“An oasis of calm”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 June 2014

I had a week here at the beginning of June. The hotel is clean & spacious , with 3 pools - the outdoor facilities tend to be chilly!. We had room 202 which had a great view of both the pool area & the surrounding countryside. The bed was so large that the bedroom door could not be closed. The shower in the bathroom was powerful & hot water was always available. There was entertainment on a couple of nights- a solo singer & guitar which was very enjoyable. The cocktail menu was varied & reasonable. The breakfast was buffet style , self - service & provided for those wanting bot continental & "full English". A most pleasant stay with helpful staff on reception at all times

Room Tip: always ask for a sea view to ensure you have a good sunny outlook. We had room 202

Dear Guest,

Your review has really and truly left us speechless! It is such a great pleasure having you describe your experience as an 'oasis of calm'. We can somehow picture you sitting into your well appointed balcony at sunset, enjoying the panoramic views all the way across our sister islands of Comino and Gozo!

We very much hope this will not be your last stay with us and thank you so much for having chosen us in the first place.

Hotel was clean and modern in appearance with good facilities. Staff were polite and helpful.
The hotel is a big maze like with various floors and lifts, but, the directions to our room were clearly explained.
The only downside was our room, which had a small window which opened onto a ventilation shaft and a small glass brick window on the other side. This did make the room seem a little closed in. The room was described as a "Promo Superior Room", which judging by the hotels comments to other reviews is what we got. If we had had a room with a window / balcony / view, it would have been a much more pleasant stay.
The hotel was otherwise clean, had a lovely pool and the food and bar were good.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your constructive review; we appreciate the fact that you originally booked a promo room and that having read the replies we had previously submitted, you did not have any different expectations. Standard twin rooms are very similar to the room you were accommodated in from the interior, but yet feature a balcony or a small terrace.

Considering that you found the Pergola Club Hotel & Spa to be clean, with lovely pool amenities and good food and beverage services, we very much hope we will have the opportunity of welcoming you back on board some time in the future.

Yours sincerely,

The Pergola is a lovely hotel, it was clean and tidy, lots of facilities and the staff were helpful. We booked a standard twin room which was clean, comfortable and had a balcony. The pool areas are great, quite quiet when we visited and the pools themselves are very clean. The cave bar is lovely, especially in the evening with live music. Staff were helpful in assisting with directions, trips away and any other questions we had. Overall, we had a very good stay and would definitely return.

My stay in this hotel has been good, nothing makes it stand out exactly though. Decent quality room, attended daily, fridge in room in working order as is bathroom and the bed is comfy. My only gripe is inconciderent guests which has bearing on the quality of the hotel of course.

Just read Andy A review of the pergola and I agree with all he has said this is not even close to a four star hotel, it's an apart/hotel as the apartments looked so much better than the room we got, it had a window looking onto steps and a wall, the table top fridge was on the floor and we had to unplug this if we wanted a cup of tea,we asked for a room with view, pool or looking out, when we asked about this we were told that we had only booked a standard room but could upgrade for 14 euros a night, we also had family with us as we where attending a wedding, my son and his children where split up even though they booked for for rooms near one another the room my grandchildren (aged16 and21) had a window painted on the wall! No window in room they finished up paying 14euros a night to get them moved, our room was adjoining an apartment. The door in side the room was covered with curtain,THIS HOTEL if you can call it that must do a franchise with students as they seem to be better looked after. No bottle water machines anywhere in hotel. Apart from our cell block H hotel room it was clean one chair between the two of us and those horrible horrible shag pile rugs on floor. We would not recommend this hotel as when we wanted a drink in caves bar they had to go and get staff, everything is shut at eleven, food not bad but pictures don't show the real rooms my room was 100b

Room Tip: Make sure you view the ins and outs of this place as they tend to charge for everything, towels chan...

Dear Guest,

We are very sorry to hear of your disappointment during your family’s recent short break with us, however, as explained during the duration of your stay, your bookings were for Economy Standard Units, or otherwise known as Non Balcony or Promo Units. When such a unit type is booked in the first place, the hotel is not a position to grant complimentary upgrades honouring requests for views or otherwise, most particularly during the peak months.

The Economy Standard Rooms, a handful in number, are very typical standard twins, featuring a window over-looking internally, rather than a balcony. These units are mainly aimed for those guests travelling on a budget holiday or rather for those that intend to spend the majority of their holiday time enjoying what Malta has to offer, rather than spending time in their unit. We believe that we have clarified our position on these unit types on several occasions, but yet, for the benefit of our prospective Guests, we wish to remind everyone that we will be more than pleased to assist guests on the various room types on offer, prior to finalising their booking.

Where groups are concerned, our hotel has no agreement or otherwise with young students, however, indeed during the duration of your stay, we had a group of young people on a school field trip. Our Cave Bar is in fact open officially until 23:00hrs, however, as long as there remain guests at the bar, we continue to serve beverages as required.

