We had a really great holiday in the Solana Hotel last week
The hotel is lovely - there is a big modern reception area which also serves as the main lounge,a well stocked bar,a coffee shop, cosy seating areas throughout the hotel, internet access, two restaurants, an outdoor pool with sunloungers, an indoor pool, a whirlpool and a gym. There is entertainment 3 nights a week - easy listening music which finishes about 10.30 pm. The entire hotel is cleaned from top to bottom every day - it is spotless. All the staff - cleaners, bar, restaurant and reception staff are always smiling helpful and polite
Our room ( Room 1302) was large ,clean, quiet, extremely comfortable and had good sized furnished balcony. We contacted the hotel in advance and arranged with a very helpful member of the reservations staff to upgrade to a "valley view " room in the main hotel. These rooms are the quietest and most easily accessible. Even though we paid to upgrade the room, it was still very reasonably priced and represented exceptional value for money. (Valley view rooms in the new Annex directly opposite appeared to be very good too and had the advantage of afternoon sun on the balconies but we preferred a room in the the main hotel for convenience)
We stayed on a half board basis. A recent review states that the breakfast was "quite standard". During our stay there was nothing at all standard about the buffet breakfast - it was lavish. It consisted of huge bowls of fresh fruit - grapes, melon, pineapple, orange, grapefruit. There were also bowls with baked apple and peaches in syrup. The hotel offered 4 different cereals as well as porridge. They also had 4 different types of ham, some cheeses and tomatoes and olives. There were 3 choices of delicious home made yogurt , home baked crusty bread, rolls and plain bread for toasting In addition there were fruit juices, bacon, sausages, egg, grilled tomatoes beans, varous cakes, pastries and home made jams.
Dinner which was also a buffet was first class with numerous courses and choices. A bottle of house wine with dinner cost 9.75 euro - again not expensive in a hotel of this quality.
We would highly recommend the Solana - it just cannot be beaten on service ,cleanliness, quality or price.

Room Tip: Let the Hotel reservation staff know your requirements and they will advise you on the best option for you.

The hotel has spacious rooms that are well kept. Cleaning and checkup every day. Rooms towards the main street are a bit noisy, and also the rooms with balconys to the inward atrium because of the ventilation machinery. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Breakfast buffet is very good, and the restaurant Tosca is an italian restaurant with a quality that you would have to look for in any main city in Europe. Busstop is right outside the hotel, and a dayticket is at present 2,60 euro. A trip to Valletta is about 35minutes away. Mellieha is the capital of the northern region, and is not as touristic as the Bugibba area. For bathing in the sea you have to take the bus down to Mellieha Bay. The town lies on a hill with quite steep streets. It is not a lively town with great nightlife, but the mainstreet has a good number of restaurants and shops.

The hotel has a nice location on the main street in Mellieha, close to the bus stops (buses to Valetta or Gozo). We went to Malta in the middle of April, so it was a bit to early to bath in the sea, so the distance to the beach didn't matter so much for us. But if you're planning beach vacation, I'd say look for something closer to the bay and sandy beaches. The room was really spacious, and we could see the cathedral and the bay from the balcony. It also had a small kitchenette with a stove, some dishes and a sink for doing them. However, we had some problem with the bathtub which was leaking, so it spoiled the impression a bit. Breakfast were quite standard: cereals, milk, yoghurts, bread, cheeses, hams, some fruit and pastries, oatmeals, scrambled eggs, some sausages. However, when it comes to drink, the tea selection was extremely poor - only black tea without any flavors, and they had ridiculously small glasses so water and juice were always spilling over, and the place looked messy. Both restaurant and reception personnel were kind of friendly but not very efficient or fast in doing their jobs.

This hotel is clean, modern, friendly and a good base for travelling around Malta. BUT I warn you DO NOT TAKE A ROOM ON THE FRONT. The noise is incredible and so called double glazing was ineffective. Malta has the noisiest buses in Europe and they stop in front of the hotel. We also were checked into a room that housekeeping had not been to, so had to have a temporary room for one night. There were holes in the pillow cases and one of our beds was broken..ALL the beds are noisey and you can feel the springs. The room we ended up with was for 2 whereas we booked one for 4. Although the staff were fine the concept of compensation for the inconvenience of moving rooms, did not seem to register. Arriving after a long days travel to find you have to wait until a suitable room is found, is not a good start.

Room Tip: Ask for the back of the hotel...not a great view but quieter.

We had a great time at the hotel. It was short way to the beach and with the bus stop outside the door it was short way to travel around on Malta and very short way to the the Gozo and Comino islands. The people who worked in the reception was very helpful and was easy to ask everything.

Room Tip: the rooms that are on the side to the main street is noisy.
