We stayed at the Fairmont Orchid for three nights as our intro to the Big Island. We really enjoyed our stay here and wished we had a longer stay. The location of the Fairmont is not amazing, as its really only a resort area and a little ways to anything otherwise. In saying that we found reasonable food outside of the resort and didn't have to travel too far. We enjoyed just relaxing at the property, as the room was very restful and the property is gorgeous. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, they even upgraded our room when they found out it was our honeymoon! We found the value very good for the room we got. Just keep in mind that anything extra apart from the room costs more (ex. parking, internet, etc.), so don't be surprised with these extra expenses. We also went to the Luau ' Gathering of the Kings' which is held on the Fairmont property and thoroughly enjoyed it! We would totally recommend it to anyone staying at the Fairmont, great food and a wonderful show (not cheesy in any way!)

The Fairmont Orchid is a wonderful property. I won a silent auction for a three night stay here and added it in to an anniversary trip to Hawaii. We started the trip at the Fairmont. An excellent resort where high service is the standard. From the moment you arrive until you leave the staff is begging to serve you. A great lagoon area is available for snorkeling, swimming and a great pool for lounging.
Although we did not do a message, they have out door massage centers that look amazing. A mist waterfalls and near the ocean. Beautiful gardens and tropical plants everywhere.
The casual restaurant is another wonderful addition. It is in the sand near the ocean. If you go join the Presidents club for free bike rentals and golf clubs. Not your regular clubs, a great set of the newest Taylor Made clubs and the bikes are BMW.

Enjoyed the stay and will go back.

Room Tip: If you can afford the Fairmont Gold, do it. It is a floor for Gold members only with a lot of added...

My new wife and I spent our honeymoon here. We rented a car and explored the island but this was a wonderful home base. Brown's restaurant was absolutely amazing. The lagoon that they have was a wonderful spot to swim. Sea turtles frequent the area, both swimming in the lagoon and laying out on the beaches in the area. We can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: We picked a partial ocean view which we really enjoyed. Some of the ocean view rooms are set back aw...

We stayed with Fairmont Gold privileges and had a fantastic time, with free all-day lounge access and complimentary breakfast, afternoon tea, and evening reception in the lounge. Nearly all the staff tried to be as hospitable as possible. We found the Fairmont Gold concierges to be very knowledgable -- they planned some wonderful excursions for us. Housekeeping services were excellent: always respectful of Do Not Disturb signs (unlike our experience at the Fairmont Kea Lanu on Maui) and the rooms were very well maintained, even though the property is 35 years old.

The property is very well situated on the west coast of Hawaii, where it almost never rains. This alone is a wonderful attribute.

This is not a very modern property, and it doesn't have all the bells and whistles (like waterslides) but we did have a really nice dinner at Brown's, with high-quality dishes and excellent food. The coastline was wonderful to walk along, and on a clear day, the sunsets are priceless (as they are anywhere else in the Islands).

I was not satisfied, however, by Norio's, which claims to be a Japanese restaurant but fails to present sushi to authentic and high standards. For example, Norio's does not provide wet towels to clean one's hands upon arrival, and most of the servers are not really well versed in Japanese cuisine. I saw someone else's "Omakase sashimi" arrive and it was covered with what I call "beginner fish" -- i.e. the plain-tasting, not-too-challenging stuff that you serve to someone who is not sophisticated with sushi.

Overall, however, the trip was very relaxing, and the generally smooth operation of the services of the Fairmont make we want to come back. I also found the overall value ratio to be quite good. And so I give it 5 stars. I note that there is a mandatory resort fee that we were not charged but will be imposed starting in January. This might change my opinion.

Long story short: good value, nice hotel with pleasant modern rooms, family-friendly, helpful and sweet staff, captures the aloha vibe, but not 5 star level. Would stay again. Beach (small) was good for little ones (4.5 and 3) as most days surf was negligible, and although the hotel was booked up we never felt rushed or crowded (always a place to sit at the pool or beach). Easy access to water activities at the beach shack (snorkels, kayaks, boards, etc.) and the beach is a close walk to the rooms. Unlike many places we've stayed at in HI the room was immaculate (housekeeping gets an A+). Fridge was great for storing snacks purchased at local supermarket. 24 hour pool a really nice touch - we were not the only jet-lagged family swimming at 5am! Negatives: on-site food options were not good, and the restaurant service (in multiple locations) was spotty (there was a mistake in most of our orders, and we're not those people - a chicken caesar salad should have chicken, not shrimp). Breakfast buffet a feast at 6:30am, soggy bacon and slim pickings a couple hours later. No minibar. On the plus side, young kids eat free and they always got the fry order right! Self-serve parking fee felt like getting nickel-and-dimed. Long drive to see many attractions of the big island (not the hotel's fault, but please be aware), also takes a while to reach "nearby" places. Would suggest that there be a "repository" for kids' beach toys - there was an informal barter system for people who bequeathed their plastic possessions to the next family.

Room Tip: 3rd floor corridor (south tower) is a conduit to lobby given structure of property - stay on floors...

My wife and I spent a week on the Big Island for the first time. The Fairmont Orchid was an excellent hotel, everything you would expect from a Fairmont property. What made this such a memorable time was the warm, friendly greetings in the morning before we went exploring the island. The valet guys were a wealth of information on attractions, food, route planning etc.

Room is adequate sized and décor is modern. Bathroom has separate shower & bath tub. It took a while to get from the lobby to our room since the resort is very large. The resort is 30 minute drive from airport. You will definitely need to hire a car on Big Island therefore it is $17 for parking per day. Food in the resort is expensive so definitely go up the road and buy your food there. Room Service is expensive and there is a surcharge for room delivery. The resort is a 40 minute drive to Old Kailua Village (where all the shops, bars & restaurants are). The small bay inside the resort has lots of turtles visiting so is a great spot to snorkel.
