“First class hotel but steerage transport to get there!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 June 2011

What a warm welcome we had on our second visit to this hotel. Instead of a room that would have been suitable to store crisp salads we found that the air conditioning had been adjusted to ensure the minimum setting resulted in comfortable conditions and ensured more economical use of energy.

As usual the concierge service excelled. We could not open one of our cases and in next to no time a technician appeared who rescued the situation with discreet use of a screwdriver. The hem of a dress had got trapped in the lock!

To some package travellers the service at this five star hotel may appear daunting! We found it best to get to know the section waiter (the wearers of grey/navy overall type uniforms). There are some very wealthy clients around who are extremely generous with tips. If you are really happy with excellent service a gratuity to the section waiter seems to be spread amongst the team.

What a brilliant location – almost on the beach and next to a protected wild nature area. If you fancy it a walk alongside the park will bring you to a camel station where you can enjoy a long trek over the dunes at a modest price.

As naturists we find there is a superb beach with loungers and shades about 800 metres walking distance from the hotel. A little further on at kiosk 7 there is a sunlounger area more dedicated to the gay community.

We loved the comfort of the hotel naturist sauna area and unlike some visitors found the facility not entirely dedicated to the elderly! There are toilets, showers and changing cubicles around the spa pool and people who are not naturists or sauna users can easily use these alternative facilities. We certainly found a wide spread of age groups using these facilities and nobody need pass through naturists to use a loo, shower or changing cubicle. It is quite useful, especially on windy days or when seeking shade to have this naturist area, as it is at the moment, available throughout the day.

We mentioned on our hotel feedback that there were quite a number of missing tiles to the spa pool and management gave a prompt response that the pool is to be refurbished this summer.

Another matter we raised was the problem of birds being attracted to bread displays. The hotel are doing the best they can to solve this problem by keeping rolls in baskets and bread covered by cloths but the cheeky little sparrows ignore models of birds of prey are trying every trick in the book to find themselves a treat. We did not see any doves going for the bread and management point out these are a protected species.

Whilst there are fewer smokers than in previous years we find even in the open air tobacco fumes can spread a considerable distance and spoil the enjoyment of food. We have suggested like other Spanish hotels the seating around the serveries and buffet areas is dedicated to non-smokers thus controlling tobacco smoke around food areas.

We found signed non-smoking rooms (305-310) on the third floor to be overlooking the road next to the Oasis medical centre and the side of the Riu hotel. If you don’t book a seaview room and you enjoy watching from your balcony the sight of tow trucks collecting vehicles from disabled parking spaces this is the fun place to be! There is insufficient information in the room manual concerning the smoking policy of the hotel and sometimes information given by staff is contradictory.

Yes it is a good idea having dedicated non-smoking rooms and table areas but please ensure that non-smokers are not allocated inferior facilities.

The beds were the most comfortable of any we have slept on. It was interesting, in these days of allergy concerns, the hotel had chosen sumptuous goose down pillows. Curious to know more we looked inside the pillow cases and found various labels
“No mite” - suitable for persons suffering from house mite allergy.
“Downafresh” Hygiene according to DIN EN 12935
“Confidence in textiles tested for harmful substances”
“100% cotton (pillowcase) down proof, water and smudge repelling”
“Washable tumble dry well until completely dry”

If this fails to assure you then other pillows are available on request!

The breakfast buffet was an amazing selection of food and the ripe Gorgonzola cheese with Spanish tomatoes and fresh rolls made a splendid starter!! Of course you could have a full English breakfast freshly cooked if you prefer.

Evening barbecues did not skimp on quality or quantity! The selections of starter salads were outstanding. There was a superb choice of freshly cooked fish or of roasts and we became addicted to rosti potatoes!
The menus offered on non-barbecue days were fantastic. We remember delightful iced soups and the presentation was such we did not realise at times we had chosen raw meat or raw fish dishes!! An excellently designed menu that was different for each of the period of our fourteen day holiday.

Our holiday was a hotel and flight package from Thomson and for a first class hotel we were forced into steerage for the travel arrangements!

Although we had paid extra for seats with extra legroom on our outgoing flight we were seated with an aisle between us. The Thomson cabin crew informed us that such seats were regarded as “seated together”

Although we had extra legroom when we put the seat back there were complaints from the people behind. Most people we spoke to considered the seating too cramped. For this extra comfort we had sacrificed a view from a window. The meal was very poor consisting of overheated and mushy vegetables and a bit of sausage in congealed sauces.

Whilst on holiday we contacted Expedia to find out whether or not Thompson were the least wide and shortest pitch seats available on flights from the UK to Los Palmas. Their reply is awaited.
OK mistakes can be made by travel representatives but it was a shock to have a card from ours stating we were scheduled to leave a week earlier than anticipated. Although this was corrected we did not get a similar card correctly confirming transfer arrangement for our real departure date! We were certainly a little worried when our transfer taxi was ten minutes late.

