“Not a 4 star hotel, but ok”
Reviewed 20 August 2012

This hotel is not a 4 star. It maybe in the managements eyes, but anyone from the UK who has stayed in a 4 star hotel will know the difference.
1. They have a large group of students staying, when they leave another lot arrive, turning the hotel reception and dining areas into a youth hostel.
2. The sun loungers around the pool are always all reserved with towels by 8am. If there are any left they are then taken by the locals who come in 10 and 12 at a time. The hotel should have a strict policy about reserving sun loungers, and enforce it. We had to go out most days because of this.
3. The massage pump in the pool hardly works, its worn out and needs replacing.
4. No draft beer in a hotel this big is unheard of. Have to keep buying bottles or cans which is never like a cool draft beer. Again we went out to get this elsewhere. Also Cisk, there local beer is more expensive than Stella. Work that our?
5. There are many sat dishes and aerials on the roof, but you only get 1 tv channel worth watching in the room. I did retune the tv, but made no difference.
6. The flatscreen tv in the lobby is smaller than the tv in my bedroom at home. Its on a huge wall and looks daft. Why no 50" tv?
7. The meals are ok. Everyday its the same food, given different names and put with a different sauce. The bread is often stale. They give you the cheapest margarine they could buy, that tastes horrid. No butter!
8. The rooms are ok, they are beginning to look tired now. They all need new mattresses, showers, and decor. The A/C is noisey and leaks. They are very noisey at night, with doors slamming, peolpe shouting, chairs scraping and a fridge buzzing away like its going to take off.
9. There are many areas of this hotel that need fixing, like broken tiles, missing light fittings, broken lifts, etc. It feels like a penny pinching run hotel.
10. WIFI when we were there didnt work more often than not. Not good with 2 kids who want to talk to people back home. It took many hours to fix when it stopped. The network sockets in the room dont work and cant work according to reception staff. The onsite computer is powered by coal, and didnt work half the time either. You have to pay 2.50E to use it for half an hour. Why?Whoever looks after IT at the hotel wants to gets some training, or hire someone new.

I give up now, I could go on forever, but that would be unfair. It is a very clean average spec hotel. The staff are great and cant do enough for you. If you could only sort out the minor issues you really would have a fantasic 4 star hotel to be proud of. This is an honest view of my time at the Solana I have not made anything up or exaggerated. I am sure if you stay there you will see all my points raised.

We had a week here last week of July 2012. Melliaha Bay & Paradise Lido, 2 of the best beaches are easy to get to from the Solana and both offer reasonable umbrella & chaise-lounge and reasonable full service beach cafes. Avoid a room on the main street, extremely busy & noisy. Our room was in the adjoining annex at the rear. Large, refurbished in marble, great ensuite, very comfortable with a mini-fridge too, very quiet, nice. Superb choice for breakfast from full english to continental. Marvellous friendly staff who arranged our choice of side-trips, transfers etc. A short walk up the hill are several good restaurants; we liked the Hilltop & L`Escargot. Wide and varied menus, great food, friendly service & reasonably priced. Bottom Line on the Solano - great value hotel for the money.

Room Tip: Everywhere in Malta is busy and noisy. Solano location is no exception. The roads were built for hor...

just returned from a 10 day stay at this hotel and i have to say upon entering it looked fantastic we had to wait a couple of hours for a room t o be available but the nice cool air of the reception air con was perfect for us to chill out in. once our room was available we went to see what we were given bearing in mind id asked for a room at the back of the hotel and high up if possible but sadly no it was on the 1st floor and at the front and as there was 4 of us staying in there i had asked for a family room sadly again no the room was adequate enough for 2 at a push maybe 3 people.
we had to wait for the 4th bed to be brought in and then couldn't use the fridge or facilities as the bed was in the way.
went down to reception and told them it was not good enough only to be told there was nothing that could be done until morning.
after being up since 2am UK time we were all a little tied to say the least and though an early night would be good .... sadly this didn't happen as below my room in the cafe there was a live singer on until 11.30pm.
in the morning i went to reception and complained again and was told by Amanda that she had a different room for us and we could view it at 12pm ..... room much better and made for 4 people finally our family holiday could start ... thank you Amanda
room was serviced every day to a very good standard bins emptied towels changed etc etc

after that hiccup we had a great time although i would advise anyone who has trouble walking hill ... steep hills and stairs not to go tho this destination as EVERYWHERE you go Ur up hills and stairs
best places to eat for us were the 120 bar across the road and reflections restaurant a little walk up the hill and round the corner not a great selection of food but really tasty also a nice friendly bar called the cross keys
we didn't realize when we arrived that it was a week of festivals while we were there and i have to say some fantastic firework displays at night from each of the towns and city's we visited
it is also cheaper to pay on the bus for a ticket that it is to use the travel rep a little down the hill so grab a bus time table and work out where you want to go before booking anything as we decided to go to gozo for the day (lovely day out ) travel shop would have charged us 120 euro for transport (no ferry ticket though) we got our own transport (bus) and ferry ticket and hop on hop off round gozo for 80 euro.
there are also designated safe areas to swim in the sea around melleiha bay but get the bus back up the hill !!
all in all a great holiday for us as a family of 2 adults and 2 teenage boys and they only complained about the heat !!

