“Friendly staff, beautiful location.”
Reviewed 20 November 2010

The Fairmont Orchid is a top-flight resort. The staff was remarkably friendly and helpful. The pool was gorgeous and there was plenty of space to sit down and read. The beachfront was pleasant, and was frequented by several sea turtles. The spa was excellent. Food at the hotel, and nearby, was wonderful. Can't recommend more highly!

We love Fairmont hotel chain and have come to the Orchid three times over the past three years. However, this time we were very disappointed. And it goes to show how just a few bad experiences can taint a great hotel. This trip, the Fairmont Orchid put the need of a convention/retreat before its other guests. It allowed the convention to overrun the hotel with loud parties and meetings in all of its public locations. Our lunch was interrupted by speeches from their top sales winners who took over the main dining area. The main pool was closed early for one of their parties. And, worst of all, our baby was woken up several times due to the loud music from their events that ran late into the night (and we had our patio doors closed. As I write this, I am sitting at the desk in my room with doors closed listening to a bad cover band on the beach playing Beatles music rather than sitting on my patio listening to ocean waves. I understand that hotels need conventions. Many of these problems could have be eliminated if the Fairmont Orchid had kept their events in their vast meeting rooms rather than on the beach, in the restaurants, and in their pool area. Much of our disappointment would be eliminated if the Fairmont Orchid had set up events that showed more respect for the many other guests in the hotel. We are very disappointed in the Fairmont Orchid and expect much more from you. Especially at the rates you charge.

We stayed on the "Gold Floor," and we never have had such great service & attention. From the delicious variety of breakfasts every morning. To the appetizers & "Honor" bar every night. As well as the personal consierge was a treat. I normally don't use the consierge in a hotel, but we used her every day here. The pools were great, and were never over-crowded. You could always get a lounge by the pool, while still feeling like we were by ourselves. The room was beautiful and very spacious. The restaurants were amazing. The sushi we had was in all honesty the best sushi we ever had before.

You can tell this is a beautiful place from the pictures but what was a great positive surprise was how quiet and peaceful the Fairmont is. There were plenty of people there but somehow it never felt crowded, as the grounds are spread out and you just don't feel like they are trying to pack as many people in as possible. I also appreciated that I didn't feel like they were trying to rip me off the whole time, e.g. they let us know there is a grocery store down the street which was a good way to get things like water more cheaply than you can at the Fairmont (while overall I thought the place was great value, I do think their poolside cafe was overpriced. It annoys me to pay $5 for a bottle of water). Service was consistently good (concierge, valet, all the restaurants) and there are enough eating/drinking options to keep things interesting, which is important because there aren't a lot of alternatives within a short drive.

Highlights: excellent Japanese restaurant, beautifully landscaped grounds, great tennis facilities, live music during cocktail hour and at one of the restaurants, running/walking trail along the ocean.

We went to Maui after the week at FO and were so spoiled by our experience at FO that we were disappointed and ended up leaving to come home a few days early!

Hotel was wonderful, staff was extremely friendly- the bell staff gave great local recommendations, front desk was helpful check in and check out- would definitely go back. Recommend going after Labor Day- less crowds- no problem getting chairs by pool- etc. Spa was wonderful- a little less modern inside, but the massages by the ocean can't be beat

The Orchid was wonderful. The staff was amazing...I was with a large group (750) and everything ran smoothly. There are always hiccups, but minor ones. The staff did an amazing job, the bellmen were very helpful & cheerful @ all hours of the day. The front desk staff were welcoming and sincere. The housekeeping staff were great, even when I had to pop in & out of the room, we had stuff everywhere & they managed to straighten up around it or put it neatly to the side. Beach Boy staff so friendly even when I complained we couldn't kayak all week, it was very windy! The only little hiccup was the service at the pool & beach and you really can't fault the staff, there were 750 of us, not including other hotel guests and we liked our cocktails. They moved as fast as they could and tried to keep all the seperate tabs.
The water at the beach was so clear, I snorkeled everyday I could and saw turtles in the water everyday. My Fiance played both golf courses and he said they were amazing courses.
I read some reviews & heard some guests that complained that the hotel was "outdated", not at all, it's on a plantation and that's exactly the feel of the hotel.

My husband and I booked a last-minute trip (and a do mean last minute) after our trip to Tahiti was canceled due to the strike this summer. We were then scheduled to stay at the Mauna Kea but found that it really didn't suit our style. We are in our 40's and like a more contemporary feel. The Mauna Kea, though redone, still has the look and feel of the 40's and unless you get an upgraded room, has very, very small rooms. They did try to accomodate us and were very nice. The Fairmont was very full due to a conference and we were on the Gold Floor which was delightful. Unfortunately, we had to have our sheets and comfortable changed the first night since it was dirty, but other than that found the service to be exceptional. Really enjoyed the pool and the concierges were fantastic. They could not do enough for us, including offering us specials, helping us book spa services, which also included specials like lunch etc. Loved being able to get drinks at any time and breakfast. One drawback was that the cleaning cart was left in front of our room about 75% of the time. Not great when we had to move it to come and go. We would go back to this property in a minute as the food was terrific. And, living in California we are really spoiled by food. We've stayed in what people report to be really good properties, like Villa Del Sol ( now Tides), Bacara, Dolphin Bay Resort and Spa, Four Seasons, Ceiba del Mar, etc. and we liked the Fairmont. Can't say the same for Aviara in San Diego or Ceiba del Mar in Mexico. We like to travel and honestly, the people and property were very nice.

Also, check out the seahorse farm. Only one of its kind in the country. Very, very special.
