“A short break”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 April 2012

First time to this hotel and this part of Portugal. We were there with friends on a short cycling break. The hotel was ideal for this purpose. It is a very clean hotel with good rooms, helpful friendly staff - nothing was too much bother. It is a very relaxing well designed environment and not too big. We were only B/B and the buffet breakfast certainly had a wide range of foods available. Very good location too - near the beach (a very short walk away). Excellent position for walking, cycling or getting the local train to other towns (and the trains are very cheap and a great way to see around). We had hired our bikes from a hire shop just a short walk away but the day we left the hotel had just received a new batch of bikes which looked very good and seemed to be reasonably priced for hire. This seems to be a popular hotel and we could understand why! We would definitely stay here again as the area is lovely and the beach could not be better - lots of very good and cheap places to eat out if you are only doing B/B. Only one grip is that it would have been great if the pool was a heated one. It was too cold to use mid-April - probably fine in summer - but as it was warm enough to use the sunbeds on some days it would have been great to have been able to use the pool!

Room Tip: Rooms 706 and 816 were very good rooms.

Just returned from my third visit to the hotel. The first was a "recci" visit for two weeks in Sept '10. Was so impressed that last year spent a month there. This visit was another month. The friendliness of the staff is always exceptional. As an overall experience it is excellent and I have not had any reason to make any adverse comments during any stay.
I look forward to returning to the hotel later this year and will certainly become part of the "family" of returning guests.

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights, 15th - 19th Jan 2012. We were very pleased with the whole experience. From the minute we arrived we were treated really well, the reception staff were excellent, and in spite of a mix up with our room (which was quickly and efficiently put right) it was a most enjoyable stay. We booked a Junior Suite, very nice, but the other rooms were equally as good. The hotel is spotlessly clean, in a nice spot just on the edge of town, quiet, but not far from bars and town centre etc.Buffet style meals were fine, good choice at both breakfast and dinner. Some entertainment on a couple of evenings, which we did not expect in January, The only critism was the service in the bar was sometimes a bit hit and miss as the barman did seem to be elsewhere on a number of occasions, but this is only a minor thing and did nothing to detract from what was a lovely few days break, I would recommend this hotel without question.

Room Tip: A Junior Suite is a good choice and a high floor on the front of the building gets sunshine all day.

Hotel Alcazar couldn't have been better... the staff was very helpful giving us driving directions to all of the 'best' places to see on the Algarve, providing us with welcoming port and nuts on our arrival, our room was spotless, and the buffet breakfast was varied and plentiful. There were always 3 choices of eggs as well as plenty of fresh fruits and wonderful Portuguese breads. At dinner which we enjoyed twice there were always 3 choices for your main meal and if you do not finish your bottle of wine they place your room number on it to drink up another time. We particularly enjoyed the Fado entertainment in the lounge - no cover charge and drinks were reasonable. The hotel was within easy, safe, well lit walking distances to all of the local restaurants of which there are many. One we liked was called Restaurant Monte Gordo and our 3 meals there were superb. If you go during the off season you do not need to pay for parking as there are lots of spots outside of the hotel's enclosure. Many of this hotel's guests come for extended vacations ranging from one month to six and are offered incredible 'deals' and it seems like a most friendly place.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the front of the hotel and not the side as then you have full afternoon sun to enj...

What a great hotel! We'd booked online and requested a double and were really happy to hear we'd been upgraded to a junior suite - try to go for one of these if you can - as the other rooms were twins. We were on B+B basis so can't review the evening meal, but the breakfast was always plentiful with lots of variety. Cleanliness wasn't an issue - everywhere was spotless. The staff were very helpful and polite and the option of the pool (very chilly, even in the hot sun), sun loungers, under tree hammocks, large swing beds, tennis court and children's play area, should suite the most unadventurous of holiday makers. The town of Monte Gordo is full of very passable eateries (don't dismiss the tourist menues for about 10 Euros - great value) with several small supermarkets which were really cheap. The beach is long, wide, sandy and very clean. We walked the 3km to Vila Real and took the ferry ride (cheap and about 15 mins tops in duration) over the river and into Spain. Ayamonte is a very nice town and there is a definite difference between Spain & Portugal - a good way of comparing the two if you've been to neither before. All in all, a wonderful and relaxing week away. The only thing I'd say is that, at 46 and 52, we felt a little young! But perhaps that changes in the high season. Definitely worth a visit

Room Tip: Junior suite if you can afford (or upgrade) to it

Just returned from ten nights at the hotel this is our second year and the friends we went with it is there third year. The staff are very friendly and helpfull. The only thing that spoils the hotel are the sun beds round the pool they badly need replaceing, very worn and not comfortable if you have a bad back. We hope to return next year and hope the sun beds may have been replaced. Got to say about the T.V when we stayed it was always on the sports channel.

My partner and I have just returned from a week at the Hotel Alcazar. It is one of the best holiday hotels I have ever stayed in - we had a huge room with sea view and balcony, kept beautifully clean and with ample wardrobe space. The decor is quirky and very unusual, all the public areas were spotless, the staff were friendly, helpful and courteous. We were bed and breakfast as we like to eat somewhere different most nights - the breakfast was very enjoyable, good choice and well cooked and presented. If we return to Monte Gordo we will definitely stay here, excellent value for money. Worthy of a higher star rating.
