“Here to Infinity”

We loved everything about the Clubhotel Riu Gran Canaria. We were there for a week from 1st March and found the staff helpful and friendly, the room and bathroom clean and newly refurbished, as was the whole hotel and the large selection of food was good quality and well presented. The pool areas were spotless, the gardens were neat and green. The children had a large area with their own pool well away from the other pools and the infinity pool was great fun. It helped that we had good weather and lots of sunshine but we really enjoyed this hotel, even the Riu entertainment, not usually one of Riu's strong points, was amusing and diverse. The hotel has easy access to the promenade at the rear and a short walk takes you to shops, restaurants and the beach. There were enough areas around the hotel that you could easily escape from the noise around the pools and find a quiet spot to relax in the sun. We plan to go again this time next year, it was the best hotel and resort we have visited on the Canary Islands.

Room Tip: If you like a good view from your balcony it is best to ask for a room on the fifth floor.

We have just come back from a weeks holiday at this Hotel and thoroughly enjoyed it. We decided to book this Hotel for my birthday after reading the good reviews from TripAdvisor and glad we did. The Hotel itself has recently been refurbished and you can certainly see this from the lobby area to the bedrooms. Everywhere was incredibly clean and tidy with new furniture/seating in the bar/dining areas. Our room was excellent, with a large double bed, fridge, smart TV, massive powerful shower and balcony looking over the sea. The Hotel is all-inclusive so you have several places to eat in the evening (all buffet) - the main dining area, an asian restaurant, a grill and a canarian restaurant. The last 3 you need to book at reception (worth while booking them all at the same time as they do get busy) For breakfast and lunch you have two places to eat - the main dining area or the sea front restaurant (where the grill is in the evening) Same food in each but I personally would do the sea front one for the views. The food overall is very good, plenty of choice and good quality. We did eat out a couple of times but that was only beacuse there is a great Italian restaurant in Meloneras. Branded drinks with pop, beer, wine and slushes on tap at most bars/restaurants. There are 3 pools (the main pool, a childrens pool and more of an adults pool) - all with plenty of sunbeds available. Two bars are situated around the pool area but no waiter service. There is also a gate at the rear of the Hotel which takes you onto the promenade - nice walk up or down here to the bars/restaurants/shops. This is a fantastic Hotel and would recommend this to anyone.

We had been to the hotel before the refit and chose it for a February break mainly because of the location in melanomas. The hotel has changed quite considerably and at the moment for the better. I'm not sure that this was the better refurb I have ever seen and I wonder how long it will take before it shows wear and tear but for now it is excellent. Large flat screen TV (albeit on a slight slant!), good size room and bathroom and everything you would expect from a 4* hotel. The only downside was that they had used the old fridge in our room but so what. Our room was on the second floor and centrally located - superb views from the balcony but noisy from 7am but as we were only resting during the day it wasn't such an issue anyway and we wouldn't have swapped the location for a quieter room.
Food choice good - although the Asian restaurant wasn't as good as some other Riu Clubhotels. Main restaurant was busy morning and evening but if you wait for a few moment tables always come free and they are quickly set up by the restaurant staff. The Atlantic restaurant was good for an evening and not too chilly even on a February evening. Lots of sunbeds around but a lot of reserving went on which is annoying but not an issue at this time of year. The adult only pool is ok but a little small and very rarely any free beds and children still access the area for food and drink. Bar service excellent and drinks of a good quality although we don't drink wine so not sure how that rated. Entertainment not the best and didn't even try to get inside which was packed but plenty of spare seats outside. Weather was superb throughout the week we were there which made our stay all the better. We would come back but are mindful of the longevity of the refurb. However we like where the hotel is so we'd be prepared to put up with some blemishes as they arise. We like Riu all inclusive and prefer it to other chains mainly because of the freedom of choice and the help yourself scenario so if you want attentive waiter service then this isn't for you. Finally cleanliness - the place was kept spotless by a hardworking team, the gardens are superb and overall we had a good restful holiday that was well worth the money.
Thomsons though had a disaster at arrival when three planes arrived at the same time (planes were arriving early that day) and their rep at the airport just couldn't cope with the sudden surge in arrivals!

Room Tip: Higher floors will be quieter but centrally located ones have the best views.

Well I'm sitting chilling at the end if week one at the clubhotel RIU gran canaria and thought I'd give a review of how it's been so far!

Hotel is in a great location for us, walking distance to shops, bars, etc although we've spent most of the time at the hotel. It's really good and all the positive reviews have said it all. Spotless, friendly staff, good booze etc so we've enjoyed it so far.

FOOD - the food is above average for the usual all inclusive - my wife is vegetarian and we've avoided all inc hotels the last couple of years because it's usually a margarita pizza or a tomato pasta with little else. However most days she's had no problem with meals and enjoyed it. A little tip for RIU - the pasta salads, potato salads, sautéed potatoes, etc - you actually don't need to add chicken or bacon or whatever to them - carnivores like me will eat those things without the meat and they don't really add that much to it but it means there are a number of thing non vegetarian for what is simply not much more than a meat garnish!!

Breakfast is great - a massive choice although I've been a bit boring and mainly had the bacon and scrambled eggs (although no one does bacon like the Brits!)Meat, cheese, fruit, cereal and the strange stuff that some nationalities must eat at breakfast that I can't quite get but each to their own. RIU note - there are other sausages other than frankfurters!!!

We've eaten lunch at the atlantica every day so far - has everything we need. And we've stuck to the main buffets for dinner and I've been delighted - the roasts every night have been superb and I've often had a little of that but there is plenty. Mrs H - reasonable happy.

