I got an email offering a week for two in a five-star hotel in Malta off-season for just £49. Seemed too good to be true, but I thought I'd check it out all the same. As expected, there was an unstated cost - this was in the form of a timeshare presentation taking a couple of hours of our break. Well - it still seemed like a really good deal, so we decided to go for it - and we are really pleased we did!
We had never been to Malta - and completely fell in love with the place even as the plane flew over the island on the way in to land.
The hotel is on one of the few proper beaches on the West coast of the island, in the the rural North. This makes it rather isolated, compared to St Julian, Valetta and so on. But nowhere on the Island is more than about 35 minutes away by road and I understand that the buses are really good.
An out-of-season resort hotel is slightly surreal - but this place was actually really quite good. The "Studio" room was plenty large enough for us, and the tiny kitchenette was plenty adequate for us - we ate out pretty much every day anyway. The gym was small, but well equipped; the indoor pool was divine, and the Jacuzzi and steam rooms were great. Unfortunately the men's sauna was out of service - but I understand the Ladies' one was great.
Most of the restaurants in the hotel were closed, but the Moka bar was good for coffee and croissant,in the morning - and a cocktail in the evening. The AgliOlio Italian restaurant was really good. The buffet breakfast we only had on our last morning, but was limitless and impressive.
The actual timeshare presentation was far from hard-sell - our salesman Malcolm introduced himself to us when we arrived, and booked us in for the morning of our last full day. He had organised a free tour and boat trip - but in the end we decided to hire a car and explore instead. We didn't buy the timeshare - it's an interesting proposition, but really not for us.
I am not sure how much I would have liked the place in full season - part of the charm for me was that the hotel felt almost deserted - but if you want a 5 star resort hotel in Malta - definitely would recommend it. And if you want to do it every year - then perhaps the timeshare is right for you.
