Reviewed 16 June 2011

Having stayed here twice now, I have to say that the service and impeccable standards of the Solana hotel had not changed, must to my family and my delight.

Highly recommended to all that are staying in Malta.

If like me you are a lover of food, then the cuisine on offer will not disappoint. Fantastic choice available at every mealtime.

We have been here twice now, once just the two of us and again with my partner's 10 year old son. Both were amazing holidays and the only let down was having to go home!

I love the location of the Solana, just out of the way enough but still close to the beach - it's within walking distance but put your walking shoes on as it is a long down hill walk!

We always opt for 1/2 board which is perfect for us as there is a nice little pastie shop 2 mins away! Food here is always brilliant; wide variety every night and the cakes are to die for! You must try some of the gigantic cookies they offer upstairs too - they are an additional 1.2 euro (i think) but are fab! Breakfast is great with the chef cooking eggs and omlettes every morning - although the fresh fruit is good enough for me!

We also went over to the sister hotel Pergola hotel for a BBQ which you can do a meal exchange - it's great how you can enjoy both hotel's facilities if you fancy a shange :)

Rooms are always clean and we have never had a problem with room attendants not replenishing things! When i arrived on my last holiday i was very poorly (i was sick 2 days before arrival) and my illness lasted 4 days into the holiday and the room attendants couldn't have been better, they crept in to sanitise the room, swap towels and came straight to the room when we mentioned i was going out for 5 mins and the room was sparkling! Don't read into any of the reviews moaning about how it wasn't up to scratch - even the public toilets are kept super clean!

Pool areas and lobby area are always well kept and cleaners are quick and efficient. When you walk into the hotel it looks like you are walking into a palace with all that marble - i just feel sorry for the person having to mop it everyday!

We have had rooms on the road with side sea views on both occasions and have never had a problem - there is of course early evening bus traffic and holiday makers but what do you expect! I loved the fact i could people watch!.

I could go on and on about how much I enjoy staying here and can only compliment the Solana on their great staff, great hotel and great owners! (we met them at dinner one night and were so friendly!)

Keep up the good work and Ian and I can't wait to come back!

First trip to Malta for me and my partner and I could not imagine a more magnificent place to stay. The hotel reception was more than welcoming even at 4 in the morning. The room was perfect and large space with a great balcony view. Food at the hotel is great morning, noon and night. The variety was out of this world and can personally recommend the rabbit spaghetti! Never tried it before but this was delicious. The desserts were lovely too and so much selection. The downstairs pool is a beautiful setting and large. With the hotel having 2 pools neither was ever crowded. With the other pool situated on the top of the building it is a great suntrap and nice to relax with great views.

The hotel is perfectly situated for a nice walk to the beach or a very short bus trip with the stop just outside the hotel. For €0.35!! It has a nice variety of shops around the hotel and places to eat.

The entertainment on a Wednesday with Ernest was amazing.

All in all a fantastic holiday and truly the best I have ever been on.

A beautiful hotel. Beautiful country. Amazing people and the hotel manager was very helpful with any questions aswell as the staff.

Thankyou for everything.

Chris

We stayed here for a week as part of our honeymoon trip to Malta and Italy. We requested a room not facing the street due to the other reviews on here and luckily our request was granted. What that meant, however, was that our balcony "view" was the middle of the building and faced walls and the windows of the other rooms on all sides. Not exactly what we wanted to look at, but what can you do? The queen/king bed was actually two twins pushed together. I know this is quite common in Europe so I wasn't too thrown off, but what wasn't great was that there was no overlay on top to join them so throughout the night the beds would pull apart. Not exactly what you want on your honeymoon. The pillows were really lumpy and the mattresses were hard and not too comfortable. The kitchenette in the room was super basic, one or two pots and pans, a couple utensils, etc but unfortunately didn't come with any salt/pepper, napkins, etc so you might want to consider bringing those/buying those if you're planning on cooking. The first night we arrived the water in the shower wouldn't get hot. We called down to reception and unfortunately the maintenance guy had left for the evening so we couldn't be helped until the next morning. Understandable, but it meant we had to use the electric kettle to wash ourselves which wasn't ideal. The next day after being out sightseeing all day we came back to the same cold water. We called again to be informed that the maintenance man had come and said it was fine. They agreed to send up another guy and we stayed in the room until he came. After some tinkering he left and must have adjusted the pipe somewhere because we had hot water. Unfortunately when taking a shower about every 3 minutes or so the water would get really cold and then get extremely hot before settling into the temperature you had picked. Not really a fun experience. The decor and furnishings were super basic and the TV had only a few channels (2 in English, one of which only came in black and white) but we weren't too concerned with watching TV that much anyhow. The lobby was actually quite nice and had a pretty nice bar downstairs where you could get drinks and dessert. Towels for the beach required a refundable deposit, and if you wanted to keep them for the week there was a charge. There is a nice pool on the roof of the hotel that has a view overlooking Mellieha. Overall the place was fine since we were out of the room most of the time, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it for anyone on their honeymoon or looking for some place romantic or upscale.

We took a last minute deal at Hotel Solana and were very pleasantly surprised to have a really enjoyable stayed at the hotel. Mellieha is not the most lively place in December but we had a relaxing week exploring the local area and catching the yellow buses from outside the hotel to the rest of Malta.

The room we had had a view over the road and bar but we spent more time in the 2 pools and lounge area downstairs so weren't to consindered. Would recommend as a cheap getaway to a scenic part of Malta.

After moving from a 3* hotel from Buigibba..we were looking forawrd to this 4* treat, and we were not disappointed. The hotel situated on the high street and bus stops are very close by. There is free wifi in the lobby and the staffs were extremely friendly. I made a request to have a room at the back of the hotel and they did listened to my request.

I believe the back of the hotel is the new part, although it a little far from the main bit (about an extra 2/3 minutes walk, as everytime you go back to the lobby, you have to go through this bridge connection at level -2).

The room was big, clean and really...you cannot ask for more. The TV was a 1080p LCD screen, there were plenty of wardrobes, a nice table, dressing table and a balcony. Kettle and tea/coffee are supplied in each room. The only downside of the room was that, again its 2 single bed put together. The bathroom looks brand new to me too. With shavers mirror and hair dryer.

The breakfast was amazing! There hot and cold food. Hot food- typical english breakfast and they have a chef whos there to make you fresh omelettes or fried eggs too. There is also make your own waffle. Cold food- a good selection of ham and cheese (nothing like the processed stuff we had in the previous hotel).

Facilities: I give it a 5*. It was too cold to swim at the outdoor pool but the indoor pool was quite big and there's a jacuzzi too. There's also a gym!!

There's a really nice cafe/bar at the lobby with free wifi and on a wednesday night, I believe there is live entertainment too!

The sandy beach is really close by too.. and there is a bus that takes you to take the gozo ferries too.

This was definitely the highlight of my visit!!! Would definitely go back.
