We have been to Gran Canaria several times. It's a short haul destination with pretty much guaranteed good weather. Often we have been left a little bit disappointed by the standard of accommadation on the island. This time we decided to splash the cash and try the Grand Hotel Seaside Residencia.

We decided to try the half board option as it seemed the best value, dinner for only a little more than the B&B rates. Try sites such as Expedia for 10% off.

This is a seriously classy place with lots of German influence. Many of the staff particularly the management team are German but switch effortlessly from German to Spanish to English. On one occasion when we phoned from our room and were spoken to in German initially the member of staff apologised profusely immediately switching to English.

Several things are complimentary: an international newspaper of your choice, a litre bottle of Italian water, a large fruit basket replenished daily, L'Occataine toiletries. There is a fresh towel service in the evening as well as the turn down. We requested still water instead of sparkling for our room; it was replaced swiftly and we always had still water left for us after that. Ice was bought to our room when requested.

We got the feeling that if a guest asked for something however unusual it would be found from somewhere. This is a small hotel (about 100 rooms) and there are a lot of staff so there is always someone on hand to assist you, fetch you something, make you a drink.

We found the place very relaxing and peaceful. Guests are generally 60+ affluent male / female couples and it might be too quiet for some but that was something we really enjoyed. Dinner is the main event and we were really glad that we had opted for the half board option. There is a four course menu with two or three choices for each course. The food is beautifully presented and tastes as good as it looks. Twice a week there is a barbecue buffet and despite the wonderful food one of these nights turned out to be our favourite. Paella, prawns and various fish choices and or steak, lamb chops and so on.

It was my partner's birthday while we were away and when we got back to our room from a day by the pool there was a tray with a strawberry and chocolate gateau with a birthday card from the hotel. The posy of flowers - a really nice touch, thank you.

At the start of our holiday, Assistant Manager Frau Hecke gave us a tour of the hotel and then managed to remember our room number later in the week when she seated us for dinner. Impressive especially as the hotel was about 90% full that week.

There are lots of people who won't like this hotel but that suits us just fine because we loved it and we'd like there to be some space when we can afford to go back! We were told it is closed in July 2012 for bathroom refurbishment. This would clearly improve things as we would prefer a separate shower - currently there is only a shower over the bath. For the price, I would expect the choice.

The one thing that concerned us before our trip was that it was seriously pricey (over £400 a night) and worried that it would not be significantly different from other hotels we have stayed at in Gran Canaria for half the price! However, the service sets this hotel apart from others as does the very many 'extras' provided as standard.

Well done to the grand residence ... don't rest on your laurels!!

Room Tip: We had ground floor Garden view CAT B. It was very private. Pool view is a little busier and probably sunnier if you want sun on your terrace or balcony.

Dear Guest,

We wish to express our gratitude for writing a review on Tripadvisor regarding your recent stay at our Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia.

As it is part of our philosophy to provide our guests with outstanding culinary highlights and an excellent service, we are delighted to hear that you had an overall wonderful stay with us.

Furthermore, we are pleased that you enjoyed our calm and luxurious ambiance, which is also a very important quality of our hotel.

As you have pointed out correctly, we will close the hotel for a month, mainly to renovate the spa and wellness center completely. Simultaneously, we seize the opportunity to renovate some of the bathrooms and hope that you will enjoy the improvements on a future stay with us.

We would be delighted to welcome you back at our Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia and remain

with kind regards,

Wolfgang Tesch

Maspalomas is geared to the mass tourism market. A walk along the prom introduces to the largely retirement age, mainly germanic, pensioners getting their winter sun. In the midst of this world is the gran hotel residencia. This hotelcontinues to provide luxury, both in rooms, facilities and not least, food. We have now spent a number of Januarys holidaying here, and every year is excellent. Not a hotel for children, they will get bored or knock something valuable over! Amongst the high points at this hotel is the half board rate. For not alot of money one can dine on michelin standard food at night. Breakfasts have been mentioned before, but there can be few places offering the range of choices, or freshly cooked breakfasts! There can be few places in the world to equal this gem amongst the 'also rans '

This wonderfully comfortable hotel has significant repeat business, which is no surprise. Most of the returning guests request ,and are allocated the specific room of their choice by number.Such return business can bring difficulties of exclusion to new business - it is a matter of balance - both from the management viewpoint and the guests - not always uderstood.
The food service is of a value and innovative quality well beyond its pricing and many use half board terms as a result.

