“the little train that made our day”

my wife and I travelled from oslo with our 5yr old daughter. we travelled 6 hours by train to get to myrdal and then travelled to flam on the flamsbana train to flam. we were only in norway for the week and we were returning to oslo the same day. we only had 4 hours to spend in flam before our return train left. after a meal and an uphill walk to get some picures of the breathtaking scenery we realised we were too tired to make it to any other attractions by foot or bike. all the boat and bus tours did not suit our timetable. then we discovered the little train. we had actually passed it twice before but it was so unassuming and childish looking that we took no real interest.
the little train takes you close to the river, flam railway line, the waterfall, the fjord, the old church and through the beautiful village in just 45 mins. we got to see a lot more sights than we ever expected. and we were able to get loads of fantastic pictures. our little girl love it too.
the little train made our day as we we pressed for time and we were already worn out from travelling and sightseening that day and previous days.
if you have limited time or have kids or are not the athletic type then let the little train take you around flams beautiful sights. there is even information on the sights broadcast through the trains speaker systems. It only takes 45mins and you could even do this first to get an idea of where everything is located. it was only 250nok for the 3 of us.
thanks again little train. you made our day!!

If you are a countryside lover, but don't quite have the umpffff to walk, try the little orange train ("Rallartoget") at Flam. I loved it!

For $20 American, or similar in other denominations (but you must have exact change), you can take a 45 min. ride through the countryside. (This route could also be walked, if you prefer.)

The ride travels close to the river, heading southwest, past the Flam School, a church, farms, and houses, turns around and returns the same way; goes back to the east, along the shoreline for a short ways and returns. There is a narration, but everyone was excitedly conversing, so it was hard to hear all of it.

The train has a clear plastic cover that you can zip up over the windows, should it begin raining in. The seats are not bad for a small train. I had a little trouble getting in and out, but they were there to help. If you are right-handed, it's easier if you sit on the left to take photos.

The train leaves right from the harbor, across from the Sweater Shop. There is a large sign, sitting on the ground that tells you everything you need to know.

When you first see the Rallartoget by the dock in Flam, it looks kind of like a kiddie ride, with an unprepossessing ticket stand next to the road train. We actually bought tickets only because we wanted to do something interesting but not too strenuous after a day of hiking. In relative comfort, we got to see the Flam valley up to the original village center and church, passing farms and Brekkefossen. The 8 Km, non-stop roundtrip is about 45 minutes and is well narrated. We not only got to see sights without further physical strain for that day, but we got tempted to walk part of the route the next day to get a second look. It's a reasonably-priced and fun way to see Flam. Food and restrooms are nearby.
