Technically it was after noon, so it qualified as afternoon tea, but in my heart (and stomach) it was still lunch. FLC pre-booked afternoon tea at Fanhams Hall as a celebration (around £18 per head). Fanhams Hall Hotel hides in plain sight, on the edge of Ware, yet somehow in the middle of the countryside.
It is quite a grand environment and the room was impressive. We were seated at a low table with sofas - someone else had cunningly bagged the best table in the bay window. In fine weather, I am told it is wonderful to take tea outside on the terrace. This day was rainy however, so indoors obligatory.
A gentleman asked if we would like to sniff the teas available and brought a wooden chest with samples inside. Wanting to have the whole experience, yet faintly embarrassed, we duly obliged. Speciality coffees were available at a supplement.
Sandwiches, cakes and home-made scones arrived on tiered stands and we ploughed through.
If it had not been for the odd choice of music on a slightly tinny sound-system, we would have felt like extras from Downton Abbey. Perhaps the pianist had the day off?
The service is very good and it was fun to do - I wouldn't spoil it by doing it too often though. I also came away with a rather sickly feeling - it is, after all, a very cake-centric affair. Treat your Mum, Aunt or Granny - they will love it.

I discovered Fanhams Hall through work when we started to use it for conferences and delegates loved it. Then from there we started to use it for team days out as we were so well looked after. We had our work christmas dinner there in the conservatory restaurant looking over the pond and the food was lovely. The building is beautiful and full of character and the modern additions are tasteful and immaculate. Most recently I took my mum there for afternoon tea in the drawing room. This time we discovered the sunken garden and had a delicious tea. There was too much for us to manage so it was boxed up for us to take home and enjoy later. Great service. Rapidly becoming one of my favourite places.

The ambience in this lovely bright sunny restaurant was excellent. The staff attentive, polite and helpful. The chef cooked chicken especially for the children. The starters were plentiful , varied and tasty. My beef had a lovely flavour . The desserts of a good mixture too. The whole afternoon was a delight and would definitely visit again.

We went here for Christmas afternoon tea as a change from Christmas dinner and it was a pleasure from beginning to end. As we was a large group we had our own area with beautifully laid tables. The staff were so friendly and it was nice to see more than two for the amount of us. The tea kept coming as did the sandwiches and cakes with a great selection for all plus everyone got a doggy bag so hubby was also happy when I got home. Considering what you get and the experience the price is brilliant would recommend to everyone

We took my friend to Fanham's for Afternoon tea the day before her wedding. Fanham's and the gardens are beautiful. The Food was delicious and we all thought it was excellent value for money. They have a vast range of teas that you can drink by the pot full and try as many as you like lots of Sandwiches', fresh cakes and freshly baked warm scones with lots of jam and clotted cream. We also added a lovely glass of Pimms to ours as it was such a beautiful day. You can sit and enjoy your afternoon tea over a leisurely few hours, although I would recommend asking about their sitting times so that you have as long as possible when you book. Our waitress was lovely and they were very accommodating to the dietary requirements of one of the girls. I have already booked a return visit in a few months with friends. Can't wait xxx
