“So much for roughing it!!!”
Reviewed 25 July 2014

After reading several reviews I had prepared the teenagers for "roughing it". We did the 4 day 3 night tour with SI Tours which included one night at turtle island(separate review) and 2 nights at Abai jungle lodge. We had an amazing time I loved the rustic feel of the rooms and the wildlife noises that surrounded us. Our family of four was provided with our very own guide, who was attentive and could spot wildlife miles away. We saw snakes and 3 varieties of monkeys and on our last river cruise we spotted a mother and baby orang-utan. Our morning cruise had a special touch as we stopped for tea and coffee in a lovely tranquil area surrounded by lily's, we also visited a local village and planted a tree to replenish a part of the damaged rainforest. The traditional Malaysian food was fantastic and yummy banana fritters for afternoon tea. Breakfast in the rainforest was a highlight as was the warthog who joined us. SI tours run a very professional service whom I highly recommend.

Only spent a night at this lodge but packed in a huge amount in less than 24 hrs. Wildlife viewing mainly based on the river but they also have some small walks and viewing towers around the lodge that you can wander around yourself.

Yes, rooms a little basic but your not here to relax. The buffet style food was great and all the staff very friendly and helpful. Communal eating with guests is also great, to exchange experiences/sightings of the day.

Thanks to Sam our guide. Knowledgable, attentive, nothing to much trouble. Helped us manage to see hornbills, monkeys, crocodiles, owls and the fanstaic fire-fly display and even provided tea and biscuits during a break.

A special "big up" for Junior ... the friendliest wild boar I've ever met and the lodge cats.

Had a great time staying at this lodge. We spent one night here, but met return travelers. The staff were friendly and helpful, the food plentiful and delicious. Our guide was Terry who was able to spot orangutans, monkeys and snakes in the distance and made sure we all had the chance to see them before moving on. The boardwalk around the lodge makes exploring locally and the night tour easy for all ages.

Yes, as previous reviewers state the rooms are basic but clean and considering you are in the middle of a jungle very good. Hot water was always on tap. Beds are a bit hard but that is a personal preference. The boarded walk ways are a great way for you to explore on your own. Don't be impatient, stand and wait and the wildlife will come to you. The guides are excellent and wildlife amazing on the boat trips. Buffet food is good and the staff serving are friendly. A great relaxing trip.

My friends and I did a 3D2N trip with friends recently. My overall rating of this lodge is very good. The facilities are some what basic - twin bed, ceiling fan, safe, towel. But what impressed us the most is the hospitality shown by the staff from the moment we arrive at Sim Sim jetty, until the day we check out. The guide who was assigned to us did an excellent job of ensuring we were well informed of the lodge facility, and relay us with loads of information during the Kinabatangan river cruise. The guide also put safety as their priority e.g. wearing safety jacket, and constantly aware of unsafe act, for instance the moment we watch elephants, proboscis monkey and the salt water crocodiles.

The guides know their subject well and we were happy with their service.

All staff always smiles and greet us. And willing to share their experiences whenever we got chance to talk. We also happen to watch Brazil 2014 world cup together with them at night!

Thumbs up to the team and keep it going.

We stayed here for one night during our tour of Borneo in May 2014. We preferred this lodge to the Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge. The nature trail is great - make sure you go for a walk between boat trips. Whilst on the trail we saw loads of monkeys travelling through the rainforest - jumping from tree to tree right above our heads! We stayed and watched them for a few hours.

The boat trips were great and we saw loads of nature. Lots of monkeys, beautiful birds, a crocodile, and some fireflies during the night trip. The scenery is amazing. We also visited a local village which was interesting, and we both planted a tree (a tree-planting project that they have in association with the local village)

When we got back to the lodge from one of our boat trips, we were immediately directed to a minibus to drive 5 minutes down the road where a herd of pygmy elephants had been spotted. This was completely unplanned, and just shows that the staff and guides were going above and beyond to make your stay a special and memorable one.

We also did a night walk on the trail around the lodge with one of the guides. If you're into creepy crawlies you should do this. We saw a range of very large and poisonous spiders, and lots of other bugs. Didn't help us sleep when we got back to our room though!! The resident cat followed us as we went ont he night walk which was quite amusing.

Overall, we couldn't fault this place. It was a great addition to our tour, and we would recommend staying here.

This is an excellent place to stay along the river if you want to be miles from civilisation! The food was simple but magnificent. The location was beautiful and bursting with jungle life. The guides were knowledgeable, friendly and always trying to make your stay unforgettable. The only negative thing I would say is that there is no air con in the rooms but you can always cool off with a speed boat ride down the river. My wife and I stayed 3 days and 2 nights here which I would say is plenty enough time to try and spot all that the riverside wildlife has to offer.
