This hotel I can not fault one bit. It is classed a 34 star but would rate it a 3 star but with 5 star service. The rooms were clean and all communal areas Used the gym and indoor pool. Gym facilities were not too bad really and caould manage quite a good upper body work out. The food was good, and i suffer with wheat intollerance ad my gluten free bread and cearels were well catered for. The staff made sure of this. Amanda the manager was so nice.
We are a gay couple in our 40's and we would recommend this hotel as it is gay friendly. We look firward to returning soon.
Mellieha is a quiet resort but the buses run all night to take you out down to the main areas for a night out.

The Solana is a lovely little hotel in the heart of Mellieha. Set quite high up from the beach, it probably isn't for those with limited mobility, although it has bus stops handily situated either opposite or just up the road. We booked a back room on the recommendation of other reviewers - really good advice, because the hotel fronts onto a very noisy main drag. Our room was spotless and kept very clean throughout our one week stay. We booked a junior suite - essentially a large room with a convertible sofa and two hobs to cook on. That was the one down side - don't think about cooking unless you're a microwave expert - the hobs never get up to much cooking speed. Two things weren't working when we arrived - the TV and the towel rail - and they were fixed almost immediately. We paid £800 all in, independently for flights with Thomas Cook and the hotel (about £400 each). That was for B&B and the breakfast is excellent - a full choice and eggs cooked how you want them to order. Tip - if you're staying for at least a week, buy a 12 euro buss pass - it will get you anywhere and avoids the need to book overpriced trips with tour operators.

Room Tip: Choose a back room to avoid the noise from the road

Recently returned after a second visit [this year ]to the Solana ,
We were impressed with the cleanliness of the Hotel also the friendly and helpful staff ,In actual fact the staff appear to be faultless ..they seem to work so hard to make sure that the guests enjoy themselves ,
We had an excellent room with very good facilities .
The Hotel is situated in the centre of the village.which is charming .
Malta is a delightful Island and the people are really special
The Solana is a Hotel we would recommend and look forward to revisiting .,

Room Tip: If you are looking for a quiet room then don't ask for one overlooking the street ,although it...

The Solana was a perfectly good hotel, but doesn't live up to the overly favourable reviews contained here. On the plus side the room was large and the hotel was very clean. No complaints there. The bed on the other hand was not great and despite requesting a double we were appointed twin beds. The staff were friendly, but no more so than they should have been. The food (we were half board) was poor. Much was cooked from frozen and all dishes were bland, so much so after two visits we opted to eat elsewhere. The wine list was atrocious. Not bad overall but certainly not great.

Won't be back to the Solana Hotel. Having e-mailed them a few days before travel requesting a room at the back of the hotel we arrived to find that we had been allocated one to the front on the 1st floor. The traffic noise - buses, trucks, cars etc. was horrendous - might as well have been in in the room with us! We asked to be moved but the night receptionist said there was nothing he could do till next morning. After breakfast - which is just average - we spoke to a member of housekeeping and were told that we could move to a room at the back of the hotel but that there would be a €35 charge for housekeeping!! That was a first for us. We agreed on a payment of €25 and were moved to a room at the back overlooking "the valley" which was, in effect, a derelict area of dumped rubbish. In general the hotel did not meet our expectations, particularly having read so many positive reviews on Tripadvisor before booking. It is a long, long walk down to the beach which is even harder on the way back up! The resort of Melliha itself is unattractive with not a lot to offer.A disappointing experience all roun!.

Dear Guest,

We are sorry to read that both the Solana Hotel & Spa and the Mellieha village did not meet your expectations. At the Solana Hotel & Spa, we work very hard at ensuring our guests’ expectations are met and possibly exceeded, however, as explained in our reply to your email, we can only do our very best in accommodating requests. Nevertheless, your reservation for a Junior Suite was fully honoured upon arrival, hence the charge upon requesting to change to an alternative unit.

While thanking for your time, please do not hesitate to contact us directly, should you wish to discuss this situation in more detail.

Best regards,

Clean, modern and friendly hotel close to some lovely restaurants. BIG downside was that our well furnished, clean room was subterranean and had no windows! We had paid extra for an upgrade before we left so I was disappointed as we had booked this holiday as a treat after a lengthy illness and had looked forward to it for a long time. I did complain on the first night but as we arrived late we were told there was no duty manager and if we moved we might have to move back again the next night. We left for an excursion early next morning and I didn't want to miss it so we decided to try and focus on the positive side of this lovely country and friendly people. When asked by the receptionist if we were enjoying our stay, I mentioned that we had no window and didn't know what we would in the event of a fire but he told me their fire alarm was very loud so he missed the point.

Room Tip: Ask for a window!

Dear Guest,

We are very pleased to read that you found the Solana Hotel & Spa to be clean, modern and friendly; we in fact work very hard at ensuring our Housekeeping standards are second to none and that our Team offers the best of hospitality service at all times.

Where the room is concerned, a non balcony unit was allocated as originally booked, however, we want you to rest assured that at the Solana we have very rigid procedures where fire safety is concerned. All units are protected by fire doors, while, fire exit plans are displayed in each and every room together with the relevant emergency exit signs well sign posted throughout the property.

While thanking you for your time, we very much trust you will not hesitate in visiting us again in the future.

Best regards,

My partner and I Stayed at the Solana Hotel for 10 days .
we found every one of the staff to be polite and helpfull.
The room we had was in the new part of the hotel and was beautifully decorated and equipped.
The food was of a high standard ,plenty of choice and varied each night.
Breakfast was again lovely with Chaka the egg man making exceptional omelletes.
All the waiting staff where very efficient and friendly.
We liked it that much we are thinking about booking there next year.

We had two really good boat trips aboard The English Rose at melliaha bay.
The captain and his mate where a really good relaxed well oiled team...
refreshments on the boat were not overpriced..

The only downfall of the holiday were the buses run by arriva, which were always jam packed full and unable to stop to pick up people so just went straight past. so therefore you could be waiting for a bus to stop for hours. !!!!!!!!

Room Tip: back of the new part of the hotel as in the evening the sun is on the balcony and quieter rooms.
