“Very good holiday in Maspalomas”
Reviewed 1 August 2014

After staying 2 weeks at the Clubhotel Riu Gran Canaria overall our holiday was very good. It is a beautiful hotel in an excellent location situated right on a promenade and close to shops, restaurants and a 10 minute walk away from Maspalomas beach. We checked in in the early hours of the morning and the reception staff were very welcoming and friendly. The rooms are excellent: very stylish, clean, modern, and the beds were very comfortable. However be aware that some of the rooms overlook the building work next to the hotel which was an inconvenience for us as the work is major but the hotel managed to change our rooms after 3 nights. This work is due to be completed by the end of August 2014.
The hotel is set in beautiful grounds which are well maintained along with a main swimming pool, a well thought out kids pool, a baby pool, and a fantastic adults only infinity pool. One of the downsides for us is the size of the main swimming pool. July is a very busy time of year and the main pool just wasn't big enough, it was standing room only; you couldn't swim, especially when water-based activities were taking place. Sunbeds were not supposed to be reserved, but they were therefore for a good sunbed you had to be an early riser! Another problem with the pool area is there is no pool bar (there are 2 bars within the pool areas but you were not allowed to enter wet!!) Plenty of sunbeds were available and even though toilets were situated around the grounds they were insufficient.
All of the food provided by all of the restaurants was to a very high standard-we couldn't fault it in any way! The waiters and waitresses were all very friendly. However if you sit outside to eat be aware that there are a lot of smokers which put us off our food.
Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our holiday but shall not be returning to the hotel due to the lack of space in the main pool.

Stayed here from July 19th to July 30th as a family of four, including 2 teenagers aged 15 and 18.

Check in no problem and we got 2 rooms next to each other (as requested through the travel agency). We were on the 3rd floor (nrs 3149 and 3150) which was great: no noise from the restaurants, construction going on at the other side of the hotel where an extension to the Riu is being built. Great beds and we slept well every night. Great bathroom with excellent shower. Rooms are not that big but then again: you don't go there to sit in your room all day... Great TV but not a lot of English programs but we discovered that with the "tools" button on the remote you can change the language on the TV programs to English. Kids were happy with this! There is no explanation by the hotel on this matter.
During our first couple of days the food in the main restaurant could not be faulted but it went downhill from there: repetitive and not so much on offer. We even had the impression that there was a shortage at some point. The main restaurant does have a "canteen" feel with bright lights and people rushing about everywhere, trying to snatch the last piece of bacon before you can. Some people REALLY should learn manners! Same for their children. You can also eat out side and true, there is a section there where you're allowed to smoke and why not: you are outside after all. Plenty of seats where nobody smokes. We went to the Asian restaurant several times just to have something different to eat and found this very good. Bar service is fast and good and you can always get water, soft drinks and coffee from the machines. Bottles of water are always available at the reception. The main bar does close at midnight and not a minute later. We (and several other guests) were still having a drink at midnight and all the lights went out, bar was closed and that was that. See you tomorrow!
The swimming pools: too small, not enough of them and PACKED with shrieking kids all day long. There is the infinity pool for adults only but to get a sun bed here you have to get up in the middle of the night to put your towel down. The Purple bar is next to the infinity pool and when having a drink there at 11PM, we noticed that several sun beds already had towels on them... The towel/sun bed problem is the same as in every other hotel: you have to get up early to reserve your little place in the sun and yes, some sun beds with towels on never get used at all. People are selfish, I suppose. The hotel should do something about it but they don't, same as in a lot of other hotels. Apparently there is only 1 part of the main swimming pools where you're allowed to play with a ball so this lifeguard ran around all day telling people to move from one part of the pool to the other if they wanted to play with a ball which we found hilarious as everyone was crammed together on 1 side to the pool all playing with different balls. My kids didn't even want to go in the pools anymore during the last days of our holiday because there was simply not enough room to move about. Not nice. And this was our general impression of the hotel: too many people on a limited amount of space.
We took Wifi for one week and payed 20 euro and this was fine. But should you have to pay for this?

For us, this was not up to Riu standard and we will not return. This hotel is perfect for families with little children. They are well taken care of and the kids pool looked great. But we payed a great deal of money for this holiday and feel let down by what we got in return. We have been on other holidays paying a lot less and having a much better time.

Where do I start! On arrival (1400hrs) were checked in swiftly by an excellent female receptionist who spoke perfect English. We were allocated a room on the top floor as requested, which looked over the beautiful grounds then the sea. The room was excellent and spacious with a very comfortable bed. The restaurants were very pleasant with plenty of choice for all. We chose to eat at the grille which you could easily book at the reception. The bars were well staffed and staff always had smiles on their faces who could not be more helpful. Branded spirits available at all times and good beer/wine on draft. The entertainment team were superb. Being an early riser getting a sun bed at the adult pool was not a problem however be aware gets busy just after 7 am. To sum up we could not find fault with anything with the exception we had to come home. We will return next year that's for sure. Go and sample for yourself honest you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: Any high floor room as this gives excellent view