The return flight was even worse! We arrived at the airport at the time arranged by Thomson only to find we had to wait in a Thomson queue for a Thomson check in desk for 50 minutes. Whilst uncomfortable and inconvenient it does not make commercial sense. We just did not have time after completing airport security for duty free shopping at the airport. Another example of the total inhumanity of the travel arrangements was the shuttle bus filled with passengers was parked in the sun next to the aircraft with doors closed and inadequate air conditioning. After ten minutes one of the passengers started hammering on the windows to the coach driver outside. “Open the doors- open the doors” he shouted.

We promised to mention the happy and smiling members of the Thomson flight crew seated opposite us for take-off and landing. They were so happy and enjoying their teamwork that we confessed the return meal, prepared in Gran Canaria, of sweet and sour chicken was an improvement on the one on the outgoing flight!

Hopefully we will be able to find better travel arrangements to enjoy this magnificent hotel.

Dear Seaside Palm Beach Guest,

We wish to thank you sincerely for taking the time to write your comments on Tripadvisor concerning your recent stay at the Seaside Palm Beach.

We are delighted to read that you fully enjoyed the part of your holidays you spent in our hotel, our outstanding cuisine and first-class service.

We are also very content to read that you savoured the quality of our breakfast and dinner buffets as well as our menus. As the welfare of our guests is extremely important to us, we were glad to be able to solve the problem with your suitcase immediately.

As we are always eager to maintain our quality standards, we highly appreciate any comments of our guests. We take into account your observations concerning the smoking policy in our hotel and we like to respond to it.

All of our rooms are non-smoking; smoking is merely permitted on the balconies. Smoking during breakfast- or dinnertime is only allowed in the small particularly designed smoking-area, which is on purpose not located close to the food counters.
Indeed, you have a point when mentioning that the room manuals do not provide sufficient information about the general smoking policy in the hotel. We would like to thank you for your remark and we will implement that in the near future.

We appreciate your support and look forward to welcoming you again at the Seaside Palm Beach.

Kind regards,

Roció Cibrán

This was our second visit to Palm Beach and we were not disappointed. Part of the Seaside Hotels group, the clientele are predominantly German, with a mix of other European guests.
Renovated only a few years ago, the hotel has a fresh and airy ambiance. The bedrooms are spacious, with seating area and balcony, and nice firm beds .The SERVICE here is first class. From the moment you arrive, the staff cannot do enough to ensure that everything is to your satisfaction. The pool area is spacious, there being three pools-one for children, which is slightly apart from the main pool;the main pool has plenty of loungers-and pool attendants supply towels etc..;and thirdly there is a warm water relaxation pool and spa, hich provides a varied programme of treatments.
The quality of the FOOD is excellent. Most meals are served outdoors throughout the summer season, and there is a pleasant mix of A La Carte and buffet on alternate evenings. The buffet however is fresh-all meats, fish etc prepared before you and to your taste. The choice is splendid---you will want to try everything ! The attentive waiters will also assist you in choosing an apprpriate wine to accompany your meal.
The location of the hotel is ideal-being only a few minutes from the beach;shops;promenade;a choice of golf courses: and bus station-should you care to venture out and explore the island. The concierge will be happy to arrange taxis, golf tee times etc., or any other outing you would like to make.
This is our favourite hotel in the Canaries, and I would recommend it to discerning couples, or families with well behaved children! (There is an excellent childrens programme in place).

Room Tip: Type B rooms are best quality and size.

We were unsure of the location when we arrived and are not frequenters of large hotels normally, but felt the facilities and quality sounded great an we were not disappointed.
The pools are fantastic, plenty of sunloungers in good positions, pool service was great, gardens and activities are all really nice and never felt bored or overcrowded. The place was busy, but sensed this is due to lots of people returning to visit again, they deliver and people like it.
The food is really really good and you have a very varied choice at all times of the day, it is a major highlight and thank goodness there is a gym and spa to work it off.
The staff are really friendly apart from one chef guy serving at the barbecue who needs to cheer up and scowl less. The staff work incredibly hard and are first class. They were really attentive and made us feel very welcome in this international crowd.
Most of the regulars are older than us and fairly well to do and for fans of Little Britain there are one or two Bubbles De Vere´s which made us smile.
Really impressed with their solar thermal array heating the pools, had hoped for a guided tour being a green family that we are.
We tried a nice Italian restaunrant one evening in Maspalomas which was a highlight in a rather manufactured and dull location. We didnt come here for the sights though and I am sure there are other places you can go and visit in the mountains which looked nice from our sunlounger...
If you are looking for a relaxing quality break with top class food facilities service and enough people around you to make you feel you have company if you want it but at the same time able to blend into the background with no pressure to join in then this is a top choice. We would like to come again.

