“dejavu at the Riu!”
Reviewed 1 June 2014

Just as good the second time around. My husband, daughter and I were there for the first two weeks in May. We had been told via our holiday company that there would be work going on at the hotel next door and that there may be some noise. Oh my goodness some work, they knocked the hotel down! That said it did not make any difference to us and our holiday experience. On arrival at the hotel to check in the staff were efficient and checked us in within minutes, not only that we were updated to a sea view garden suite. The suite was spacious and contained one large bedroom and a separate room with a single bed/couch. Our daughter was made up to have her own room.

At breakfast, lunch and dinner, there was an excellent choice and this time at the hotel we tried the Atlántico and Chinese restaurants. Atlántico, we were not that keen on for a few reasons; our suite was directly below the restaurant and each morning we could hear the food being prepared and during the evening when our daughter was trying to sleep we could hear everything that was going on above us. The dining experience at this restaurant was not what we expected, we were not shown to a table and waited on. We thought that the main restaurant had more to offer and the staff were far more attentive and made a real fuss of our daughter, who rewarded them with a felt tip drawing. We were more than happy with the Chinese. We were directed to a table, asked what we would like to drink and then left to choose our meal. The food was good and we had a couple of trips to get some more. The staff here promptly removed the plates from the table whereas at the Atlántico they didn't.

Our daughter (Aged 4 in June) loves it here, particularly the children's swimming pool area. She made a friend there of the same age and happily played all day. We never struggled to get a sun lounger throughout our 14 night stay which took a great deal of pressure off in the morning. We hired a car for a week and even when returning to the hotel in the late afternoon we still were able to get a good spot by the pool.

We would whole heartedly recommend this hotel and I suspect will be returning next year.

Room Tip: If offered an upgrade to a sea view garden suite ask if it is directly under the Atlántico. If it i...

After visiting the hotel 3 times about 4 years ago we returned as it had been refurbished and were not disappointed. The whole ambience of the hotel is one of relaxation and splendour and the refurb has been completed exceptionally well.
We had a Garden View Room on the ground floor, and whilst building works have started on the Hotel next door this did not really bother us as we were there to 'flop and drop'. The whole 10 days were great and we saw some of the staff that were there when we last visited, and were well received.
If there is one thing I would say is negative, it is that the food has slightly deteriorated, still a good variety in choice but slightly less well served. Having said that this hotel is well worth a visit, and the setting and surrounding areas are superb.

Room Tip: Work is currently underway knocking down the Rui hotel next door. Work is during the day and does n...

Firstly this island seems to have different weather at the airport to the Maspalomas side of the island, thankfully! We arrived to a cloudy sky but by the time we arrived at the hotel, blue sky and sun was shining to beckon us on to the sun-loungers! Weather for our post Easter break was far better than I was expecting. Sun is very intense - watch very high UV rating - but a very comfortable heat.
Really liked the modern airy feel of this hotel.
Very efficient check-in by friendly helpful staff.
Nice bright fresh room with excellent storage. Good size balcony and although we looked out over a quietish road, (sea could be seen to the side!), we had the bonus of the evening sun on our balcony. (Wasn't a fan of the smoke emanating from other's balconies - don't know if there are no-smoking wings of the hotel?) Very comfy beds! Great shower!
Plenty of sunbeds, parasols and some located in more shady parts. It really is lovely around the beautiful adult only infinity pool and extended area, but there is less room if you want to move your sunbeds for a bit more space around you.
Pools are great and if you swim before breakfast you are pretty much guaranteed to having it to yourself.
Everywhere here was spotlessly clean and the same can be said for the surrounding area outside of the complex. Great prom area for walks / runs to the dunes or rocks in the opposite direction. Nice having a choice of view!
Restaurants offer plenty of choice - The Atlantico was by far our favourite - of course the fab setting helped, but the Grill nights were enjoyable. (The Asian restaurant is worth going to, but we missed the light, airiness of the Atlantico setting.) More young families here than expected and many still join the 8.30pm dinner sittings and not all the little ones were happy to be there!!
Wine in restaurants was not as good as the Riu we stayed at in Morocco which was surprising to us with the choice of Spanish wines. Cava is available at the bars but not in the restaurants which was surprising. Bars offer great selection of drinks, both on tap - self service and over the bar - delicious Bacardi and cokes! Nice choices of bar areas too. You certainly need never be hungry or thirsty here!
Great range of nationalities staying here which gives a truly 'away' feel - when we stayed, it almost felt as if English / British was the minority.
Didn't attend the welcome meeting (why is it always mid-morn, when you just want to be outside in the sun?!) or use the Thomson Reps but availability is good.
Fitness / activities available for those who want to partake - we didn't, preferring to do our own thing! Nice that the team don't hassle you to join in!
We had a great relaxed week here and whilst there are aspects of some 5* hotels that if ultra critical you could say are marginally better, there was nothing that spoiled our week. Great value and we would consider returning.

