My daughter and I went to Monte Gordo - mainly for some sunshine and cycling. We got both.
The hotel was spotless - a must for me. We had a broken drawer on arrival - not a problem, this got whisked away and was fixed and back in place by the time we came back to our room. The staff took a few days to warm up (maybe they thought we were complainers!), but were very helpful after a few days. We even borrowed an board & iron - it was not trouble for the chap to bring up.

Menu was "set" in the evening, a bit unusual for our tastes but several choices and ample for our needs (stopped you overeating!) - lovely surroundings.

We hired bikes and cycled to and from Villa Real every day - except the trip days. Nothing much in Monte Gordo, but perfect if you're looking to get a quiet spot on the beach - plenty to be had. Supermarket prices were pretty similar to the larger Pingu Doce in Villa Real.

A quick ferry crossing to Spain from Villa Real - cheap and cheerful. But watch your timing! don't go on a Monday - the wee zoo is closed! and things shut in the afternoon - there IS an hour difference between Spain and Portugal.

All in all a nice mother/daughter break.

We first visited Monte Gordo and the Casablanca 2 1/2 years ago so were interested to see what had changed. The Casablanca's public areas have been given a makeover - the dining room ihas been opened up and is self service for breakfast now (we didn't eat at hotel so don't know about evening meals). There are also more sun loungers and a roof terrace. Our room had not been refurbished - still low wattage lightbulbs and no flat screen TV - the list of available TV channels was out of date. The fridge was useful and the room itself was clean and served its purpose. We had a small outdoor area though one morning found one of the many feral cats in the area asleep on a chair and later that day noticed bloody pawprints on the table which attracted other cats. However the hotel is very tidy and rooms are cleaned daily. There is not much to do in the hotel - most people seemed to resort to using their laptops for entertainment. The main lounge area is also lit by low wattage bulbs so no good if you want to read a magazine or play cards. The hotel's two cats sleep in this area so if you don't like cats or have allergies this place is not for you. The clientele was a mix - not just pensioners but some younger people, There is a big indoor athletic training stadium in Vila Real and Monte Gordo is a base for many of the athletes and some appearerd to be staying at the Casablanca. Monte Gordo had not changed much - still lots of excellent value cafes and restaurants. O Tapas and Rest Stop 3 are excellent. Not much to do in the evening though. We used the train a couple of times - very good value - and there is also a bus service to all the towns along the coast to Faro. There are a couple of agencies in the town which organise trips to local places of interest and are cheaper than those touted by reps. You can also get a bus from Vila Real to Huelva and Seville and up to Castro Marim which is well worth visitng if only for the views from the Castle. Would we go back for a third time - probably not though it is a great place for a low key relaxing holiday and if we see a good deal, well who knows?!?

Room Tip: the ground floor side rooms have a large outside area.

Just back from this hotel could not fault it always something on menu you could eat.The hotel was spotless and staff friendly nothing too much bother, rooms cleaned every day and indoor heated pool a bonus. The hotel is central for everything but Montegordo is a small place not much nightlife. As te weather was not good we did lots of walking next town was Villa Real nice place about 45 min walk. You can get ferry from here over to Spain place called Ayemonte a nice day out. We also walked to Castro Marim you can get a bus it is a long walk about 1 hour 30 mins each way, a nice place and nice restaurant with spectacular view at top of hill. The local bars we used in Montegordo was Mobys a nice friendly bar run by Carl and his wife Toni. We had a good laugh in here. In centre there is a Portugese bar called Hamburger Bar a beer and a brandy 2 euro. We also ate in a tapa place at lunchtime called Casa Espanola it is in a side street off the square and food was beautiful.Other places we ate at lunchtime were Topx just round corner from hotel nice and friendly and food good. On the front the Taj Mahal do a lunchtime special portion of curry and rice with nan bread only 5.50 euros.Montegordo is a nice place but just a but quiet for us .

I have just come back from the Casablanca Inn hotel. The hotel itself you cannot fault for cleanliness, maids clean the rooms everyday and the towels are changed every day. Staff friendly, except the dining room waitresses can be a bit miserable. Talking about the dining, food is okay, but not much of a choice. The breakfast is buffet style, and the eveing dinner is waiter service. There are a couple of cats running all over the place , but being fair never saw them in the dining area. The hotel is very dark especially in the bar, and there are a lot of older people that tend to go there. The hotel has entertainment on tuesday and thursdays - man on an organ. Area good location, town about 5mins walk from hotel. Not much going on in the area so i would say not for the under 30s. Beach 5mins walk. Next town is Villa Real San Antonio 5euros by taxi or by cycle about 25mins. Walking about 50mins. .

Room Tip: All rooms bsically the same i was in room 118 and the terrace overlooked the front of the hotel and...

the casablanca hotel was very good, clean rooms which were nice.food good plenty of choice for main evening meal.very friendly & helpful staff.the only problem we had was the paths & roads are cobblestoned which is not very good if you cannot walk.it was very quiet nothing much to do so it was relaxing.not many shops.you can get a taxi to vila real for 5euros & then get the ferry for 1-70euros to spain ayamonte which was very nice.plenty of cafe bars.

Room Tip: the rooms on the front can be noisy has it is over the seating outside for smoking & drinking

Don't go to this hotel.......stayed 12-19 April 2012
It's full of pensioners (I'm 63!) the rest were much older!
Drab, dark, dated, no acceptable entertainment, cats wandering all over the hotel.
Very poor menu, overworked staff, reps are not in residence, we should have known then!
It's definitely not 4*, it's barely a 3*....DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME

just returned from casablanca inn on a half board basis, the hotel is spotlessly clean the staff friendly and helpful. the meals are what you would expect from a three star, the breakfast was a buffet, predictably frankfurters, bacon and such, the evening meals can be a little unusual but with a choice of two starters three main courses, usually two meat dishes and one fish dish, and a choice of fruit ice cream or a sweet the price was very good value, but if you prefer bed and breakfast there are many restaurants nearby, this is one hotel i will definitely return to

Room Tip: the rooms in the back are the most spacious
