We spent the part of the Christmas holidays lounging at the Fairmont Orchid. The staff on the Gold Floor were exceptional, more than happy to help ensure you had a great stay and made you feel at home. The sunsets were unbelievable, breathtaking, eye popping and the best you can imagine. Enjoy! We did.

Let me start of by saying you can go to McDonalds and get free wifi yet you can't get free wifi at a place you are paying $600 a night for? The property is very large and quite nice. Which is a good thing seeing how there is nothing to do nearby. Don't expect to come to this place and just be able to walk around the 'town' because this hotel is not near anything. The pictures on the website are very deceiving. The 'beach' that is there is very very small and not very nice. Thank god the pool is decent enough to make up for it. However, if you plan on going to the pool you pretty much need to get down at 8 am if you want to score yourself a deck chair. We stayed there for New Years and asked the concierge what was avaliable to do for the night. The only thing the hotel had organised was this party / dinner which cost $250 per person. While there are some restaurants on the complex, they always seem to be booked out.... for the entire night! It was practically impossible trying to find a place to eat dinner. On the last night we decided to go to Brown's Beach House. Don't let the name deceive you, this place is the full on white tablecloth expensive place. There was no meal less than $40. I got the $52 steak thinking surely steak this expensive will be nice. It was average. It was tiny and average with barely enough sauce to cover it. The staff was not very friendly and every time they came to refill my glass they would carelessly do it, spilling water all over the table and floor.

My daughter and I spent four nights at the Fairmont Orchid over Christmas vacation (including New Year's). It is truly a beautiful place - incredibly well maintained, excellent service, just a very calming relaxing place to be. The beach is in front of a small lagoon that's very protected and stays calm even on high surf days.

My husband and I eloped to the island of Hawaii in December and wanted to ensure that the trip was memorable. We booked a stay on our wedding night at the Fairmont Orchid and experienced what was easily one of the brightest memories of our entire trip to the island.

From the moment we drove up to the hotel, we were instantly impressed by the attentive and warm staff. After being adorned with kukui nut shell leis, my husband and I were escorted to the Gold Floor check-in area. Check-in was a breeze and within minutes we were exploring our spacious hotel room.

Complete with a luxe king-sized bed, macadamia nuts to snack on, fabulous decor and Hawaiian music softly playing, the room included all the comforts of home and then some. Guests of the Gold Floor (in the Kohala Tower) are also able to make use of the private lounge serving daily continental breakfast, coffee, tea, evening "pupus" and an honour bar.

We enjoyed a meal at one of the hotel's restaurants, Brown's Beach House, before grabbing a couple Mai Tais from the hotel bar and dipping into the hot tub. For other water babies such as myself, you'll be happy to know that the hot tub and pool are both open 24 hours a day. The grounds are immaculately manicured with every and any kind of flora or fauna you'd expect to be growing in Hawaii.

My only regret is that we didn't stay longer. I wish we had booked additional nights but had ultimately made other plans. However, all the more reason to return someday. After all, we'll need to celebrate our anniversaries somewhere, right?

Room Tip: Paying a little bit extra for a room on the Gold Floor will certainly "up the ante" to you...

We stayed at the Fairmont Orchid for 11 nights over the holidays. We absolutely LOVED it!!! It is an incredible property with a wonderful location. The best part of our stay was the staff. They were so helpful and genuine. It was a spectacular vacation and we would go back in a heartbeat. We traveled with our 3 daughters, my Mom and Aunt. It was a very special vacation and the Fairmont exceeded our expectations!!!

My family was here for 5 nights over Christmas. Overall, we had a very nice stay. The property is beautiful and the rooms are comfy and clean. I also really liked the Le Labo toiletries, and they even have a small protected beach with turtles (they even swim with you near the beach).

One of the biggest negatives is that the hotel is not on a long sand beach. They have a very pretty beach protected from the waves by rocks, but it is a bit rocky (they recommend you wear aquasocks) and not that large. Pool service was a bit slow (no one set up the chairs for us, and we didn't see a server until 20 min in), but likely b/c the pool and beach were so crowded for the holidays.

The breakfast buffet was also very crowded, and service on most days was so so. The buffet was good but I wish there was a bit more variety. We had the $85 pp Christmas Day dinner buffet as well. The seafood and sushi were excellent. The desserts looked great, but most items did not taste good. We also dined at Norio's, their sushi restaurant, which was pretty good.

Location is quite convenient. It's approx. 30 min from the airport, and it's close to a few shopping centers, and right next to the Puako Petroglyphs. My last gripe would be that the free wifi throughout the resort is extremely slow, but I believe you can pay extra for faster internet service. I would come back again, but avoid the holidays.

As world travelers staying only in 4-5 Star hotels, I am happy to rate this property a solid 5 star resort! This property has a magnificent layout...mainly due to the expansive lands available on the Big Island. But additionally it is the design of the hotel and its grounds that make it so lush and comfortable and totally exceptional! We have just spent 5 glorious days there...enjoying the many fine restaurant choices and outstanding services provided by the hotel and beach staff.
We only left the property 1 evening for dinner after already enjoying Brown's and Norio's on site...to experience Canoehouse at the Mauna Lani Hotel (next door). Interesting to note that the Canoehouse is a "must do dining experience" on the Big Island. But the restaurant is far superior to the very dated Mauna Lani Hotel where it is located. The Canoehouse restaurant belongs at the Orchid!

Room Tip: Ocean View rooms are better than Ocean Front so that you can enjoy the amazing vegetation, lawns and...
