We flew to Gran Canaria in February for some winter sun and golf. The Sheraton Salobre is a hotel within the Salobre golf resort just a half hour drive from the airport. The hotel has a five star rating and is tucked into a hillside beside one of the resort's two golf courses. All the rooms face the golf course and all, I believe have balconies the only down side being that none get any sun beyond midday which in summer may be a blessing but in winter, when it can be very chilly, is a shame.
The hotel staff were all excellent but the reception, which is small for the size of hotel, seemed to be permanently busy although for our entire visit the hotel was fully booked so we probably witnessed them at their most busy. Our room was on the 10th floor (out of eleven) and had a super view as it was also a corner room, number 1031, and I would certainly recommend it - the higher the room the better the view and you are also close to the 11th floor 'sunset' infinity pool and loungers which are superb. The room was spotlessly clean as you'd expect and comfortable without being luxurious and it lacked any special touches - chocolates left out when the bed was turned down (which it wasn't) etc. The size was certainly adequate but I have stayed in much bigger at other 5 star hotels.
Food is provided in a main self-service restaurant, which is also the breakfast restaurant and there are two additional restaurants, an à la carte and a tapas. We tried both but settled back to the self-service buffet as it was good and, obviously, you could eat exactly what you wanted and plenty of it, the portions in the other two restaurants were not generous... The food was good as was the house wine but the restaurant was surprisingly small for the number of guests and was sometimes very busy. I suspect in summer a number of guests eat outside, extending the size of the restaurant greatly, but for our stay it was cold and no one chose to brave the chilly conditions outside.
We chose the hotel because of the golf and I'm glad we did. Alex the hotel's resident pro was unfailingly helpful and the two courses, the North and South, were both interesting although we favoured the less popular but wonderfully scenic North course. The courses are in good condition with fast, true greens and would be a good test for all standards of golf. Our package included six days of golf but when we wanted to play for our last three days it proved rather expensive £65 each plus £30 for the obligatory buggy and this was, we were told, with a decent discount! My advice would be to make sure you pay for your golf in advance as part of a package so that you don't get any nasty shocks.
One down side of our holiday experience was the almost total lack of any entertainment, in fact during weekdays there was none. We didn't want Karaoke bars or dancing girls but a piano player or something/anything to go and see after dinner would have been good.
The hotel provides an hourly mini-bus service into the local town Maspalomas some twenty minutes away. It is a clean, upmarket touristy destination with a huge sandy beach with a naturist section hidden away but we did not trouble it too much as it really was unseasonably cold during our visit.
We certainly enjoyed our stay and the golf but as the hotel is very open, you are in the open as soon as you leave your room, and as it was chilly out of the sun for all our February stay, the hotel had a rather cold feel to it not helped by the very modern design. I think the fact that Porche were displaying their latest car to the world from the hotel speaks volumes of the great location and its design but it is a hotel best visited on warm/hot days and nights.
I must finally write that it does have nice clean pools and sunbathing loungers and beds everywhere! It also has a spa, although you have to pay just to get inside which as a guest seems unnecessary and the treatments are not cheap. So if it is warm and you want a quiet, relaxed holiday and to play some challenging golf you could do an awful lot worse but I wonder if it is quite what you expect from five stars.
