“Escape the winter blues!”
Reviewed 25 February 2012

Just back from a four week stay, self catering, three couples. All agree what an excellent choice the hotel turned out to be. The rooms are spotless and well fitted out, the lounge area comfortable and welcoming with unlimited wifi that works! There are swimming pools in the basement and on the roof and both are immaculately kept.
All the staff without exception are helpful, friendly and professional. Any problems were attended to immediately with a smile. Any questions were dealt with and staff would go the extra mile to find out if they didn't know.
We can highly recommend this hotel.

Just back today, 24/02/12, from 4 nights self catering at the Solana. Everything abbout the hotel was 1st class. The staff were very helpful and everyone off them greeted us with a smile.
and were able to nswer any questions. We ate in the hotel one evening and the food was wonderful and great value for money. Great location for local buses to take you round the Island. Room was spotless and cleaned everyday. We were 1st floor at the front and there was a bit of noise from traffic but that stopped by the time we went to bed and didn't bother us.Would recommend this hoter to anyone visiting the area.

We spent half term at the Solana. It is sometimes difficult finding somewhere to cater for all tastes - especially with a seven year old and grandma with us. The hotel was exceptional. The staff were helpful and well-informed. The restaurant is very good indeed and I cannot recommend it too highly.

In all, we enjoyed the facilities, the friendliness and the relaxed ambience. We shall certainly visit again soon.

Room Tip: The balcony rooms are best - as some interior rooms have no windows.

Just went for a family week end break. The children enjoyed it a lot, especially the indoor pool and kid's area. The rooms were clean and the staff really helpful. The buffet dinner had a nice variety of food and breakfast was delicious. It was really good value for the money we paid.

From 31st Jan to 14th Feb. The Solana Hotel in Mellieha is a short bus ride away from the Gozo ferry and therefore its position on the island is a little out of the way for the busier resorts. However, buses are frequent (although it may not be the number you require when it arrives!!) or there is plenty of car hire available. Our room was extremely spacious with twin beds pushed together, a large dressing table and mirror and a triple wardrobe with plenty of hangers and space. A sparkling bathroom with bath, shower, large sink, plenty of shelving for toiletries, lovely fluffy white towels and a hairdryer. We were self catering and the 'kitchen' was to be found inside what looked like a wardrobe. A kettle, two-ring hob, sink, combination microwave oven, fridge with small freezer and plenty of cutlery/crockery/pans/kitchen tools etc (Only thing missing was a wooden spoon!!!) They even supplied a dishcloth, scourer and tea-towel AND some washing up liquid. The room was spotless with patio doors opening onto a largeish terrace with plastic table and chairs. When stood up inside the room, the view was exactly what I had asked for (view of the sea). However, when sat down on the terrace we were faced with a blank wall!!!! The hotel staff were wonderful, very friendly and courteous. The lobby area was spacious and comfortable with plenty of sofas and chairs. There was a bar area here which sported a tempting array of cakes to accompany our latte coffees. They also served bar meals at very reasonable prices. We didn't use the restaurant so can't comment on that. Two lifts were functioning perfectly to take you to and from your room. Maid service was excellent with plenty of fresh bedlinen and towels. During our stay there was evening entertainment on Tuesday (excellent) and Saturday. Mellieha itself does not compare to the larger resorts but there is a quaintness about it, a huge old church at the foot of the street which rings out its bells, lots of friendly shopkeepers, plenty of cafes/restaurants (the Chinese a few doors away from the hotel on the same side is excellent value for money) and there was a definite buzz about it during the day. One major consideration must be the streets themselves which are very steep in parts. There is a tremendous amount of building work everywhere on the island, roads being dug up, buildings being started (and some left before completion!!) Perhaps it will all be finished before the season starts. The people of Malta are special. They work hard and with grace and good humour. Although the weather was appalling (freezing cold with hailstones (ice, the locals call it), high winds, torrential rain, thunderstorms etc), we had a wonderful holiday touring the island with Arriva buses!!!!! We have been twice now, once eighteen years ago at Easter. There have been many changes, areas have been built up and there has been a population explosion since then. But during the summer months when the skies and the sea are blue and the air is warm, Malta will come alive. (Two words of caution: 1) If you go to Gozo (which you should do), make sure you have either booked a trip or KNOW which bus to get on when you get off the boat, otherwise you will be hounded by some of the taxi drivers who will not take NO for an answer. I know they have to live during the winter, but there's pushy and there's pushy and they're definitely pushy). 2) Beware of the lovely people selling timeshares - they will tell you all sorts to entice you to their lair and of COURSE it's not a timeshare, they'll say!!!! Believe me, IT IS, even when they use the expression "Holiday Club". Though I have to say that our experience was nonetheless a pleasant one and they all do their job!!!!!! To end on a high note ....... The Solana Hotel - an amazing experience for us as I'm sure it will be for you. Go for it. PS: We just got unlucky with the weather - locals say it was the worst winter since 1968!!!!! They are expecting it to be a LONG HOT SUMMER. PPS: Seek out 'The Doughnut Factory' in St Paul's Bay. Absolutely fabulous and well worth the trip. Happy Holidays!!

