Family of 4 adults 2 teenagers and 1 baby (9 months). We stayed at Mellieha Bay Hotel in August 2011 on an all inclusive basis. We tried to book this hotel independently but Thomson had blocked booked the whole hotel so we had no choice but to go through Thomson.
Not sure what all inclusive means at this hotel as items such as crisps, biscuits, certain cakes & ice creams had to be paid for. Also if the restaurant was open you could not have pre packed sandwiches. You also need to be aware of the times various bars are open, as when one closed another would open (which are all in different locations of the hotel). It would have been good if the beach bar stayed open longer than 4.45pm as it was a lovely spot to sit and take in the fantastic views. What seems to be forgotten is that we are holidaymakers wanting to get away from clock watching, we have paid for the “all inclusive” package and we want to get a drink/sandwich when and where we want it. Beer on all inclusive was Stella Artios.
This hotel is not ideal for pushchairs or the disabled, although there is a lift to floors you still have to negotiate a flight of stairs to get to the lift from reception and there are several flights of stairs to negotiate to get to the swimming pools/beach, which makes it very difficult if you have a child in a pushchair and you are on your own, we often had to relied on the goodwill of other guests to help us.
First impressions of this hotel is that it is outdated. Our room was pleasantly decorated, had modern furnishings, air conditioned and clean. Bathroom door was a sliding frosted one, which did nothing for privacy. All rooms have sea views with balconies. On a health and safety point the balconies have three bars across, which can be climbed on. As we had a baby in our group one of the balconies had a safety grid attached – not much good when baby visited another room. We also noted that the Bar lounge had the sliding window open which also had three bars across but no grid – the drop was about 7ft onto a concrete path.
Flies and wasps are a constant nuisance. Large quantities of wasps are attracted to the soft drinks that have been spilled or left. Dead wasps were seen on the floor close to the pool where they could be stood on and were by one of our party.
All pools were clean and did not use seawater, unlike other hotel pools in Malta.
We found the staff to be friendly and reception staff very helpful.
At lunch and dinner time you need to wait to be marked off and shown to your seat. One evening we waited over 20 minutes to be shown to our seat due to low staffing.
The food selection in the restaurant was good and catered for most people’s tastes, even having a BBQ on one of the evenings, although it would have been good if this could have been available more often.
