La Fripouniere is full of character and rustic atmosphere - we stayed as a group as part of a cycling tour across the Alps. The accommodation is perfect for hiking or biking in the mountains if you are looking for basic and comfortable accommodation. It sits at the top of the Col de Couillole which gives true tranquillity and access to the trails. The rooms are colourful and cosy but the shared shower and WC facilities are very much refuge-style (remember to lock the doors properly if you are sharing the shower with an adjoining room!).
We had tasty mountain dinner of sausage salad with garlic and herb fried potatoes, homemade bread and a beautiful tarte aux myrtilles (blueberry pie) for dessert. There was a great selection of good-value local wines (2 euros a glass), lagers, liquors and artisan beers (10 euros a bottle although well worth trying). The hospitality was welcoming and attentive. The proprietor is evidently a keen sportsman and can share good local knowledge in French or English.
A couple of points to note - there are many cats and dogs at the property which is fun but not great for those with allergies. Also, the breakfast was basic (homemade toast and jam which I enjoyed) so will not be enough to satisfy some. Those staying should not expect luxury but basic and good food and beds in a wonderful location.