Wednesday and -Sunday barbecues are truly feasts of boundless satisfaction - both to the eye and the appetite.

It is very rare in these times to witness both the owner and the General Manager in daily attendance to the welfare of the guests...............it happens here!

The wine list, evening music, spa services, treatments, gymnasium, thalasso pool, accomodation and local interest potential are all of the highest quality - to be expected in an hotel of this excellence. Those who require closer access to the beach (5 walking minutes) probably chose the wrong hotel for their tastes.

Front of house is done very well and with great enthusiasm and energy - clearly mistaken for rudeness by some past reviewers.

The housekeeping functions appear to be divided into three seperate duty schedules - which gives rise to some inconsistencies due to lack of synchronisation..........can be improved although efficient in cleaning

The pool photograph on the web site is very misleading and can be off putting suggesting severe lack of space. Not so,the pool side is open, well managed and maintained throughout the day.

This hotel has an excellent location for golf and other good local and natural interests.

The guests are typically well mannered, mature people who clearly appreciate that the hotel provides a true paradise of peace, relaxation and island exploration.

There are many holidaymakers who would find such an environment not to their liking - some have reviewed earlier.

This hotel is based on "old money"investment from a very long time ago and one would expect some traditions of courtesy and service to be sustained.....and they are!

Room Tip: you MUST speak to your agent or the hotel direct otherwise you may be allocated an unsuitable room. Many guests who have stayed several times in the past insist on a particular room when booking direct with the hotel.east facing for morning sun and evening cool.Overlooking the pool is a decent location, especially first floor.

It has been indeed a pleasure in reading through your detailed observations and excellent feedback, thank you very much for the time taken and please rest assured we all will work even harder in order to work on our areas of improvement and to increase our guest satisfaction. I took already the liberty to talk to our Executive Housekeeper in order to synchronize certain daily tasks in a better way.

Thank you for your feedback with reference to the pictures on our website regarding the swimming pool, this will be best taken care of, as our Sales & Marketing Department has already been informed.

We all wish you wonderful and sunny days here on Gran Canaria and the entire team will remain at your service 24 hours per day.

This has to be one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. The reception staff went out of their way to be friendly and welcoming. The setting is very peaceful and attention to detail is evident. The decor of the room was Spanish colonial style and very comfortable and clean. The breakfast buffet was amazing with a varied choice of food. The grounds and swimming pool area are well manicured with an abundance of bougainvillaea and palm trees. Superb dinner menus. We stayed there over the Christmas period and an extensive Christmas programme had been organised. An excellent venue if you're seeking peace and quiet.

This is an expensive and well maintained hotel. The location isn't great as there are no sea views and a five minute walk to the beach. Over in the large srea of and dunes you can expect to find a large number of gay nude men. Staff at the hotel lack the confidence that you expect to find at a 5 star facility. Finally, most of the guests are likely to be German and many of them will be over 70.

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for your comments on Tripadvisor.

It has been a pleasure welcoming you at the Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia in December 2011.

We regret to hear that the location and our staff did not meet your expectations.

The beach of Maspalomas has an extra nudist zone, which is remote from the other part of the beach, so that every person can enjoy its preferences.

As we are always open for improvements, we would like to know your observations more detailed regarding our employees lacking confidence. Please be so kind and contact me directly at the hotel.

Once again, we wish to thank you for your review and wish you all the best.

Kind regards,

Wolfgang Tesch
