part of our "Sognefjord in a nutshell" trip. We began our trip with the train journey from Bergen to Myrdal. Already during this 1st part we have got nice views over landscape & we were almost alone in the train.
We changed in Myrdal to the 2nd train (official Flam railway - from Myrdal to Flåm) which was full. During the 1 hour journey we have got amazing views over multiple waterfalls, mountains,... We had also about 5 minutes time to make pictures by the Kjosfossen Waterfall (the train has a stop there). Unforgettable experience.