I don't live a high life so for me the Hotel was excellent from the reception to the room we stayed in to all the restaurants and entertainment areas
The only thing that lets the hotel down and it is an issue that can and should be fixed
The big issue for me as a non smoker is smoking
If you go for a meal you have to walk past the outside tables to get to the inside tables so passing all the smokers
The entertainment areas are split smokers to one side and non smokers to the other
The part where our room was on the first level just up from the entertainment area the stench of smoke as you came out of our room not very nice
However I have left the worst to last we only used the adult only pool so can't comment on the other two pool areas
Even from the first day I was amazed how many people at the pool and around the pool were smoking
The first day I still enjoyed myself the next day was our last after seeing drinking glasses used as ashtrays we decided that would be our last time lying around the pool so we ended up walking along to the beaches around this part of Melonares so missing out on our all inclusive holiday
The funny thing is they have a lifeguard who keeps an eye out for any kids in the pool
but they don't have anybody to keep an eye on what the smokers are doing
If we in Scotland can have smoke free pubs and restaurants then it should not be to difficult to fix this
I'm sorry about having to moan apart from this the hotel and the staff the food and the entertainment are all excellent
This is just my personal opinion if your a smoker or you don't mine smoking you'll wonder what the point is but for me it is a big thing

Room Tip: Our first thought oh no We were in 1155 last room level with the road but when the sun comes round...

Booked the hotel through Thomson and stayed 11 nights (we wish it was longer!!) we travelled as a young couple (21 and 25) and loved every minute we spent at this hotel.

We arrived at the hotel quite late, about midnight. The reception staff were very informative and spoke good English. When we got to our room we wanted additional pillows and as the only member of staff around was a cleaner we asked them and within 10 minutes he knocked on our door with huge fluffy pillows!

The room was spotless and modern. Large smart screen flat TV. The TV mainly had German speaking channels but you can change some of the channels into English using the tool menu. We were a bit gutted to one of the rooms who had the view of the hotel being refurbished next door but after a long day decided to mention this to reception the next morning. However, we noticed that the building work did not bother us in the slightest and when the door was locked you couldn't hear a thing really, even when they were working away so decided to stay put in our room. Lots of storage space, free safe, a fridge, water (if you go to reception you can get free bottles of water from here)! The bathroom was also lovely with a power shower and large mirror with a hair dryer.

The grounds of the hotel were very well maintained. The pool area was always so spotless and workers were very quick picking up empty glasses etc. The infinity pool was amazing - adults only! Had a nice view and a nice breeze throughout the day when it got hot, unlike the main pool as it was further down.

The service by all staff was very high. All staff worked VERY hard and were polite. There was an issue with a large number of students when we were at the hotel who were diving into the pool fully clothed, being very loud and rude to the other guests - the hotel manager was very good with this and assured us that he would have more security around the hotel to prevent the noise levels and rowdy behaviour and he did, the students didn't bother us from then on.

The food was good. Breakfast you had the choice from hot food like bacon, sausage, eggs (fried, scrambled, boiled, omelettes), pancakes etc! As well as the standard continental breakfast, cereals etc. Lunch also had a wide variety and dinner had a new special every day, even for the fussiest of eaters like myself! There were beef casserole, Mexican chicken fajitas, all kinds of meat, fried and grilled vegetables, lasagne etc!

Drinks were very good. Soft drinks and slush drinks were self service, as was hot drinks and beer. The bar would serve cocktails and spirits. Spirits were very generous measures and you could ask from brands if they're behind the bar eg Smirnoff vodka.

The only downside to this hotel was the entertainment. Just the staff miming to songs. We tended to go the purple bar for a drink as it was relaxed (Paco the bar man here was super!) and there was also a couple singing outside the cocktail bar outside reception. If you walk to the back of the hotel if you go left you will come across a supermarket and designer shopping centres and this was only a 5 minute walk in addition to lots of bars and restaurants. If you carried on you'd come across the beach and the sand dunes this was only about a 20 minute walk and this was the more touristy area. Enjoyed that.
We went to the Yumbo Centrum twice during our stay (approx €5 taxi ride) and went to Sparkles Show Bar.... Absolutely hilarious there! But not for the easily offended. They had good promotions on drinks and it was a very good atmosphere.

Avoid the moonlight cinema and spirit of the seas excursion. Janet the Thomson rep was also very helpful.

My boyfriend and myself really enjoyed it here and would love to come back. Best all inclusive 4 star i have experienced.

we have just come back from this amzing hotel. For a hotel with 639 rooms it didnt feel busy. We could get a sunbed at anytime of the day. (However if you want to have a certain spot you would need to get up before 7) we didnt have to wait for a table for dinner and wait for drinks. The hotel is very clean, toilets are spotless for so many quests. We spent most of the time at the kids pool. Really lovely with slides and a large water bucket. International drinks are available with Amstel beer on tap. instead of the local rubbish. Watch out with the drinks as the waiters will give you large measures. The RIU kids club is really good and my daughter loved Ruth and Ramon. This is a fully international Hotel which we love, if you want to have a holiday with loads of Brits this place isnt for you.

For the bad points. Free WIFI isnt very good at all. You get 90 mins a day but the speed is terrible. The food is nice but becomes very boring after the first few nights. I would try and mix it up with the Asian and Grill resturants. These must be booked before hand. You can go as many times as you like. Smoking is allowed around the pool and in the resturants outside. We didnt like this certainly around the kids pool.

Room Tip: The Hotel next door is under construction. This wasnt a problem and wasnt loud. However we stayed on...
