“Lovely hotel”
Reviewed 23 November 2013

Spent a week at this hotel and was very impressed. Thanks to other reviewers' recommendations, we booked a junior suite and requested high floor with pool view. Our requests were adhered to and the suite was very spacious with balcony, large bathroom and a general feeling of spaciousness. The one aspect of this hotel that really impressed me was the friendly, helpful attitude of the staff. Without exception, they made us feel welcome and that nothing was too much trouble, quite a feat even at 5 star level. I also enjoyed the wonderful spa facilities. The hotel is situated in a very quiet village but that was exactly what we wanted. The island is very small and we opted on a few nights to book a taxi to take us to different restaurants and that worked very well. If I return to Gozo I will definitely book this hotel again so I guess that says it all.

Room Tip: request a pool view and high floor, this will allow you to enjoy the afternoon sun

Stayed here for 2 nights on my trip around Malta. Hotel itself resembles pseudo Pousada but still nice. Swimming pool area and the garden are good place to relax since it is far away to the nearest beach. Great place as a starting point for sightseeing in Gozo. There are 2 restaurants nearby ~ 10min walking time. One is Mediterranean by the San Lawrenz Dome and the other one is english pub style, but food is very good. Ask at the reception for the names and directions.
The Azure window is 10min by car.
Rents a taxi with a driver for the whole day and you can see all the places within one day. Victoria is a must! Costs around 50EUR for the whole day.

Stayed at the Kempinski whilst attending a wedding on Gozo. Great hotel - the rooms were very large, clean and comfortable. The facilities were excellent - outdoor pools, indoor pool, hammam, spa, etc. The food was very good value, well cooked and well presented. Breakfasts were tasty, with a wide variety of food.

The staff on reception were excellent and extraordinary helpful when required. The other staff were friendly and helpful, although it must be said that the bar staff were occasionally very slow in their service and on a couple of occasions forgot to deliver the order However, as everything was so perfect and worth a 6 star rating, I feel this issue is easy to forgive and forget.

Finally the price was more than reasonable considering the quality of the hotel.

We visitied the hotel for the second time and we just could not get enough of it. Its surroundings are breathtaking and for an ultimate relaxing weekend the hotel is truly a sensational hotel to visit whatever the weather. Would never mind staying at the hotel over and over again!

Truly a charm in Gozo.

Fully recommend.

Room Tip: any room is fantastic.

We visiting this place for a long weekend break in November. Here is a run down of the good and the bad:

The good:
1. We were given a free room upgrade from Junior suite overlooking the pool to a Junior Deluxe suite overlooking the pool. The suites are very large and spacious, and the deluxe room has a private jacuzzi bath, which was nice.

2. Great base from where to explore Gozo, but more so if you want to indulge yourselves at the facilities: 2 beautiful outdoor pools, 1 separate outdoor family pool (with shallow kids area), 2 indoor heated pools, 1 indoor jacuzzi bath, 1 hammam (Oriental steam room, original marble from top to bottom, very nice), kids club, and many spa services (massage, etc, you pay for, the use of other facilities all free for guests).

3. Lovely staff. Nothing is too much trouble if you ask. Extra harder pillows, extra cups, bath salts for the jacuzzi bath, all come swiftly. Nice little touches, like free daily newspaper delivered to your room, free bottles of water for the night, and welcome sweets on the first day add to the magic.

4. Breakfast. A 5 star breakfast. Custom made omelletes as you like them, cheeses, Gozitan goat cheese, Maltese pastizzi, smoked salmon, cakes, puddings etc.

5. Free wifi in room and around facilities. Great to keep in touch with family, friends and facebook.

6. The hotel always feels spacious and never crammed, even though this was a very busy weekend, with lots of kids due to school mid term break.

The bad:

The beds. The mattresses are old, thin and uncomfortable. Both on the main bed, and the kid's sofa bed (the latter literally sagged in the middle, making both kids roll onto each other during the night and complaining that they could not sleep - something I have never heard them do since they were born!). It is also a pity because today, both in Malta and in Europe, many hotels make it a point to promote heavenly beds and pillows.

The breakfast. The sausages are very poor quality and stand out from the rest of the fare. The juices are from concentrate. Usually one would find at least some fresh juices, for example orange. At the best 5 star hotels in Malta, one can also find spumante for an early morning bucks fizz, if you are so inclined.

