“Great wedding and vacation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 March 2014

The hotel staff is amazing and our coordinators made our wedding and reception very beautiful and smooth (we didn't have to worry about anything). The hotel is very nice with its open air atmosphere and water theme, and we were greeted with a lei and tropical drink. It is definitely an older property but there have been some recent efforts to renovate things. We took advantage of their hot pools and snorkeling, and definitely the good weather. The food was great and we would definitely recommend this resort to anyone who wants to have their wedding/reception here or who wants to have a relaxing, all-encompassing vacation.

We enjoyed the beautiful relaxed luxury of the Mauna Lani for three nights and would definitely stay again. The open lobby is gorgeous and every staff member was attentive and very friendly. The grounds and hotel are very well kept and clean. Valet or self park is convenient and the pool and beach areas are fantastic.

My family just returned from a two-week stay in Hawaii. This is our fourth year in a row vacationing in Hawaii and we did three islands this time: Hawai'i, Lana'i, and Mau'i. On the Big Island, we returned to the Mauni Lani for the third time in four years. This remains one of my favorite hotels and favorite spots in all of Hawaii.

Since we were at the Mauna Lani last (2012), the rooms have been upgraded and the pool restaurant eliminated, replaced by a new children's pool/hot tub and sunset viewing patio, which was a good idea and a big uptick on what was there before. The rooms, while small, have big bathrooms and are smartly decorated.

For anyone contemplating a stay on the Big Island, the Mauna Lani is still the best place in my opinion. The hotel's open-air layout, intimate feel and expansive grounds provide a truly restful and relaxing spot. Next to the Lana'i Four Seasons, The Mauna Lani beach setup might be the best in Hawaii. Every morning my family would get set up on the beach cabanas. At 11am, I could still count 10 empty cabanas on either side of me. The Mauna Lani gives one on opportunity for true peace and quiet. The Four Seasons Maui, where we also stayed, was just the opposite, with people right on top you, every day, all day.

The little swim cove in front of the hotel is perfect for all - little kids on up to adults. The beach club, which is a short walk from the hotel (and a nice walk at that), is much more crowded but is the spot to go for snorkeling. We went every day.

Pros: (1) superb spot to relax; (2) big, mostly empty pool; (3) great snorkeling at the hotel; (4) excellent food/shopping alternatives at the shops on the grounds - I forgot sunglasses and hopped on a hotel bike and rode to the shops and found a Sunglass Hut. Perfect.; (5) much better location than Four Season's Huaialai - close to Hapuna Beach (a must stop - we went boogie boarding there every day. . .) - with a far better beach setup than Huaialai; (6) FREE laundry. For anyone in Hawaii for a long stay (or even a short one), this is a huge benefit in my opinion. Why more hotels don't offer this is a mystery. . .;(7) kid's golf course; (8) a great feel. The hotel has a nice boutique feel to it, and it is very understated and elegant.

Cons: I'm not sure. Maybe the dumb policy of only letting you use boogie boards for only an hour or snorkeling equipment for four. Didn't matter. we went to Snorkle Bob's at the Shops and rented our own stuff for the week and had them available to us all day every day.

I love going to the Big Island and I love staying at the Mauna Lani. It's the perfect location from which one can launch day trips to Pololu valley, Volcanos, or any of the other state or national parks. It's close to Waimea, which means Merriman's for dinner (we went back to the Big Island this year just to be able to eat at Merriman's), and Monsterra, another great restaurant, is there on the grounds, The Canoe House at the hotel is also superb. Finally, the breakfast buffet was excellent. Quiet (unlike the Four Seasons Maui which was a zoo), with an excellent and diverse selection of food.

Highly recommend the Mauna Lani. One of my favorite places.

Room Tip: ask for a room on the Canoe House side, especially those oceanfront/ocean view rooms.

The Mauna Lani was just right and the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome and achieve a very high level of service. Upon check-in we were upgraded to a partial ocean view room and Pamela was very helpful during our stay. The room was nice and we experienced only minimal noise from within the hotel (though some screechy, drunk guests taking late-night swims in the pool did go out of their way to disrupt our sleep on a couple occasions). If I have one complaint about the hotel, it would be the bed, which was really bouncy/springy and not up to par with expectations for this level of a hotel. That said, we will return to the Mauna Lani, if nothing else because the beach is spectacular and the service is impeccable without being pretentious or over the top. You won't be harassed by staff trying to constantly sell you drinks (they do come around about once an hour, or more upon request if you ask, but not to a nuisance level), tours, timeshares, or upgrades, so if that's your thing go somewhere else. You'll also find signs prohibiting cabana reservations, which is really nice because you can get to the beach at your leisure without fighting the typical crowds.

We viewed whales breaching every day from the beach of the Mauna Lani and from our lanai. Plus if you're an active person who enjoys offshore swimming, the Mauna Lani will provide you with a real treat - the colorful reefs provide abundant fish viewing if you're willing to swim outside the protected beach area. We spent hours swimming out beyond the breaking waves viewing the colorful fish and listening to whales - yes, you can hear them from just offshore.

Room Tip: If you like sleeping with a window open (no A/C), request a southwest facing room.

We were torn between staying at the Hilton at Waikaloa or the Mauna Lani. Thank goodness we chose the Mauna Lani. The hotel has a beautiful and Hawaiian feel to it. They upgraded us to a partial ocean view without asking for the upgrade. If you are going to the Big Island to enjoy the beauty and to relax, then this is the place. We went to the Hilton to check it out. What a zoo!!! Also, no beach. I'm sorry, but why stay at a place without a beach? The beach at Mauna Lani is better for snorkeling. If you want to stay in a hotel with a good beach, then the Hapuna or Mauna Kea Hotel may be a better choice. I would definitely choose the Mauna Lani again.

Room Tip: I would definitely make sure you don't get a room overlooking the parking lot

We stayed for 3 nights, in room 565. The hotel is huge, with a LOT of wide open spaces. It's definitely older style, with the furniture looking a bit tired, but that kind of added to the charm.
Our room was nice, comfortable bed, big tv, double vanity, nice big balcony overlooking the pool.
The breakfast was good, with plenty of variety, in a lovely setting. The pool area is great - nice big pool in lovely gardens right near the beach, and 3x jacuzzis as well! There are places to lounge in the sun all around the pool area, and along the beach, even plenty of hammocks set up in the palm trees.
The staff were all lovely and friendly.

It was a beautiful, relaxing environment.

We visited the Fairmont Orchid for events we were attending, and it was even bigger, and definitley more beautiful, but we were happy where we were as it seemed a lot quieter.

Location was no drama as they have shuttles to everywhere.

Have stayed there four times in seven years. Last stay was probably five years ago. My family loved coming here. We really used it as a midway point to meet up with family who were living in Japan at the time. We would meet them there and stay in standard rooms there. The standard rooms are good and have nice bathrooms. The beach is nice and the hammocks on the resort dispersed throughout beach area are a great added touch. The staff is very attentive and the facilities are top notch for a resort. The spa area is great and fitness nice. The food at the restaurants are very good. Also, great to bring your catch to the restaurant for them to serve up in special ways is an added bonus.
Only negative, was the last time we were there, there seemed to be a large corporate convention going on there and lots of people and parties on grounds of hotel. Not as relaxing as previous stays because too many people there and some areas not open due to parties for that company.