Final tip for RIU, what's with the butter blocks at breakfast and lunch? They're rock hard and you can't spread your bread or toast without tearing it to shreads - takes forever to soften yet dinner has the little plastic butter portions that soften quickly and easily? Maybe summer is so hot but ....?

Alcohol - all great apart from the white wine. Oh dear it is the worst wine I have ever tasted in a hotel except for Egypt! We've actually ally bought a box of hardy's from the supermarket for our fridge! RIU - add a couple of £ to the price if you must but it is repulsive!!!

Rooms are good and clean. Pools are good too although if you want the adults only infinity pool get up early for a bed or you'll not get one! Not supposed to reserve but they do.

This is - I think - the 5th RIU we've stayed in 3 in the Caribbean and 2 in the canaries. It's the same with other chains too - like IBEROSTAR - but they seem to provide higher quality in the Caribbean - like fridges filled with beer and soft drinks and optics on the wall in your room. Not quite sure why they try harder there - perhaps the Americans and Canadians demand a higher quality? Not complaining, just wondering!

We're thoroughly enjoying our time so far. Got the bus to puerto mogan yesterday and enjoyed the market. Lovely place. Other than that we've enjoyed the sun at the pool.

Will update when I'm home if there's anything to add.

Having stayed last year and enjoyed our holiday we chose to go back this year to see the renovations. we arrived at night and from the outside looked so much better, reception was beautiful and as Riu club members were welcomed back, and given the room next door to the one we had last year (I had e mailed ahead, to request, they said the y couldn't promise ) our room was lovely even a bottle of cava in the fridge, the beds and pillows were fantastic, never been so comfortable. The new pool area was lovely, new sunbeds, plenty of them , plenty of space. The problem came with the dining rooms, they were cold and draughty, not enough seats so people were eating out on the terrace but in an out constantly to get food, banging the doors, it was like eating in a cattle market. The waiters were obviously over stretched, but were not interested, just threw the coffee or glasses on the table, they really couldn't be bothered, waited 10 mins one night just for a glass of water. We had chosen to go for Valentines week this year, but no effort was made to make the day any different, the food and choice of food was lovely , as ever in a Riu hotel, but the whole dining experience was dreadful , I dreaded mealtimes. There was also something going on for 2 of the days with animation teams from other hotels all arriving at the hotel, what a row, they pranced about like some kind of celebs, took over all the daytime activities, and loud music to accompany we love the location of the hotel on the promenade, but don't think we will be returning next February, will try the Palace next door.. recommendation: Thomsons have added a new trip this year to the North of the island, well worth the money, a lovely comfortable day out, in 7 seater vehicles.

Room Tip: we chose the ones at the end of the building, 3 rd floor nice and quiet

Stayed here for 3 days/3 nights with my wife for a short break. We have children but our kind in-laws allowed us to escape for a few days in the sunshine! We booked flights with a charter and the hotel direct. On arrival, check in was speedy and efficient. Lovely reception area with is full of natural light and spotlessly clean. There's plenty of area to sit and relax. Free wifi here too.

The staff were very kind to upgrade us to one of the sea-front suites to the right of the Purple Bar. The room itself was lovely and again very clean. We suffered no noise issues despite being on the hotel front. Sunsets are amazing.

Given the time of year the hotel was fairly quiet and lots of spare sun loungers around the main pool. The infinity pool by the Purple Bar gets very busy. Some guests very obsessive about getting their spot there by leaving towels out early and then leaving them all day. We chose to use the much more spacious areas.

We dined in the Kaori and Atlantico restaurants for 2 nights. Both have a very high standard of food and good service. I will go so far as to say the Atlantico Lunch Buffet was the best I've experienced in any hotel of this type. It was a pleasure to eat there. The main buffet restaurant was fine for breakfast and dinner, although we felt the other restaurants were better. Our overall impression of the food was very good.

The main pools are large and the infinity pool is lovely right on the sea front. There's also a kids pool with what looks like an aeroplane play area in the water. Slides, waterfalls etc. This looked great for families. Probably due the time of year, the pools were generally empty. The hotel staff hold popular Aerobics/Pilates classes in an area just by the pool in the mornings.

At night, we tended to drink in he Purple Bar which was very relaxing, albeit I can see it being exposed to breezy conditions. Same for Atlantico. Staff were very helpful and drink on AI basis were good quality.

If you leave the hotel on the beach front side and turn left, there are plentiful restaurants on the sea front with great menus and lots of choice. There's the old light house and a parade of shops which sell high-end goods. Apparently there's fireworks at the lighthouse at night, although we never stayed for them. Further along there's the beach and then onto the Maspalomas sand dunes (10 mins walk from hotel). Be mindful there is a naturalist area and associated Beach Volleyball! It's a lovely walk to the dunes and there's a good Irish Bar on the way back if you're thirsty!

We really enjoyed our stay in this hotel. Very relaxing with high quality service with good facilities. Next time we will bring the family.

We spent one night in the hotel as part of cancelled flight arrangement - so did not have a chance to fully explore it. But we liked our experience and would not hesitate to come back for longer stay. The hotel appears to be older property that has been recently renovated. It is nicely located right at the seaside promenade although to get to the beach, one needs to walk for about 400meters. The hotel grounds are nicely maintained with swimming pools set in a pretty garden. We had dinner in Atlantico restaurant and it was good. Also buffet food provided at all inclusive basis was not bad. It seems like a good option for holidays in Gran Canaria.