The wifi was erratic, its free, so I cant really complain, but at times it disappeared. This was mentioned in another review, but has not yet been fixed. I suspect that their routers reach maximum capacity when everyone is trying to connect. When it is working, it is quite good, and I clocked 1.5 mega bits of download speed.

Overall a great hotel, it needs some attention in places, and it would then be outstanding.

We had a very relaxing long weekend at the Kempinski. As usual, service was flawless. A great place to get away from it all. Unfortunately, the spa was a bit noisy, mainly because it was a bit overcrowded. Would have appreciated if other residents recognise the fact that it was a relaxing area.

Have just returned from 1 week here. We booked a pool view room and were given a junior suite. We think it was worth booking the pool view room rather than the countryside one, perhaps especially at this time of year when the countryside is dry and scrubby looking rather than green.

We arrived at 1am, having had smooth transfers by car, ferry and minibus from the airport. Check in very pleasant and efficient.

Very spacious cool room (401) with lots of storage space. Large ensuite bathroom, 4 piece suite with overbath shower. Ample supplies of toiletries etc. Room serviced twice a day; no problems with interruptions as per another review. Very large, comfortable bed. Separate sitting area with flat screem TV, coffee making facilities and mini bar. Good sized balcony with pool view and comfortable chairs. No flies in the room and few on the balcony; anti midge spray soon cleared these. Only one night did we have a problem with noise - we were woken twice by the the TV on in the next room - sounded like a very noisy film - so sound proofing is not ideal.

Breakfasts were excellent - huge range of healthy and not so healthy items. Chef on hand to cook omlettes etc to order. Staff all very pleasant and helpful. Main problem was the flies. Apparently these are always a problem at this time of year. Nothing seems to be done to deter them; "you can't control them" was the response a couple of times. Perhaps mosquito coils, citronella or a mechanical device would improve matters. In the last few days we resorted to eating inside away from the window and this was OK but not as special as eating outside.

Dinner on offer in the main dining room was expensive so we mainly ate away from the hotel. We did have a burger and another cafe style meal on the balcony one evening. The burger was very tasty but only warm. The potato wedges with the other meal were not fully cooked and had to be returned. Teas / coffees / lattes/ hot chocolate were warm rather than hot on a number of occasions and we did supply feedback on these. Not expected in a 5* hotel. We had a good off season deal but if we had paid the full rate we would have been rather disappointed with this aspect.

The pools and garden area are lovely and we also enjoyed the indoor pool and used the gym. The Spa / Hamman facilities look exceptionally luxurious; with prices to match we did not partake of the treatments.

There is a bus stop at the Craft Village (worth a visit) just outside the hotel. The Arriva bus service is very good. Bus Station in Victoria is just about 5 minutes journey away and from here buses radiate out to most parts of the island. Unlike Jersey there are not many buses going around the coast and you usually have to go back to Victoria to go to another location. The 7 day ticket at 12 euros is very good value. The buses are new looking, clean and usually ran to time. There is speculation in the press that Arriva will pull out of the Maltese Islands so this may not last. Our car driver informed us that the bus service on Malta itself is not so good. Fellow guests said it took 1 1/2 hours by bus from the ferry to Valetta. Better option is probably to hire a car and driver for the day. Traffic congestion on Malta is fairly bad so local info would be invaluable. We opted just to stay on Gozo for the week, missing the many historical places of interest but we were there for a rest.

There are no banking facilities in San Lawrenz, you need to go to Victoria for this. The Hotel runs a twice daily minibus to Victoria. There is one mini market 5 mins walk from the hotel (past the Craft Village), and we found one good restaurant - Jeffrey's - just past it. Check out Trip Advisors Restaurant reviews before you go. I had not printed these out and we had a few not so good experiences in cafes / restaurants.

We had good short boat trips at the Inland Sea and at Xlendi. Seems a good place for divers.

Overall we had a very good holiday and enjoyed the hotel and our time on Gozo, which probably looks more attractive when the countryside is greener after the rains. Local people are friendly and helpful and customer service mainly good.

Room Tip: 4th floor is one level above the pool area and level with the dining room / terrace. 401 is closest...
