“Great friendly hotel”
Reviewed 21 April 2012

My husband and I stayed for a week at this resort and the whole experience was just delightful. The staff are so very helpful, they go out of their way and go the extra mile for you which makes you feel that extra bit special.

Our room was comfortable with a large bathroom. We had a sea view which was beautiful at sunset.

It is quite remote, we hired a car to get around, but there is a bus stop outside. Lovely to take walks in the early evening.

Overall we had a fantastic stay.

I have been coming to this place for a few year, and am here again. Actually its time share and a hotel, I know time share has had a bad name, but if you know how to use it and use it well its a great programme. The hotel and the local ones are all great, and because I am a member we get great discounts in the hotel. Over the years the owners have maintained a high standard of service, decor and development. I for one would recommend it. Great Island too, very friendly people and if you like history, its all here.

Room Tip: Well Sea views are the best but a bit more pricy

Stayed there the last week in March. We payed around £240 for 7 nights on the understanding we went to a time share presentation. When the presentation was over we relaxed and enjoyed the rest of our holiday. Malta in the spring is a profusion of greenery and wild flowers. We counted 18 different varieties of flower. The location of the Golden Sands means you need transport if you want to go anywhere. The regular bus service is a great bargain at 12 euros for a 7 day ticket for as many journeys as you wish. The location is also ideal for walking, which we did most days The Golden Sands is a good hotel but 5stars, i'm not sure.

Room Tip: South facing rooms face the bay.

My wife and I spent a week over Easter at Golden Sands. We had a sea view room in sunrise tower which was great. The room, bathroom and furnishings were in very good repair; the only fault was that the carpet in the living room area was a bit stained around the coffee table. The hotel is great if you want a quiet place but Radisson/island residence club should probably organise more activities to liven things up (maybe they do over the summer?). One person to check out is Philip, the barman in Swizzles, who will concoct unique cocktails for you. Prices in the restaurants are not cheap so we ate out a fair bit. We had hired a car which made for an interesting experience - many roads have poor surfaces and signposting was not always great...leading to some 'interesting' detours through very narrow back streets. On the other hand, I found the standard of driving on a par with UK (and certainly better than London and Paris!). In hindsight, as the buses are cheap and the roads very crowded around Valetta, it may have been better taking Arriva buses and/or Drifter van. We also did a couple of try-dives with H2O divers who have an office on the beach. I would definitely recommend them. Planning to return next year to do a full course with them. Easter definitely a good time to visit Malta - decent weather but not too hot (although Esaster sunday was wet and windy) and tourist traps/museums etc not over crowded.

Malta in spring can be windy and we had 4 days of gale out of 7 so less time than expected was spent at the pool. The outdoor pool is not heated, as such are freezing cold in early April. The indoor SPA pool don't allow children much of the daytime. The gym needs an upgrade. If you hire a car, you will have trouble finding a parking place. The Drifter office provides very good service and a private chauffeur like service at reasonable prices. We used it a lot. Rooms are quite big and kept clean and pleasant. The hotel has got a very service minded and friendly staff that helped us with all our requests. The Mokka bar is great. Breakfast in Flavours is very good with a wide selection for every taste and nationality. The timeshare seems to be dominated by british people. As part of our trip (partly sponsored) we spent half a day with the timeshare sales presentation. It was friendly and there was no pressure to buy. All "fantastic offers that is made specially for you" only lasts for 30 minutes so you can't sit back and think it through. As we checked reviews on line, we discovered a high number of complaints about the traveling system they introduce. Basically the complaints gravitated about not to be able to go were you want when you want due to lack of availability so you are stuck, and end up buying your holiday outside the system anyway. We were told that we could exit after three years, but this turned out to be not true, unless they succeeded in a resell of your share/week. It's the common downside of timeshare. You can check out any time you want, but you can never leave. Anyway the hotel it self has a lot to offer to families and couples that wants a break or a getaway.

Room Tip: There are three towers, Sunrise, Twilight and Sunset. Only the end sections on the sea view side of...

Went here for a week with the girls, just what i needed a place where to relax, pamper & also ventured out to see rest of the island. Some say it's out of the way but I disagree as there is a bus stop at the entrance of the hotel if not Taxis or shuttle bus service. Also went horse riding which was great, hadn't been in a horse in 25 yrs, the owners were so friendly & helpful and knew which horse would be suitable to each person, and the place & horse kept very well. The spa treatments were lovely & also used the gym which was very basic & sadly 3 machines weren't working but was able to do something which was good. Just below the hotel is a lovely sandy beach & another 2 in walking distance is you don't mind walking. Restaurants on site were good but the best place was Tarragon in St Paul's bay. Overall great place & thank my friend for inviting me.

This is our third visit to the Golden Sands and each time we have thoroughly enjoyed our stay. These have been over the winter period but we have been lucky each time with the weather allowing us to really enjoy its unique and fantastic view.

Even the basic country view rooms are well laid out with plenty of storage space, really comfy beds and a wonderful large bathroom with separate WC, bath and shower. The rooms also have a nice balcony/terrace and one of our favourite things during a weekend break is they don't charge an extra room service delivery fee.

Fantastic Spa (one of the best on the island) though a very disappointing gym with equipment that isn't well maintained and certainly the cardio machines need replacing. The coffee shop has a good varied menu with very generous portions; I can recommend the Prawn & Avocado Salad and the house burger that is huge. The breakfast buffet is amazing and if you're lucky you might get taken to your table by the very charismatic Maitre D Henri who is in my opinion one of their best members of staff.

In the warmer months drop down to the beach and enjoy the hotel's facilities or venture across to Muchies snack bar if you don't want to eat from the hotel's restaurants. Parking can be a problem especially at the weekend or during peak season and the hotel's outside parking spaces are very limited considering it's remote location. There is a mini bus service run by a local fee that will take you to varies places on the island for a small fee. Be warned there are NO ATM machines nearby and a good 10 minutes drive away by car.

We will be back again soon...
