“great getaway ro explore jungle & river”
Reviewed 13 September 2013

This lodge is about am hours´ boat ride from Sandakan & is one of the newest lodges on the Kinabatangan River. It consists of 18 stilted wooden chalets that are comfy, clean & well maintained. The lodge is run by a generator rather than mains electric. The restaurant is simple & serves local fare which is enjoyable & tasty. The staff are very friendly & helpful. The water in the bathroom is perhaps less pressure & warmth than can be normally expected but is sufficient to leave you clean & refreshed. The public areas are comfortable with lovely views over Kinabatangan River. Ideal for a couple of nights stay to explore the Kinabatangan River.

The lodge is basic but comfortable. The shower is hot and the waterpressure is good. It's clean and although in the jungle there are no bugs in the room. Food is of good quality. Breakfast is served in the jungle and despite of the temperature what needs to be cold is cold.

Staff is very friendly and takes time to point out the different animals. The nighttour and the boattours are very nice and the guide told us a lot about all the different animals. The visit to 'Starbucks' on the river was great. We had coffee while watching the sunset.

Although this was a not the cheapest option when visiting the Kinabatangan region, it certainly paid off in terms of service, comfort and feeling looked after by a host of tour guides.

Given plenty of time at Sepilok, not rushed, and our guide ensured we got a good spot for watching the Orangutan feeding. He was also vigilant and informed about wildlife, making sure we saw everything that was about! On this day only 6 people in our group, so felt quite personalised.

Transfers were seamless.

The lodge chalets are comfortable, clean and relatively bug free, given its location in a rainforest. Food was of a good quality, with plenty of it. Breakfast in the jungle was a high point.

The river tours were really good. Guides offered binoculars, (not that they were really needed) and a wealth of wildlife. We'd heard that it was busy in the river tours, but there were no more than 25 of us in different boats, so it never felt crowded.

If you had a particular interest in spiders, snakes, birds etc the guides went out of their way to personalise the tour to your needs. On the night tour, mentioned that my wife really didn't like spiders, so our guide kindly avoided them, waiting til she'd passed before pointing them out to others.

We booked through SI tours, and very glad that we did so, as from first email, they were helpful and attentive. We have travelled a lot around south east Asia and this WAS a particular highlight.

Only stayed for one day but was very happy with the lodge and it's surroundings. The room was clean and well matained (no air con but ceiling fan was adequate). Enjoyed the boat trips saw lots of monkeys (proboscis and macaques), a few snakes, various types of kingfishers, eagles, hummingbirds, hornbills, croodiles and lizards. Tour guides were very good and well informed. I also stayed at Abai's sister lodge further up river the Kinabatangan Lodge which was also very good, similar to Abai's with good, clean rooms (again no a/c). Saw plenty of wildlife again on the river trips. Staff friendly, the food was good, a lot of it is cooked in oil which if it's something your not used to you may not like. The main alcohol you can get is beer, wine is available but is expensive. Overall very happy with stay.

This place was amazing, deep in the jungle and beautiful surroundings! Went on lots of river cruises and were very lucky...saw proboscis monkeys, macaques and even a crocodile! The food was great and service was incredible...everything was so well organised and staff were all friendly! Admittedly it was very humid and no ac but this did not distract from the experience, would definitely recommend the lodge!

We had 2 nights here, with plenty of guided boat trips, both early in the morning and late in the evening to see the fireflies . We were very excited to spot a wild orangutan in the trees and watched it for ages from the boat. Probably not as many birds as we would have expected but lots of close up views of monkeys, especially the proboscis monkey. Rooms were ok, 3 rooms to every chalet with benches and a hammock outside. We had asked for a double and got a twin - after asking if we could be moved to a double we got moved later that evening- that was a really good move as these rooms were much larger, newer and smarter. Not sure if you were supposed to pay more for them but rooms 21 onwards are the ones to have. All the staff really helpful and friendly, food good and plenty of it, lunch in the village just involved them taking lunch over and eating in a covered area by the village so definitely didn't experience any of village life. The last morning we saw an orangutan from along the boardwalk that surrounds the lodge - that was really special. No AC , was fine at night but hot in the day, only cool place was to lie outside the rooms under the fans but not much use if the other guests in the other chalet rooms had beaten you to the hammock or benches

Room Tip: Room 21 to 26 bigger and newer

This place is amazing. In the middle of nowhere carved out of (or perhaps more accurately into) the rainforest, it is a wildlife watchers dream. Undoubtedly the best place we stayed in Borneo for location and atmosphere. Went there as part of a trip up the Kinabatangan River organised through Borneo Adventure Tours. Only regret, having one night here and two further up the river at Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge - nice but not in the same league. Stay two nights or more here and you won't regret it.
