“Good but could be great with more effort”
Reviewed 1 May 2009

The Pergola Spa Hotel has a lot of good things going for it. Location is excellent in the small resort of Mellieha. A short walk down steep steps to the main street, which has a number of good restaurants and bars, and only a 15 minute walk from the bay (although it is down a big hill so beware if you are fat or lazy!). Also close to the bus stop so all Malta towns and sights are easily accesible. There are some fantastic views of the Bay and Comino and Gozo from the hotel.

The Pergola has 2 outdoor swimming pools and a very nice heated indoor pool with Jacussi. The Cave Bar by the main outdoor swimming pool is good (when they bother to open and serve you!). Breakfast was fine although we didn't eat lunch or dinner in the restaurant.

There is also a Spa (over-priced), gym (which looks great from the outside but most of the equipment is broken!), games room, child's play area, and bar (which unfortunately stinks of egg).

The only grumble for us (apart from the eggy bar and run down gym) was that we drew the short straw on the room and had to share a tiny balcony with no view with a smoking couple next door (avoid room 81B!). I think this is the only room with a shared balcony. We asked twice to be moved but were fobbed off and told there was nothing else available despite the hotel being practically deserted! We didn't let it ruin our holiday but did look on envioulsy at couples able to sit on their balcony in the evening with the great views over the Bay.

All in all we were very happy with the hotel but it could do with a re-furb and a bit more effort from the staff to keep customers happy.

This hotel could be so much better. It is actually ok but they could do much more. We arrived at 13:15 and were told our Room would be ready at 14:00. We went for a walk and returned 13:50 and again I was told ready at 14:00. At 14:01 we were told your Room is ready!!! I cannot believe the Maids work to such a strict timetable.

Don't stay in an internal room. No window, no daylight, no view, AWFUL. There was a little window which looke into a shaft of some sort. The Room could be so much better also. There is a tiny TV at the far end of the room which you can hardly see. Our room was a good size but no seating area to enjoy. It was very uncomfortable. The main plusof the location is it is near a bus stop.
There was a nice restaurant next door, linked to the hotel which was only open one day so we ended up eating at another hotels restaurant down the road. I do not have the time to go on any more!!
Overall very disapointing.

We booked a last minute deal at this supposedly four-star hotel at the end of February. Having looked at other tripadvisor reviews before we booked, we were really looking forward to a good quality and good value break. However, the day before my wife looked at the reviews again and noted how one very recent review was really bad... that was just the start!

The hotel is split over several buildings, on a hill and separated by a large flight of steps. Some lifts worked on ascending order, and others descending. Our room - an apartment although we'd booked B&B - involved going down to floor 6, going through the tunnel, and going back up to floor 3.

On entering the room, the smell hit you. It had clearly not been used/aired for a while, and was very cold. The 'air-con' in the room was supposed to work as a heater too, but try as we might it would only blow cold air. We reported this to reception (Sat eve) and were promised that it would be fixed. By the time we arrived back from our evening meal that night, it had not been fixed, and we had to resort to using very smelly and fusty blankets on our beds.

On the Sunday, we phoned/visited reception a couple of times to ask for help. Help was promised - none was forthcoming. We went to bed on the Sunday night, freezing and very angry - suspecting that this fobbing off would continue.

On the Monday, I visited reception in person no less than 6 times for help. In the end, we asked to be moved immediately. Hey presto - 30 minutes later the very same receptionist delivers an electric heater to our room. We ended up leaving our tesco clubcard in the card socket so that we could leave the heater on to warm up the room while we went for something to eat.

On the Monday evening, we were invited to a welcome talk with Lilian. We were surprised that this seemingly terrible hotel would do such a thing - but, being the eternal optimists, thought we'd give it a go. Actually, Lilian was very helpful - giving us maps, explaining good places to visit, restaurants etc. At the end of the talk she explained that the hotel owners had just opened a new hotel, and if we were prepared to spend an hour of our time having a look round and telling them our views we would be paid €30.

At that point we suspected timeshare - but we were quite happy to spend an hour looking round if it was going to pay for dinner that night! We arranged for Wednesday morning...

On the Wednesday, after we had come to the conclusion that we were not enjoying our holiday at all, and would happily have gone home, we went to see the Solana - not brand new, but actually 5 years old. We sat through an hour's talk from Iain - at which point it became extremely apparent that no-one with any sense would ever consider joining the scheme. To top it off, the other places you could trade yours in for included the Pergola - no way would we trust anyone selling that place as a four-star hotel!!!

We did look round the Solana - and were actually much more impressed. So impressed that when we were given our €30 we went straight back to reception and asked how much it would be to move their for the last three nights of our stay. Guess what? €30! Perfect - we moved that morning.

In essence though, the Pergola seems to get mixed reviews. If you're placed in the annex though, be afraid! And don't forget - take the €30 and move!

We booked a 'last minute' deal from Scotland to Malta and our agent recommended the Pergola Club Hotel. At first we were quite disappointed by the reviews that we read on this hotel over the internet but this changed when we arrived at the Hotel.

Our luggages got lost by the airline but the reception staff were so welcoming and so helpful. They immediately got in contact with the airport and indeed a few hours later our luggages was delivered to us at the Hotel!

The Hotel is located on a hill and just away from the centre of the village but yet close to shops and restaurants. The cleanliness of the hotel is superb and cannot be faulted anywhere. The restaurant staff was excellent. Andre and his colleagues simply start off your day with a huge smile on your face!

Tony, Johnniee and Ernest are really good entertainers and we enjoyed hearing them! The interaction was suberb....that's what we call a holiday!

Good service, good food and superb VALUE!!! What else do you need?!?!

I spent one night at the "Pergola" on a business trip. The hotel is located in a quite area of the island, advisable only if you are renting a car, not very touristy. The check in was smooth. Locating the room is a difficult job, the hotel layout is on different "towers" connected by corridors, and one needs to take different elevators to get to the rooms. The room was comfortable but extremely cold, there was no heating, only air conditioning. There is no internet connection in the rooms. Breakfast was average, the breakfast room was small and crowded and the food not very enticing. The staff appeared to be rather "depressed", I asked for a late check out (30 mns) which was unavailable... and the info was delivered without grace....
Certainly not a 4 star hotel, and not in the best part of the island, not sure about value for money.

Further to a great experience at the Solana Hotel over Christmas period, we decided it was due time for another short break and since Solana Hotel was closed, we opted for the Pergola since we knew that this hotel was run by the same company. We have no regrets, as yet again the team at Pergola exceeded our expectations and we had a wonderful 4 days over Carnival long weekend.

This time we booked a one bedroom unit on half board basis. The apartment was not seaview, yet we were not dissappointed as it was nicely furnished with lots of space and spotlessly clean. Contrary to what other reviewers mentioned, we found the heating to be sufficient and we were very comfortable. Food was very good and even the service was spot on. We thoroughly enjoyed Saturday Night with Tony Camilleri and his music (Tony Camilleri is very popular with us Maltese, loved every bit of his entertainment).

My husband treated us to an Apollo & Athena at the Spa. This was an amazing experience and really & truly relaxing. Front Desk arranged the services of a child minder for us whilst we were at the spa so our minds were completely at rest & we could enjoy the treatment.

Mellieha is a very nice village and now that our family experienced the Pergola too, we are going to find it hard to choose between Solana & Pergola, yet one thing is for certain, we are planning our next break at Easter holidays and it will surely be at either of these two hotels.