Room Tip: one at the back of the hotel or high up and if you dont get it on arrival ask at the desk for a room...

We have just come back from a week at this hotel. The standard of the hotel, and room was exceptional. Always kept immaculately clean and (having visited in a heatwave) kept at a lovely cooling temperature. The room had everything we could have wanted. The food was plentiful, varied and we really couldn't have asked for more. Check in was easy, the reception staff were always extremely helpful, and i also feel i should mention our cleaner. He was unbelievable and even though i don't think we left our room untidy or dirty, he made it sparkle each time he had been in. The pool area is lovely and clean and there were plenty of seats and loungers, although it wasn't always easy to get loungers together. We were able to visit Valetta, St Pauls Bay, and Popeye Village. We spent our evenings after dinner at L'Escargot, a restaurant just up the hill on the right hand side. What a generously warm welcome we always had from the owners and staff. The most delicious and exceptional food was served there (ribs a speciality). If food is included in your hotel package (we were half board), go up for lunch. Between the hotel and L'Escargot we would definitely like to visit again

My partner and I stayed at the Solana at the end of June this year, for 7 days half board. Having read the reviews on here, we opted for the slightly better room (not the promo rate, which I believe gives you a room over the busy street at the front).

We were rewarded with a beautiful, modern room on the 4th floor with a small balcony, overlooking a patch of scrub land at the back. It appeared to be one of the self catering studios, but with the kitchenette cupboard locked up. It had 2 single beds made up as a superking double, with sofabed, table and chairs. Plenty of storage and hanging space, and a table and chairs on the balcony as well. The bathroom was a good size, and very well appointed. The (very welcome, as it was in the middle of a heat wave) air conditioning did go awry one night, but the hotel went to every length to ensure it was repaired the following day.

Food was very good, with themed and more general options every night. We didn't find it at all samey, but then we both eat most things, so where similar dishes appeared, there were always plenty of alternatives. Yes, they used meat and fish that was available locally, so things appeared more than once, but always cooked differently. Breakfast buffet too was pretty varied and plentiful.

We didn't try the spa (although it was tempting!), but both pools were lovely. The basement indoor pool room was quite hot and humid, but fine for swimming. The gym room off this looked well equipped. The rooftop pool and bar was our preferred one, although be sure to get up there early if you want a lounger. The hotel also runs a free shuttle bus down to Paradise Bay, first thing in the morning, picking up late afternoon.

Throughout, the hotel was really tastefully furnished, and the standard of cleanliness and repair was excellent. They pride themselves on customer service, and this was patently clear: unobtrusive but attentive wherever we were.

Mellieha itself is an interesting place, bustling and catering well for tourists, but having escaped the increasingly ubiquitous nightclubs, loud bars etc. Plenty of great looking eateries, bars etc if you want to eat out or fancy a stroll out for a beer in the evening. The Arriva bus service is brilliant for getting round the rest of the island, and there are bus stops very near the hotel wherever you want to go.

We're already planning our next trip!

Room Tip: Do go for a room away from the road; it costs very little extra and is worth it I would say.

We have just returned from a fortnight's holiday at Hotel Solana. We were warmly welcomed and delighted to find that some staff remembered us from a previous stay 18 months ago. The rooms are clean, well furnished and equipped with a useful mini kitchen.
There are plenty of sunbeds around the busy outdoor pool and the indoor pool is less busy for those serious about swimming.
All members of staff are polite and friendly and always willing to help. The two restaurants and cafeteria offer a good choice of food at reasonable cost.
There are plenty of amenities within the village and you can travel anywhere on the island by bus. We have already recommended this hotel to our friends.

This is a brilliant hotel. Check in was smooth and welcoming, the hotel spotlessly clean througout and the staff really friendly, professional and knowledgeable. Food was fantastic with lots of choice.

If visiting Malta, this hotel is a fantastic base for travelling around the island which was simple using the local bus service.

I would highly recomment the Solana - a great 4* hotel.