We decided to go back to this hotel after having had a wonderful Christmas & New Year holiday 2012/13. Since then it has been refurbished so we were looking forward to seeing the (hopefully) the improvements. We were not disappointed at all. At this point I will mention that there is building work going on in the hotel next door, we were informed of this before we booked our holiday, having decided to take the risk, we were aware of some noise but it did not spoil the holiday.
The staff are very friendly, helpful and work really hard to ensure their guests have a good holiday.
Our check in took minutes, then off to our room, which have been very stylishly decorated and furnished. The beds are amazingly comfortable with memory foam mattresses, we slept extremely well every night.
Restaurants, there are now 4 to choose from, the main one is called Las Dunas, very good variety of excellent food to choose from. El Patio was smaller, quieter and for me more relaxed. The other two have to be pre booked, the Asian, Kaori served delicious dishes ranging from sushi, Thai, Chinese all well prepared with lots of choice. The Atlantico which is part of the new refurbishment is built on the vast expanse of decking which overlooks the sea. There is open area for those that like to smoke they can in this section, then there is the enclosed area which is glass walled so you still have the feeling of dining outside. This again is bookable, when they serve Canarian Cuisine or Grill. We ate twice at the Atlanitco when they were serving a Grill, it was excellent both times.
Entertainment, it starts at 10.30 in the mornings when the Animation Team come on the go, what a nice group of many different nationalities they are at this hotel. They are not just entertainers, they are intelligent, fun loving guys and girls who work hard to ensure you have as good a holiday as possible. Now I know that playing games is not everyone’s idea of fun but it’s a very good way of meeting people and making new friends. My hubby and I are both retired but it doesn’t stop us playing French Boules (every day) pre-lunch crazy game and Shuffle Board later in the day. For those who like water there was Aqua Gym, which I have to say I have never seen so many guests taking part before, it looked great fun. There was also Zumba, salsa and a Stretch/Pilates classes. Courts to play Volley ball & Football and table tennis, even rifle shooting, theres also a gym and Spa. I think its safe to say this hotel has everything to make a good holiday. This hotel has Riu Land for the little people who I have to say had loads of great fun with the staff looking after them
The entertainment doesn’t stop there, there is live music outside on the terraces every evening, Riu Land Party every night for the children, followed by shows for the adults many were done by the Animation Team and were very good, some hilariously funny. We watched spell bound one night a Thai acrobat show. If you still have energy left after all that you could dance in the Bubbles Disco.
I’ve gone into great detail about this hotel but its hard not too, it was so darn good. Will we go back, yes without any doubt.
And finally a special thank you to Katy, Gabriel & Lorena part of the Animation team we had so much fun with them, they made a good holiday an excellent holiday.

We've stayed at this hotel three times now and we're just as impressed as the first time we visited. The staff are friendly and very well trained. The food was plentiful and varied. Everywhere was clean and tidy, even the grass clippings get tidied up!. The refurbishment last year has brightened the whole place up and the Atlantico Restaurant/Infinity Pool/Purple Bar development overlooking the sea is just superb. Our only complaint was with the bathroom towels which are often painfully thin and old. We spoke to the assistant manager about them so hopefully this may be resolved soon (especially when considering how much they have spent on the refurbishment) but this won't stop us coming back again in a few years time.

Finally, Yes there is a building site next door and Thomsons did forewarn us about the probable noise and dust. The Riu Palace next door is undergoing a total refit that should be completed by Aug/Sept. It didn't really bother us as we just went towards the other side of the pool during the daytime.

Hotel is lovely - great food, pools, clean, friendly staff.
But we only stayed there one night as next to it (the ex Riu Palace) is a building site, we were woken by clanging, thumping, digger engines and jackhammers. The Thomson rep offered to move our room to the other side of the hotel, but the building site noise was quite present around the pool area - might not bother some but I can't have a 'premier' chill out by the pool with that going on. Apparently the building work does not stop early afternoon.
Of course the rep said we should have been told about it but we were not.
The rep was helpful and arranged to move us to another Riu nearby.
