“Good location but not 4*”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 November 2011

Comparing to the 4* Maritim just a few blocks away, Solana is certainly not a 4*. However, it has its pros and cons.

Pros: Excellent location in Mellieha, bus stop right outside. Very friendly and polite staff. Spacious room. Good evening entertainment. Clean room. English channels include Foxlife, BBC entertainment and Sky news. Although breakfast choices remained the same for the whole week, it has a reasonable range of food for breakfast and quality is good. Free WiFi in the lobby.

Cons: Not to mention the heat in the lobby, they constantly switched off the air-conditioning in our room, had to keep on calling the reception to have it turned on. The room is too hot as our balcony is right above the air-conditioning below. We can't even open the window. One day, they stopped the shower water for maintenance without advance warning. When I called the reception, they said it would be resumed very quickly. But when we checked out, it was still off. I was furious. Didn't have food in the restaurant because we saw lots of flies sticking on the cakes in the cafe. That puts us off totally. WiFi is not accessible in rooms.

Dear Guest,

We are sorry to read that the Solana Hotel & Spa did not fully meet your expectations during your recent stay.

We constantly strive hard in offering our guests a quality holiday experience, however we realise that there may be occasions when we do not fully succeed. On such occasions we welcome constructive criticism, which we evaluate and act upon, when deemed necessary. Where the water issue is concerned, please rest assured that this was not something that was fore planned but a matter of a water system malfunction within a small section of the property.

Please do accept our sincerest apologies for the situation and we very much hope that you will not hesitate in allowing the Solana Hotel & Spa a second chance in re-winning your trust. Should you indeed decide to return to Malta, please do not hesitate to contact myself personally, where I shall do the necessary arrangements to ensure that you will have a positive experience throughout.

Best regards,

Elaine Cutajar Debono

After staying at the Maritim Antonine hotel, we booked 2 nights at the Solana. The price was cheaper (for a half board), so we expected something simpler. The surprise was great: the room was very modern and the restaurant was as good as the other. On Fridays there are BBQ nights, dining at the roof terrace, with a man playing and singing. There were even "crepes" (although I´ve eaten much better ones, for sure, these were a kind of thick pancake but you could eat them anyway)- Those themed dinners are quite surprising, you can find a big range of food, very tasty.

If your room is located in the second building, no matter, the route you have to follow through the corridors is not so difficult (just the first times, maybe, or if you´ve drunk too much, as some of the guests). Those rooms are quiet.

There is a pool on the roof terrace, open from 8:00 till 20:00. If you want swimming pool towels, you have to pay an extra charge per day.

If you want to go to the beach or anywhere else, there is a bus stop not far from the hotel.

The worst was probably the indoor pool and jacuzzi, with too much chlore inside (itchy eyes afterwards). The gym was small but ok.

Would definitely go back.

I am writing this review regarding me and my gilfriend's stay at the Solana Hotel on the 5th of November 2011. First of all I would like to point out how friendly and professional the SPA and reception staff were, namely Amanda and the guy when we left the hotel in the evening.

Secondly on a positive note is the clean and well equipped room.

Dinner was quite good. Surely the best thing was the macedonia (fruit salad) which was very good.

We look forward for another stay at Solana/Pergola since we were very satisfied on our previous stays.

Stayed here with my Fiancee in June 2009 and had a really enjoyable stay. The staff were amazingly friendly from the reception staff to the lovely barista who was pleased to see us most nights. She recommended that the Maltese prickly pear liqueur would go well with Kinnie (my fave soft drink) so you can guess what we drank most nights!

Our room was on the top floor and front facing and although not to everyone's tastes I loved the sound of the former yelllow buses roaring up and down the hill each morning, tooting as they do!! The balcony seemed sunny until mid afternoon too. I've been to Malta many many times (almost 20 times) mostly as a child but can safely say that Mellieha really was the nicest Maltese town I've stayed in. There were plenty of amazing reasonably-priced restaurants lining the main street and our faves were La Amigos and the pricier but worth it Giuseppi's. If we were in Mellieha at lunchtime we always went to the bakery and grabbed a load of 25cent Pastizzi (irresistable) and maybe a cake. We ate in the front-facing restaurant in the hotel one night and had one of the nicest meals of the holiday, I especially loved the Cannoli Siciliani dessert! Hope they're still selling it. The caffebar by reception even had a gourmet Lavazza espresso menu, ideal for an espresso fanatic like myself!! It was a lovely romantic town and I even proposed to my fiancee under the shadow of Mellieha church!!

The rooftop pool and terrace gave super views and was a real sun trap.

All in all we had a fab stay and would highly recommend the hotel to those looking for a romantic getaway or as a great base for sightseeing.

Great great great! We'll definetly be staying again on our next visit to Malta!

Room Tip: If in a front-facing room you'll probably have to wake up when the village awakes which is no ba...

Although very clean, the room we had felt like a dungeon (at level -1) with a tiny window and no natural light. The bathroom window opened up to a concrete slab and the shower flooded the bathroom after every use. To be fair the staff were very friendly, but I certainly would not re-visit.

We are terribly sorry to read that the room allocation has disappointed you to this extent.

While thanking you for your time and consideration, we remain

We have just spent 4 superb nights at the Solana, a Grandma n Grandad taking their 14 years old grandson for a half term break. We are very familiar with Malta, first visiting in 1973, have many Maltese friends, and have been around 20 times. Our first impressions were of a welcoming, well presented and spotlessly clean lounge, bar and Cafe Puccino on the approach to reception..an impression that not only stayed with us for the duration of our stay, but, unbelievably was sometimes even bettered. The smile of the young man on reception, the ease of check in, the fact that even on our late arrival, they were prepared to serve us in the dining room was equalled by the accomodation. We had 2 large bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, even two balconies, very well furnished, a well equipped mini kitchen, and so so clean, infact spotless. We were on half board, enjoying a great choice for breakfast, the same for dinner, and all the time with service, and perpetual smiles in a lovely dining room. Elaine, the youthful, chic manager had a chat with us at breakfast on our first morning, making sure we were being well looked after..we were !! We feel it would be unfair to mention other names, they were all, without exception 'Simply the Best', and each and every one so well presented. We have stayed in many hotels in many countries, none was better than the Solana. Every facility was First Class, and at very reasonable rates..we look forward to our next visit.

Room Tip: The front rooms would probably be subject to traffic noise
