We checked in on our first day only to be told that our room was not ready due to a fault with the plumbing. We were given a room in the 4* part of the hotel, free of charge for one night with the option to upgrade after that for 10 Euros per night. As we only booked the 2* accommodation we were more than happy to take this option.
What was very irritating was being told there were two types of all inclusive. One where you have soft drinks and beer, coffee and tea from 11am until 10pm. The other all inclusive was where you could have all of the above plus spirits and wines until 11pm. We had the "Standard" which was the first choice. We were again offered the chance to upgrade at a cost. This happened to every British family arriving at the Mare Nostrum.
We booked our holiday through Easy Jet and when contacted said we got what we paid for, "all inclusive light" This was never made clear to us and it was our fault according to them as we never queried what we were paying for. (Be warned, Easy Jet are masters at fobbing you off)
The "snacks" on offer were a plastic bowl of plain crisps. (other flavours were at an additional cost). We also found out after 5 days that we could have toasties (No menus or lists showing you what was available)
I do not blame the hotel for this disaster as they apparently tell the agents in the UK of the choices but they do not pass this info on to us.

Room Tip: Go 4* and ensure you book the All Inclusive which suits your needs

Having booked through a (very inept) travel agent, we thought we'd paid for a 4-star room, only to be told on arrival that this wasn't the case, consequently we ended up in the older part of the hotel, which was very basic. The first night was OK. On the second day we were told that they had 'a rule' that if there were rooms available in the newer (and considerably better) part of the hotel then we could upgrade if we wished, for an extra 10 euros per night. In my opinion, this is just a way to screw you out of more money - in addition to paying for the safe (plus a deposit for the key) and wanting a deposit for the tv remote. We were forced into upgrading by the arrival of a coachload of German students who spent their time running up and down the corridors, banging on room doors and generally making life hell. The upgraded room was fine, apart from air-condiioning that didn't work, and was not fixed until we'd complained for the third time. It then worked for about 2 hours before packing up again in the middle of the night, leaving us sleepless and sweaty. We complained again, and were offered another (smaller) room which we took - at least it had functional air-con, but it was on the bottom floor and we were kept awake half the night by people having shouted conversations on the street outside. So...... make sure you know which part of the hotel you're booked into, and if it's not the newer part, stay somewhere else!

Room Tip: Make sure it's the new part

Do not go to this hotel!!! You've been warned!! First of all this hotel is NOT a 3 Star hotel as we was told, it has 2 buildings to the hotel, a 4 star building and the bronx, which is a 2 star building, we got put in the 2 star part of the hotel. It was red hot, no air conditioning, no ceiling fan, not even a standing fan. We had to sleep with the all the doors and windows open at night and leave the windows and patio door open to the balcony all day which was not secure but it didn't matter anyway as the patio door lock didn't work. If you want to stay in the 4 star part of the hotel if there is room which there wasn't when we was there, you can pay to upgrade.

Secondly if you do ignore this warning and decide to risk it and go there, DO NOT STAY ALL INCLUSIVE!!!! We paid for all inclusive only to be told when we where checking in that they have 2 different types of All Inclusive one basic and the other All Inclusive Plus, we where apparently booked onto the Basic package, which means that you can only have beer as an alcoholic drink which I do not like and you have to stop drinking at 10pm, where as the all inclusive package you can drink, wine, sangria, cocktails, spirits and can drink until 11pm. Our documents said all inclusive and the travel agents did not tell us about the other package, after calling our travel agents whilst stood in the Reception unable to check in, they didn't know anything about it and spoke to the Receptionist at the hotel to be told that the Tour Operator should have told the travel agents, nobody wanted to take responsibility. The hotel was keen to offer us an upgrade at a cost to the All Inclusive Plus package which we had to pay for myself so I could have a drink, we was then told by the Owner of the hotel that not only one of us can upgrade we both have to, even though my Finacee was fine with just drinking beer, after a lengthy heated discussion he reluctantly agreed to let just me upgrade. After that the holiday was a joke, the Owner is rude and child like, breathing down everyone's neck, making sure they are not getting drinks for anyone which is on the basic package, you have to finish one drink before getting another and the Owner would come around and check your glass was empty before allowing you another drink. I was able to drink untill 11pm and my Fiancee had to stop at 10pm, after that you then have to pay for your drinks until the bar closes, even a soft drink. My Fiancee couldn't even go to the bar to get me a drink as he was only allowed to get beer. This seemed to only be happening to English people there where mostly Spanish and European in the hotel and they didn't seem to be affected. Finally the food was disgusting, only catering for Spanish, fish and paella, no drinks machine in the restaruant you have to catch the one girl to ask her for a drink. No staff on the bar you have to wait for whoever is on the Reception to finish on the phone, dealing with guests before coming over to serve you a drink, no snacks laid out during the day you have to ask for a toasted sandwich which came out black from the dirty machine, or some crisps which they give you in one small bowl to share.

