“All Good Alcazar”

after reading a review on this site that said this hotel was unsuitable for wheelchairs i thought while i was there i would check it out. there IS a lift to the dining room, a ramp for wheelchairs at the front and you CAN get to the swimming pool by taking the life to floor -1 and walking around the side and across the well kept lawn. nowhere in the hotel does it say however that they do cater for disabled access. on the sign outside which shows all of the facilities on offer the hotel does not cliam it caters for disabled/wheelchair bound people. however you can get to every room of the hotel with a wheelchair or push chair with ease. the staff where great, the breakfast was the same every day but hot and tasty and the rooms where cleaned and made every day with clean towels. I WILL BE RETURNING TO THE ALCAZAR.

Arrived at Monte Gordo and it was very overcast, the Alcazar was a very welcoming hotel, and the staff was very efficient, although our room was not ready (as we arrived before 12 noon ) and had requested a high floor with a sea view.
A wander down to the town for a "toastie" and our room was avalable within an hour.
The Hotel is very cosy and the room was large but could do with some more drawers for storage. and cleaning staff could be a bit more thorough in their work.
One of the main problems that we had was with the food, their was not sufficient choice and the menu seemed to cater for continental guests, and scrambled eggs and bacon for breakfast everyday gets a bit boring. the majority of guests appeared to be Dutch (but very friendy) as did Monte Gordo itself it was like being in Holland, the area was very flat and most of the cafe's and eating places catered for the Dutch.
Monte Gordo itself is very small, but it has miles of lovely sandy beach's, woodland walks and places to visit. I am sure that when the sun shines there is a lot to do, but when its rainy and the wind is blowing a gale the options are limited.
We managed to find enough to do for the 10 days that we stayed but must admit that was resting and reading most of the time.
Overall this was a place for when the sun shines and would not recomend it for a wintersun holiday. The Hotel appeared to be above average for the resort.
With regards to Airport transfers I would recommend www.farotransfers.com they were very efficient and price was at least £25 return cheaper than other operators.

My wife and I stayed at the Alcazar first two weeks in October. We opted for the 'Junior Suite' which really was a two bed apartment, with two bedrooms and a bathroom the main room having twin beds and the second room was a double room. The rooms were cleaned every day and towels and bedlinen changed every third day.
The breakfast was a buffet, with a good selection bread rolls, different types of bread, continental cooked meats and cheeses, fresh fruit and cereals, the hot selection was limited, either bacon & beans or scrambled egg & sausages on alternate days, plenty of tea/coffee or fruit juices. We did not try the evening meals as we were on B&B basis prefering to eat out in the evening trying many of the various resturants in the town.

The hotel has plenty of facilities, largish pool and seperate pool for toddlers, tennis courts, large sandy play area for children with plenty of equipment, inside there is a games room, pool table and electronic games and internet facility if required. In the main a very good three/four star hotel with pleasant helpful staff.

The hotel was quiet ,I estimated only about a third full and the town itself was also quiet, to be expected at this time of year I suppose. The town itself was clean with plenty of snack bars, resturants and small shops, some establishments closed for their holidays prior to the Christmas/ New Year festivities when the town becomes very lively.
The main feature of resort is the magnificent beach, miles of nice clean sand, you can walk for miles and no oil patches and virtually no litter.

  • Liked — Clean, Quiet, close to centre and beach
  • Disliked — Hotel car park charges.

Following our visit to the Hotel ALCAZAR in June/July this year, I came to the conclusion that our next planned visit here in December for Christmas and New Year was too far away and decided to spend a couple of weeks there in September - this time as a single traveller.
As before, the Hotel kindly arranged for my airport transfer (after phoning me at home to confirm my flight details) with Low Cost Transfer/Best Day (18 euros each way) and certainly worth it for the 25 minute direct journey.

I have observed over the years on my intrepid travels that many single travellers tend to be segregated, isolated and seen as an afterthought. This is not the case in Monte Gordo and certainly not at the Hotel Alcazar
From the moment of arrival, I was delighted to learn that the Management Team had taken the decision to upgrade me from a room for one to a suite, (adequate for four guests) at no extra cost!

I shall not go into great detail about the Alcazar's amenities, facilities and overall layout as I believe I covered this comprehensively in my review (dated 27 July 2008). Suffice to saythat as previously, I could not fault any aspect of the Hotel in it's entirety.
If anything, there have been further considerations to it's guests i.e. if you have an early departure back to the U.K., the Alcazar now provide a 'packed lunch' including sandwiches, fresh fruit and a drink - very welcome when you're killing time at Faro airport.

On completing my questionnaire before departing from the Alcazar, I have again suggested that a drinks vending machine for that all important early morning 'cuppa', bearing in mind the Hotel resaurant does not open for breakfast until 7.30 am and the rooms do not have drinks making facilities (something I personally approve of). It does however result in the drinks machines being attacked by a plague of locusts at 7.30 when the resaurant opens.
There are two other things conspicuous by their absence. Firstly, despite having a well stocked library, very few books are in English. This year alone we have taken and left approximately 20 books.PLEASE take some reading material with you even if you have little or no intention of reading it (Thank you in advance and anticipation).
Secondly, Despite the Hotel Alcazar having capacious wardrobes in it's rooms, there is a distinct shortage of coat hangers. Are guests taking them home as souvenirs instead of Hotel towels??
We always take three dozen between us (for the princely sum of £3). Most 'pound shops sell them at £1 per dozen. The hangers never return home.

As usual all the reception staff were friendly, helpful and attentive but a special mention goes to Sr. CARLOS NETO (receptionist) for going the extra yard.
As mentioned above, we shall be returning to the Hotel Alcazar for Christmas and New Yearand to celebrateour honeymoon.

Watch this space for my New Year review.
Happy holidays!

We stayed at the hotel Sept. It was still very hot. Hotel is very clean, great rooms, pool area large and no problem getting a lounger. Entertainment every night. Staff very friendly and helpful. The pool bar has a great menu. Very close to the beach, shops and plenty of places to eat. Highly recommended.

Just come back after a 7 night stay, hotel was very clean and comfortable. Breakfast served as a buffet, always plenty there and fresh, hot breakfast changed daily.
Room was cleaned every day and the towels changed every day.
Pool and pool area really clean, and all cleaned every night. All staff helpful and friendly.
We were not expecting to have such a nice comfortable hotel, after some of the previous reviews we were a bit worried but it was way above our expectations.
Loads to do, took a day trip to Spain by bus and ferry which cost approx £10 for the both of us.
The beach is absolutely wonderful, you can walk for miles.

Excellent hotel on the fringes of Monte Gordo. We stayed for 14 nights and found the bedrooms spacious (although a little more drawer space would have been appreciated), the air-con invaluable, and the public space facilities more than adequate.

The pool area was excellent, with plenty of loungers, and a good shady area if you don't want to sit in the full glare of the sun all day.
