“Another great holiday.”
Reviewed 16 April 2013

As the weather was so awful over the winter here in Scotland we decided to have a week's break away from it all. Our options were completely open regarding choice of venue but without too much thought we decided that for us there was no place better than our Maltese 'home from home'- the Solana in Melleiha. We've been there many times before but never at the beginning of March and we knew that we couldn't expect warm weather at that time of year. One thing we could rely on though was the warmth of the welcome we would get at the Solana and we weren't disappointed! As always we found the staff ( restaurant, reception and cafe bar)to be extremely friendly and helpful and eager to be of assistance in every way possible. We find the breakfast and evening menus to be excellent value and the new Tosca A la Carte restaurant is a superb addition to the hotel's faclities. The staff are friendly and attentive and the ambience is relaxed and welcoming. All in all we had a great week away from the cold and damp of home and we are looking forward to our next visit to the Solana in September and all the fun of festa time!!

Arrived at lunch time to find no towels in the room. Immediately asked reception to rectify this and left the hotel for a few hours expecting towels upon our return. There were none. Housekeeping couldn't find any! We had been travelling since 4.15am that morning and needed to freshen up before dinner. It was now 6.45pm and still no towels. Eventually a young chap arrived with 3 bath towels that had seen better days and said that was all the hotel had! Day 2...still no hand towels till after our return from a day out at 6pm . There is no parking anywhere near the hotel which is on the steepest part of the hill and you are asked to find parking behind the hotel or in near vicinity which is also on hills. Breakfast is adequate but bland. Staff tried to be helpful, but were obviously embarrassed. Any cups and glasses used by you in your room you are expected to wash and dry up yourself. The furniture and accessories are dated, dark and tired. It was, however, relatively clean apart from some mould issues on the curtains. The rooftop pool was not very clean and the steps slimy. This is NOT a 4* hotel by any means.

Dear Guest,

We are very saddened to read that difficulties encountered last weekend with our external laundry service provider have hindered the enjoyment of your brief sojourn with us. This situation arose following a mechanical malfunction and while many efforts were made to rectify the situation at the earliest possible, we evidently have not met your expectations.

Further to your feedback with regards to any housekeeping and maintenance matters arising, please rest assured that necessary departmental investigations have been made to avoid the re-occurance of any of the points mention.

While thanking you for taking the time in forwarding your feedback, we very much trust that this situation has not in any way hindered your overall experience in Malta and that you will still not hesitate in granting us a second opportuity where we can host you again in the future.

Yours sincerely,

Elaine Cutajar Debono

Chose this hotel as I had been in the area previously. Very comfortable accommodation, hotel exceptionally clean, every area. Only observation, the food in the hotel restaurant was very 'buffet', not very adventurous, limited main choice. We took option from half board to eat in their Italian restaurant - we could not recommend it highly enough, fantastic. Excellent food, service, atmosphere. Ate there 4 nights out of 7.
Plenty of other eating places locally though.
Made great use of island bus service, perfect way to get about and see the whole island.
Really enjoyed our stay, hotel staff were very friendly and welcoming! Thanks for a lovely stay.
Would recommend it.

Room Tip: May wish to select a rear room away from the street traffic.

I found it on trip advisor and have no complaints. Friendly staff, nothing was too much trouble, excellent value. Rooms spacious (although the sofa bed was a little uncomfortable due to springs). Free wifi is only available in the lounge/ lobby which means it can get very crowded in the evenings and could do with a few more chairs. Melieha is a charming little town, but don't go there if you want a bustling nightlife. It is tucked away a bit and takes about an hour on the bus to Valetta, but is perfect for the beaches and for Comino and Gozo. I was sorry to see no more old yellow buses, these were a feature of Malta, but the Ariiva buses are very efficient. get a weekly ticket for 12 Euros and travel anywhere. Don't bother with airport transfer, hop on the bus X1 this goes all the way to Melieha. The terminus (Belle Vue) looks like its in the middle of nowhere, get off there stay at the bus top and a local bus to Cirkewha will take you the three stops down the hill, the bus stop is opposite the hotel.

Excellent management is in evidence at this hotel, which should serve as a training hotel for the hospitality industry.
We found it to be very clean and marveled at the value for money.
The studio room we enjoyed was large, clean, nicely furnished, well lit with well thought out facilities.
Thank you to all the staff for your good-natured kindness.

The service was great with very nice and friendly staff. The room was quite spacious and comfortable with a good view of the beach. The food was delicious and had a lot of variety from where to choose from, that you'll get stuffed and still want more.

This is rated a 4*, but by UK / USA standards it is more like a 3*. That said, we were very pleased with it. There were a few bits of maintenance that need sorting, such as a broken ice box lid, a broken lock on the patio doors. Lighting is poor in the rooms for reading. Breakfast is excellent, with a big choice. Pack up breakfast was awful - no drink, butter but nothing to put it on, and limp lettuce in bland sandwiches. Lovely comfortable rooms, very pleasant reception area. Pools were good, although water too cold to swim in outdoors, and lighting very dim indoors. Our biggest problem was the noise from the live music every night. Not easy getting children to sleep. I also worried that the hotel was right by the road - I could just see a child running straight into the road. Hotel is a short bus ride from a decent beach.

Room Tip: Ask to be as far away from the music as possible - unless you want to join in, of course!
