The Ta Cenc hotel is a good quality 5 star hotel. Staff is variable - some are quite morose and unhelpful, others the exact opposite and very friendly.
The hotel is built as though its a small village, using the local stone and creating a very atmospheric, accessible feeling. Its well done and creates a good balance between new/quality and old/characteristic.
We had a nice room looking out on the pool furthest from the bar/dining area. Small patio out back (poolside) with two chairs and low table. No view but nice to sit for after dinner drink before going to bed.
In general a good size room, bathroom had shower over the bath, but apart from the water from the shower running over the bath onto the floor and there not being a fan or possibility to open a window to let out the steam, the bathroom was modern and good quality.
The bed was a good size double, though turned out to be two separate beds pushed together to make a double. This meant that you could clearly feel the mattress ridges and made it a bit uncomfortable to sleep in the middle/together.
Room was kept clean enough, no issues there unlike some of the other reviewers.
The rooms are quite soundproof though nothing could have stopped the noise of the TV and (phone) conversations of the apparently very deaf Maltese couple next door. We could even hear the caller's side of the conversations...
'Our' pool was very nice, spacious set-up with enough sun beds and umbrellas around and if you stood up you had a nice view over the rustic/natural Ta Cenc area with Xewlija in the distance.
The other pool near the bar is smaller and has less space around it, so people coming and going pass quite close making it a bit less relaxing.
The spa area has its own small inside/outside pool and jacuzzi with a small private area for a couple of sun beds. Looked nice enough though we didnt make use of it.
We ate dinner at the hotel once and can absolutely recommend it. Very tasty and good value (30 euros for 3 courses).
The breakfast was great! Extremely wide range of food from fresh eggs (made to order or scrambled pre-prepared), full English breakfast, lots of savoury and sweet pastries, different (high quality) breads, toast, yoghurts, mueslis, fresh fruits, 3-4 cakes etc. If you come very late to breakfast though, they run out of some of the food. And depending on who is on duty, they can start clearing it away at 10.30 on the dot.
They have a separate restaurant on a lovely cove just 2,5km past the hotel, overlooking a small rock/island. Its very privately set up, great views over sea and accessible for everyone, not just for guests.
There's sunbeds and umbrellas you can use (they didn't charge us, but that could be because we had the pool towels from the hotel so they saw we were guests).
There's steps down to the water (very clear, but too deep to stand) and you can swim, snorkel and dive right there. Just around the corner (10minute swim away) is a slightly larger cove thats has a small rocky beach and in which boats can anchor.
In my opinion its one of the nicest coves/spots on the island!!
They do lunch and dinner there though we didn't get round to doing that.
We were very late for lunch once and the kitchen was closed, but the very friendly waiter brought us bread, olives and cheese and it was perfect.
