We stayed a week here in early october, and having read lots of reviews thought that this would suit us.
Our transfer dropped off at a good few hotels before finally reaching ours, and I felt confident that this hotel looked the best from the outside.
We were pleased with our room, albeit a bit on the small side, nice and clean. The bathroom a bit shabby but again clean. Lucky we were there in October as the air conditioning was utterly useless, but we managed. They do not change bath towels and linen everyday, as testified by a make up stain on a towel I inadvertently caused. They do fold them up to make it look like they have though.... I think a kettle would be nice in a 4star hotel frankly.
The outdoor pools were freezing, but the indoor pool lovely. I usually like to swim in the sea but didn't fancy swimming through the rubbish so abandoned this idea. The beach, covered in cigarette stubs and rubbish and a rather poor effort at clearing away the seaweed could occasionally be observed. I would rather they left the seaweed and sorted the litter.
The bus stop is indeed a five minute walk. We went all the way to Valetta on the bus which took just over an hour and as we were one of the first stops on the circuit had a seat the whole way there, but we were in the minority. There were numerous tales from other guests of waiting for two hours or so at bus stops, but we managed to escape this. I'm not sure I'd fancy driving as the local drivers are crazy! You can walk to the Gozo ferry from this hotel, 10-15 minute walk. Great speed boat trip from the hotel to comino, loved that.
The real disappointment from this hotel was the food. Ok there was a massive selection but it all tasted the same - i.e. of nothing. We were astonished to note that the only way to discern what meat made up a dish was reading the label since in the mouth the taste buds could not isolate it, which was quite surprising. Salad was limp and brown edged. Puddings fluorescent and flavourless. Even the icecream - always three different colours, never three different flavours. I HATE strawberry icecream, but could eat this, didn't taste of strawberry at all! The grill occasionally yielded some better results on the days the meat wasn't overcooked The one exception to the blandfest was the rabbit stew - delicious.
Staff a bit moody and disinterested, but I think that's just the maltese generally!
We liked the remote nature of the location, but if you want to be within easy walking distance of some shops/nightlife this is not for you.
