What a warm welcome we had on our second visit to this hotel. Instead of a room that would have been suitable to store crisp salads we found that the air conditioning had been adjusted to ensure the minimum setting resulted in comfortable conditions and ensured more economical use of energy.
As usual the concierge service excelled. We could not open one of our cases and in next to no time a technician appeared who rescued the situation with discreet use of a screwdriver. The hem of a dress had got trapped in the lock!
To some package travellers the service at this five star hotel may appear daunting! We found it best to get to know the section waiter (the wearers of grey/navy overall type uniforms). There are some very wealthy clients around who are extremely generous with tips. If you are really happy with excellent service a gratuity to the section waiter seems to be spread amongst the team.
What a brilliant location – almost on the beach and next to a protected wild nature area. If you fancy it a walk alongside the park will bring you to a camel station where you can enjoy a long trek over the dunes at a modest price.
As naturists we find there is a superb beach with loungers and shades about 800 metres walking distance from the hotel. A little further on at kiosk 7 there is a sunlounger area more dedicated to the gay community.
We loved the comfort of the hotel naturist sauna area and unlike some visitors found the facility not entirely dedicated to the elderly! There are toilets, showers and changing cubicles around the spa pool and people who are not naturists or sauna users can easily use these alternative facilities. We certainly found a wide spread of age groups using these facilities and nobody need pass through naturists to use a loo, shower or changing cubicle. It is quite useful, especially on windy days or when seeking shade to have this naturist area, as it is at the moment, available throughout the day.
We mentioned on our hotel feedback that there were quite a number of missing tiles to the spa pool and management gave a prompt response that the pool is to be refurbished this summer.
Another matter we raised was the problem of birds being attracted to bread displays. The hotel are doing the best they can to solve this problem by keeping rolls in baskets and bread covered by cloths but the cheeky little sparrows ignore models of birds of prey are trying every trick in the book to find themselves a treat. We did not see any doves going for the bread and management point out these are a protected species.
Whilst there are fewer smokers than in previous years we find even in the open air tobacco fumes can spread a considerable distance and spoil the enjoyment of food. We have suggested like other Spanish hotels the seating around the serveries and buffet areas is dedicated to non-smokers thus controlling tobacco smoke around food areas.
We found signed non-smoking rooms (305-310) on the third floor to be overlooking the road next to the Oasis medical centre and the side of the Riu hotel. If you don’t book a seaview room and you enjoy watching from your balcony the sight of tow trucks collecting vehicles from disabled parking spaces this is the fun place to be! There is insufficient information in the room manual concerning the smoking policy of the hotel and sometimes information given by staff is contradictory.
Yes it is a good idea having dedicated non-smoking rooms and table areas but please ensure that non-smokers are not allocated inferior facilities.
The beds were the most comfortable of any we have slept on. It was interesting, in these days of allergy concerns, the hotel had chosen sumptuous goose down pillows. Curious to know more we looked inside the pillow cases and found various labels
“No mite” - suitable for persons suffering from house mite allergy.
“Downafresh” Hygiene according to DIN EN 12935
“Confidence in textiles tested for harmful substances”
“100% cotton (pillowcase) down proof, water and smudge repelling”
“Washable tumble dry well until completely dry”
If this fails to assure you then other pillows are available on request!
The breakfast buffet was an amazing selection of food and the ripe Gorgonzola cheese with Spanish tomatoes and fresh rolls made a splendid starter!! Of course you could have a full English breakfast freshly cooked if you prefer.
Evening barbecues did not skimp on quality or quantity! The selections of starter salads were outstanding. There was a superb choice of freshly cooked fish or of roasts and we became addicted to rosti potatoes!
The menus offered on non-barbecue days were fantastic. We remember delightful iced soups and the presentation was such we did not realise at times we had chosen raw meat or raw fish dishes!! An excellently designed menu that was different for each of the period of our fourteen day holiday.
Our holiday was a hotel and flight package from Thomson and for a first class hotel we were forced into steerage for the travel arrangements!
Although we had paid extra for seats with extra legroom on our outgoing flight we were seated with an aisle between us. The Thomson cabin crew informed us that such seats were regarded as “seated together”
Although we had extra legroom when we put the seat back there were complaints from the people behind. Most people we spoke to considered the seating too cramped. For this extra comfort we had sacrificed a view from a window. The meal was very poor consisting of overheated and mushy vegetables and a bit of sausage in congealed sauces.
Whilst on holiday we contacted Expedia to find out whether or not Thompson were the least wide and shortest pitch seats available on flights from the UK to Los Palmas. Their reply is awaited.
OK mistakes can be made by travel representatives but it was a shock to have a card from ours stating we were scheduled to leave a week earlier than anticipated. Although this was corrected we did not get a similar card correctly confirming transfer arrangement for our real departure date! We were certainly a little worried when our transfer taxi was ten minutes late.
The return flight was even worse! We arrived at the airport at the time arranged by Thomson only to find we had to wait in a Thomson queue for a Thomson check in desk for 50 minutes. Whilst uncomfortable and inconvenient it does not make commercial sense. We just did not have time after completing airport security for duty free shopping at the airport. Another example of the total inhumanity of the travel arrangements was the shuttle bus filled with passengers was parked in the sun next to the aircraft with doors closed and inadequate air conditioning. After ten minutes one of the passengers started hammering on the windows to the coach driver outside. “Open the doors- open the doors” he shouted.
We promised to mention the happy and smiling members of the Thomson flight crew seated opposite us for take-off and landing. They were so happy and enjoying their teamwork that we confessed the return meal, prepared in Gran Canaria, of sweet and sour chicken was an improvement on the one on the outgoing flight!
Hopefully we will be able to find better travel arrangements to enjoy this magnificent hotel.