We understand that this recent holiday experience, may have not been as pleasant as one would have expected it to be, however, while trusting you can accept our sincerest apologies for not having met your expectations, we very much hope that should your future holidays abroad bring you back to Malta, you will not hesitate to contact myself personally, where I will not only guide you on the unit type that best meets your expectations, but I will also ensure you will receive the quality service, we have long established ourselves for.

Yours sincerely,

Just returned from a weeks stay at the Pergolas and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We booked a sea view room and the view was truly amazing. The room was very clean and had everything we needed for our self catering stay. Previous reviews have complained about the hard mattress but it was fine for us and the sheets were changed every other day. There are quite a lot of stairs to get to the Main Street but if you use no 2 lift and press for level 7 it will take you to the bottom. All the staff were friendly and helpful and I hope to return again to this hotel.

Recently stayed at this hotel and I can definitely recommend to not stay there. Here are some salient points, about my stay and analysis:

Good:
1. Close to a bus stop, busses to Cirkawa/Valetta, every 15 mins (Beware, that buses are often full and then driver wont even stop the bus, so we had to sometimes wait upto 45 mins to get a bus)
2. The property was reasonably clean
3. Most receptionists (except one named "Pierre") were very helpful
4. Got a free hydrobath coupon, which was good in the hotel spa.

Bad:
1. The hotel has two kinds of room (old and outdated). The picture in the ad is of the newly furbished room and not the one we actually got (which looked like a cheap motel)
2. Air conditioning in the room failed to work. I have to call reception every night for 3 nights, to reset the air conditioning every night, but it didn't help.
3. The hotel is highly commercial and would charge you for quite a lot of services, such as travel adapters, or wifi.
4. You need to pay upto 12 EUR for 12 hrs internet in room (It's is free in lobby). Moreover, the wifi didn't work in our room (079).

Ugly:
1. The hotel is nowhere close to 4stars. Don't be fooled by the ratings

2. I specifically booked a double room, but was given a twin room. When I insisted that I booked a dobule room, the over smart alek receptionist named "Pierre" suggested that I complain to the booking service provider, because the the booking that they recevied, didn't say that it was a double room. Blatant white lier! The room booking clearly said DOUBLE POOL VIEW room, how much mroe clear could booking be? He over intelligently also suggested that I should have booked via Pergora and not via the booking agency (Travelrepublic), if I wanted double room. He was perhaps the only rude and careless of about 5-6 receptionists, whom I met during my 3 days stay.

3. However, the receptionist named "Sarah" acknowledged the problem and managed to get the staff to some how put a thin double bed mattress to give it an impression of double bed, which wasn't comfy at all.

4. The bed and the room are in bad shape and definitely require a makeover

5. I also specifically requested to put me in refurbished room and not the older one (in the booking made 3 weeks ago, prior to arrival), but the hotel failed to honour it. When I insisted and showed them the booking voucher, they wanted 35 EUR cleaning fee for the older room, which I never wanted at the first place and pointed out immediately to the staff upon check-in. But the receptionist said that no rooms are available! Yeah right!

6. Lastly, the hotel restaurant and bars close at 11pm and if you plan to arrive after that time, make sure that you have some drinking water with you from somewhere. The so called 4 star hotel doesn't even have drinking water in the room or even to buy outside the restaurant hours. I arrived pretty thirsty in hot month of June and had to eventually goto a pub near the main street to buy something to drink and get some water.

Please note that tap water is not drinkable in Malta & the 4* star hotel didn't even kept a bottle or jug of water in the room!

Would personally never stay there again and recommend others to be beware.

Room Tip: 1. Dont choose room close to noisy & old elevators 2. Insist and confirm that you will get into...

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your extensive review detailing the pros and cons of your recent experience at our hotel. We very highly regret that your stay with us did not meet your expectations and while assuring you that we highly appreciate all forms of constructive criticism, we very much wish to further clarify a number of aspects mentioned.

The Pergola Club Hotel & Spa, indeed has had its soft furnishings upgraded for half of its standard twin room inventory, over the last few months, but yet we have ensured, that our own website, continues to feature the photos of the standard twin rooms bearing the old soft furnishings, so that in no way will we disappoint any of our esteemed guests. Regretfully requests similar to yours cannot be honoured, simply because when occupancies are at their peak, it is not possible to allocate room inventory according to personal requests but one needs to adhere to contractual obligations, for each and every booking received.

Wi-Fi is available for free in the majority of public areas including at the main reception lobby, at the Cave Bar and at Da Ciccio Cucina. Our Cave Bar is officially open until 23:00hrs, however, when guests are still present within the venue, we never hesitate to extend its opening hours, accordingly. Water in Malta is potable, however, considering that it is mainly derived through desalination plants, its taste may not be as pleasant as that in countries where fresh water is a natural resource. Nonetheless, for any late arrivals we do not only keep a stock of mineral water at front desk but also give the opportunity to future guests to order food packs or meal platters, ahead of their arrival.

While trusting that the above has further clarified what has already been explained to you by both our Rooms Division Manager and our Duty Manager, while you were in-house, we remain

Yours sincerely,

Elaine Cutajar Debono