The only good thing I can say about this hotel is that it is close to the centre of Tossa De Mar it is only about 5 minute walk from the beach, whcih is a shingle beach so we didn't go there much. Also the staff other than the Owner are brilliant, I feel sorry for them that they have to work there. Very pleasant and polite and helpful. Jordi who worked there is brilliant, he even came out with us one night to Lloret De Mar for a night out.

Tossa De Mar itself is a nice quiet place, although not for me I woúldn't go back there, just a little too quiet for me, there are no pubs or clubs or even one bar with a bit of music, only one restaruant after another along the sea front which is very pretty with the Castle in the background, lots of little streets and shops good for a couple 40plus I would say. Lloret De Mar is a 25 Euro taxi ride away one way so it's a bit too far to go often but we did go once and had a great night out.

Room Tip: Stay in the 4 star part of the hotel, and do not go all inclusive.

September 2011 : Stayed here for a week , all inclusive . Very quiet hotel about 200 metres from the beach in quiet resort of Tossa Del Mar . The main hotel building had been fully refurbished recently , however , our room was in the older part of the hotel . All fine with room , surroundings and location . As we stayed on an all inclusive basis at the end of the season , rarely was the hotel even part full , food pretty samey each day but always plenty of choice . Breakfast set us up for the day with usual selection of cereals , juices , strong coffee , cold meats and warmed eggs , bacon and sausages . Bar selection was limited to draught San Miguel , and wines/cocktails .
Staff pretty laid back and helpful , room was clean and tidy , and resort was quiet , pretty and subdued .

Room Tip: Rooms in refurbished area of hotel ( above reception block ) are better but may not be worth the sup...

I stayed for one week, never having been to Tossa before. It is a quiet resort. I would not go to Tossa again. It is OK but not my sort of place. The hotel has had a refurb in recent years but not the third floor where I was. No fridge in room, meant to be one. No aircon - it had broken down and only came on again the evening before I left. I went All Inclusive - ha ha! Drinks were thin on the ground, if you could get served at all! The manager told me off for bringing water in to have with my meal. I said it was bathroom water (which it was); I'm not paying 2 Euros for a bottle of his water! I do not drink alcohol so only wanted soft drinks anyway. There was only one or two English people staying there; seems to cater mainly for Italians, Spaniards, Russians, Germans, Lithuanians, Dutch. The cuisine bears this out as it was mainly geared to their palates: spagetti, pasta, frankfurters, paella, borsch, etc. No roast beef and Yorkshire puds! The smirking young barman, who had a huge boil on his cheek, found me amusing for some reason. I am a middle aged lady who behaves like one at all times, and who has travelled the world. A stag party from Skem (UK!) got told off by the manager for making a noise. Rubbish! I found it was Italians and two ladies from Lithuania who made noise for most of the time I was there, not the good-humoured Lancashire lads.

We stayed at the Mare Nostrum, August 2009 and was surprised at how welcoming, clean, comfortable and well located the Mare Nostrum is.

We just wanted and was expecting a basic hotel to sleep and leave our clothes and was not expecting anything too flash. We were pleasantly surprised to arrive and find it was so much more.

The Gentleman on the desk as we arrived was very helpful even though his understanding of English was basic and our Spanish was only basic. They do apprecciate if you do say just a few words in Spanish. After all you are in their country, I find it rude when people don't even make an effort when travelling abroad.

The food at Breakfast was excellent with a selection of juices, delicious coffee, a large choice of breakfast items, bread rolls, ham, salami, cheese's, croissant or danish, cereals, fresh fruit little muffins, toast and usually a choice of spanish sausage or bacon with sometimes either beans or eggs. It is not an english breakfast but then you are not in the UK.

The hotel is just a few minutes walk in any direction to a supermarket and approximately 10 mins leisurely walk into the beautiful and quaint town of Tossa. A large selection of restaurants to suit all budgets, for a fabulous romantic but slightly expensive then head into the fort towards the top of the hill. a cheap tapas bar can be found just below the statue of Ava on the left hand side. There is normally a wait. but for such a delightful alfresco meal it is worth the wait.