We found the extensive gardens and pools lovely, the children were particularly well catered for with a good heated kids pool, water slide, paddling pool and playground. The food was fantastic, particularly the buffet breakfasts and regular buffet bbqs in the evening. The poolside bar also served great food although we found the service slow and often the wrong order arrived. We were disappointed with the bedrooms which we found very small even though we had interconnecting rooms for the children. The bathrooms are clean - but tiny, and only have a walk in shower and no bath which is not great with young children. The hotel interior is very retro and you need your sunglasses for the bar area its so brightly coloured, its also rather noisy as they have regular live entertainment which can go on past midnight and this sound carries to all the rooms facing the pools. We found it too loud particularly with young children trying to sleep. The hotels spa is fabulous and the treatments out of this world, expensive but worth it.

Room Tip: Go for the highest floor and not over the bar.

Dear Seaside Palm Beach Guest,

Thank you very much for your comments in Tripadvisor.

We are delighted that you and your family enjoyed your stay in our hotel and we want to thank you for your positive comments.

As you will have seen during your stay, the hotel has been refurnished in 2002 in the retro 70’s style, making it very unique on Gran Canaria. The strong colours, use of chrome and glass throughout the hotel decor are very appreciated by many of our guests. But of course whether everybody likes it, it is still a matter of personal taste.

The hotel was constructed in 1974. In this period, building styles were very different to the styles employed today. This unusual structure is what enhances the uniqueness of the Seaside Palm Beach, and is why we are a member of “Design Hotels”, an association renowned for its emphasis on the design elements. Consequently our bathrooms have been furnished to a very high standard making the most of each bathrooms size and shape.

We assure you that the comments you have made regarding the noise level will be addressed.

Again, we want to thank you very much for your visit in the Seaside Palm Beach and hope to see you soon.

Kind regards,

Roció Cibrán

I have reviewed this hotel before, and returning a year later it is still the best hotel in Gran Can.

The best thing about the hotel is the quality of the facility. It is kept spotless and the staff are amazingly helpful and friendly. Gran Can is a kitsch throwback to the 70's and this hotel is a five star version. It is particularly 'seniors' friendly and most of the guests are german retirees. They have money, they are demanding of high standards of food/service/cleanliness and they like to dress for dinner. DO NOT expect this hotel to be a great place for kids (though, they have a new club for kids which looks good but empty); it is not a hotel for nightlife...the acts they hire for the bar are hilarious in a camp kitschy way..it is a great spa facility though the 'nudist' sauna area is like a geriatric centre (you have been warned!). The food is good. The buffet for dinner as a BBQ is great, but after a few days you tire of the same selection. Breakfast is the best with a great new coffee machine! Lunch as the African bar is good...and, if you catch the weekly fashion show which happens while you are lunching it is hilarious...an interesting take on eurovision glamour.

The hotel is a member of the design group of hotels and the sister hotel is the SIDE in Hamburg which is great. The hotel is very gay friendly, and an international welcoming venue. This year they have more english tv channels and free wifi..hurrah!

the rooms are hit and miss...if you get a seaside/ocean view on an upper floor (hit!) if you get ones overlooking the pool lower down (miss). some are in garish colours (coral!) while most are either blue or beige. So, make sure you see the room first. The locker room for late departures is a bit ropey...they could improve this facility, but overall the hotel is a 5 star experience. The beach is just a minute away as are the dunes...what is left of them after the winter storms, but they seem to be fixing the beach. The pool may be the better option.

The service from the front desk was hit/miss and the concierges are all good, as are the door staff/porters. All the employees seem to like their jobs, and many of the guests return every year which is a testiment to both the hotel and Gran Can. If you do go, it is worth shopping at the Varadero centre and Lopesan walkway. There is a good Italian restaurant there (Grand Italia). If you go to Playa del Ingles (Yumbo centre - an NCP car park w/ gay bars and tacky shops but wonderfully camp and silly) - there are two good restaurants (Greek Village if you want greek, or Riminin if you want Italian). Mundo cafe is good too. But, if you want gay nightlife - don't go before 10pm, it is empty. If you want straight clubs - head to the beach area, or the bars on Avenida Tirjana..it seems the scandinavian bars were the most lively, and the Irish bars had the most revellers.

Las Palmas is a great day excursion if it rains, or rent a car and drive to Mogan or inland. Gran Can is a great island, and many different types of scenery. However, be warned - it does rain off and on, even though maspalomas is the farthest south and gets the most sun, it can be three seasons in one day. So, if you wake up w/ blue skies...get out and enjoy, as they might not last between Oct - May. Summer is more blue sky continually - but, the dunes/sand gets HOT! Just back and it was a perfect temperature and the sea was perfect to swim in and body board.

All in all - Seaside Palm Beach is a great venue to relax and rejuvenate. Book online - much better packages than direct with most major UK and German tour operators.