Room Tip: Some say that the front is best avoided due to traffic noise. We had a room at the side and there w...

We arrived by bus to The Solana Hotel in Mellieha. We were surprised the outide of the hotel was just as it appears in the pictures we have seen on the internet. The lobby did not disappoint either, with a bar and coffee shop/patisserie in the foyer. At reception we were welcomed warmly and offered a welcome 'kinnie'. The reception was full of informative literature for journeys, trips etc.
The room was lovely! Air con, hairdryer, sky tv, balcony and a great little kitchen tucked away in the cupboard! It was spotless.
There was entertainment some evenings in the foyer bar, we didn't eat in the hotel but there seemed to be plenty of choice with 3 eateries on-site. My husband and I had a very relaxing stay. Would definitely stay again well worth the money!

Room Tip: They all have balcony or terrace. The back of the hotel is quieter as the front is on a busy road.

My Partner and I were looking at affordable holidays for the half term break, no kids but my Partner is a teacher. We were given a whole list of hotels by the agent but opted for the Solana. We were half board and I decided to pay extra (a lot) to have this hotel over others due to the previous trip advisor reviews.

On arriving at the hotel, I found that there was no place immediately by the hotel to park the hire car. I was advised that I could only park outside the hotel for 60 minutes and would then have to move to a side street. Not too much of a boar but also not clear on the hotel details. The hotel needs to make it clear that it does NOT have parking.

We then checked in and began the trail to our room in the "new" part of the building. Down in the lift two levels, a long walk through a commercial looking white and cold corridor, then into another lift to go back up one floor. I have to say carrying to suitcases and two hand luggage bags, I was not impressed. There was only one member of staff on reception and no offer of help.

We then walked into the room to find what can only be described as a clinical looking cell. The walls were white, ceiling white, floor a very light cream and all of the furniture a very light ivory colour. I then realised that we had no window save for a tiny window about 1ft high by about 5 ft long running along ceiling level of the room. We subsequently found out that the the window was on ground level of the road behind us.

I then went into the bathroom to find another window over the bath which was frosted out. I opened the window and to my shock, there was a massive dark basement with a drop. I was immediately freaked out and shut the window.

I immediately went to reception and asked to be moved. We were staying seven nights and there was no way we wanted to stay in that room for seven nights. I was told that the hotel was fully booked and we would have to stay in the room. I was told that I had requested a room without a balcony. I said that was ridiculous, I had requested a room with a sea view which they appeared to acknowledge so I am not sure why they would put us in a basement room even if they thought we didn't want a balcony.

It wasn't until the forth day when we were told a room had become available in the main hotel. We were shown the room and then advised that we would have to pay £15 per night to upgrade. We decided that as we only had a couple of days left, we would just stay put.

What was extremely frustrating was that when I got back to the room and looked at the rack rates on in the information bundle, the difference in the nightly cost of the room offered was only £2.60 and the hotel were trying to pull a fast one by charging us £15.

Food was generally very poor quality. A very small mix of the same food every single night. Pork, Chicken, Beef and Hake every night. My Partner is vegetarian and had almost nothing to eat.

The staff are generally pretty unhelpful.

Unless you specifically want to stay in Mellieha I would steer clear of this place.

If you do stay, I would suggest making sure that you are in the main block before paying. I can assure you, you will not be happy in the basement.

Room Tip: Only book in to the main building.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for sharing with us, your recent experience at the Solana Hotel & Spa and we very much regret that various aspects from your holiday experience have failed in meeting your expectations. Please rest assured that the Solana Hotel & Spa strives very hard to offer a quality holiday experience and we apologise if we have in any way hindered negatively your stay.

Where the room allocation is concerned, as explained during your stay, the booking has indeed reached us as one for a Non Balcony Unit and high levels of occupancy have made it difficult for the organisation to promptly offer the possibility of an upgrade to a different room type.

We do not consider it professional to publicly go into detail of each and every aspect mentioned in the review, however, as our esteemed client, you are very much encouraged to contact us directly to discuss this further, if this is deemed necessary.

While thanking you once again, we very much hope you will allow the Solana hotel & Spa a second opportunity in winning your trust during a future visit.

Best regards,

Elaine Cutajar Debono
