“Lovely hotel & bay”
Reviewed 8 October 2013

The Ta Cenc hotel is a good quality 5 star hotel. Staff is variable - some are quite morose and unhelpful, others the exact opposite and very friendly.
The hotel is built as though its a small village, using the local stone and creating a very atmospheric, accessible feeling. Its well done and creates a good balance between new/quality and old/characteristic.

We had a nice room looking out on the pool furthest from the bar/dining area. Small patio out back (poolside) with two chairs and low table. No view but nice to sit for after dinner drink before going to bed.
In general a good size room, bathroom had shower over the bath, but apart from the water from the shower running over the bath onto the floor and there not being a fan or possibility to open a window to let out the steam, the bathroom was modern and good quality.
The bed was a good size double, though turned out to be two separate beds pushed together to make a double. This meant that you could clearly feel the mattress ridges and made it a bit uncomfortable to sleep in the middle/together.
Room was kept clean enough, no issues there unlike some of the other reviewers.
The rooms are quite soundproof though nothing could have stopped the noise of the TV and (phone) conversations of the apparently very deaf Maltese couple next door. We could even hear the caller's side of the conversations...

'Our' pool was very nice, spacious set-up with enough sun beds and umbrellas around and if you stood up you had a nice view over the rustic/natural Ta Cenc area with Xewlija in the distance.

The other pool near the bar is smaller and has less space around it, so people coming and going pass quite close making it a bit less relaxing.

The spa area has its own small inside/outside pool and jacuzzi with a small private area for a couple of sun beds. Looked nice enough though we didnt make use of it.

We ate dinner at the hotel once and can absolutely recommend it. Very tasty and good value (30 euros for 3 courses).

The breakfast was great! Extremely wide range of food from fresh eggs (made to order or scrambled pre-prepared), full English breakfast, lots of savoury and sweet pastries, different (high quality) breads, toast, yoghurts, mueslis, fresh fruits, 3-4 cakes etc. If you come very late to breakfast though, they run out of some of the food. And depending on who is on duty, they can start clearing it away at 10.30 on the dot.

They have a separate restaurant on a lovely cove just 2,5km past the hotel, overlooking a small rock/island. Its very privately set up, great views over sea and accessible for everyone, not just for guests.
There's sunbeds and umbrellas you can use (they didn't charge us, but that could be because we had the pool towels from the hotel so they saw we were guests).
There's steps down to the water (very clear, but too deep to stand) and you can swim, snorkel and dive right there. Just around the corner (10minute swim away) is a slightly larger cove thats has a small rocky beach and in which boats can anchor.

In my opinion its one of the nicest coves/spots on the island!!

They do lunch and dinner there though we didn't get round to doing that.
We were very late for lunch once and the kitchen was closed, but the very friendly waiter brought us bread, olives and cheese and it was perfect.

Room Tip: We had a standard room on the far pool which didn't have a view of anything but was fine for us...

Overall it was ok.. We were slightly disappointed with the condition of the room. One would expect a much cleaner, up to date environment for a five star hotel. It was not as clean as a five star hotel should be, the couch had stains all over and the room smelled like it has not been opened in a while. The floors did not look like they had just been washed just before we arrived, in fact it looked like the floors had not been washed for a while. The bathroom was really nice though even the bedroom, at least the sheets looked clean. The breakfast was quite good as well. It's an ideal place for a quiet vacation but not five star quality.

Was greeted by lovely staff that checked us in and took our luggage to our room. The rooms are like semidetached mini villas, just great, everything clean and all you could need. The bathroom was spacious with a shower and a hydro massage bath tub, his and hers sink etc. There are 3 pools, the family pool, the adults pool and a half indoor half outdoor spa pool. The spa pool was beautiful, see pics. All facilities available and staff is very helpful and polite. The restaurant was very professional and the food was average. Alternatively you're staying in Gozo, just go around, there are so many great restaurants to visit.

Room Tip: Make sure your room has a hydro massage bath tub.

This is the hotel for perfect relaxation, where you can find a room with seaview and a sun-terrace situated undisturbed with no neighbours looking at you or making noise around or passing by all the time. This is so rare that I can call this hotel a hideaway embedded in a large flower garden. There are 2 pools, one of them is for families with children, the second one - for adults, the hotels spa has a pool also. The outdoor part of the restaurant is placed under the gigantic tree, giving the shade in sunny days, meals from a-la-carte menu are wonderfully tasty and very large, meals from menu of the day are not so large. Breakfast is the best we´ve got during our trip through Malta and Gozo, with best ham and best eggs and fantastic fruits.
Ta´ Cenc Heritage features include Borg i-Imramma temples, Dolmen, Cart ruts, other megaliths and must be seen for the historical value and a beauty of the nature (map is available in the reception). A promenade towards and along Cliffs was our best outdoor experience on Gozo, views are unexpected and amazing, the must see when in Gozo.
The hotel also has a private rocky beach behind the cliffs, with sunbeds, umbrellas and a restaurant with a sea-view, the distance is about 1,5 km from hotel. There is a courtesy bus connection to and from the beach and to and from capital Victoria / Rabat, 2 times a day each. There is also a small shop in the hotel selling souvenirs, postcards and newspapers, open mornings and afternoons.
In my opinion, to see Gozo properly, one needs to see hotel Ta`Cenc and surroundings.
I should say that to see Gozo properly, one needs to see the hotel Ta`Cenc and its surroundings.

My husband and I have just arrived back from our weeks holiday at Ta' Cenc and we have already booked to return next year for 10 days. This hotel is truly unique. The setting and relaxed atmosphere are second to none. A tranquil oasis away from the stress of every day life, And an excellent base for exploring Gozo and Malta. Our Trullo suite was lovely, spacious, clean and tastefully furnished. Breakfast was varied and delicious. All staff were helpful and friendly. We would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for laid back luxury. Our holiday was all we could have wished for and more.

We have just returned from spending ten wonderful days at the Ta Cenc Hotel, the staff could not do enough to help you, the room was perfect, we had a suite. The food was excellent, more than enough, and very good quality. The service provided to take you to Victoria and the beach was very good. All in all a wonderful experience and look forward to returning again soon.

We spent one night here in August with two other families. The room was perfect and at last a room that could accommodate 3 children. The staff were very polite and extremely helpful. We did not eat here, apart from a delicious breakfast buffet, but had drinks and snacks, which each time were delivered to us by the pool by a delightful member of staff. The only thing to bear in mind is, if you're expecting a 5 star hotel like you would find in Paris, London, Istanbul you'll be disappointed, this is Maltese 5star which is more like 4 star.
