“Great Beach Front Rooms - The Sound of the Ocean Through The Night”
Reviewed 6 August 2014

My family and I had the chance to spend three nights at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. It was a great way to get introduced to the Big Island of Hawaii. As you may know, there are not a lot of sand beaches on the Big Island because of the lava flows. The Hapuna Prince is located on one of the nicest beaches on the island.

Our room, like all of the rooms in the beach front buildings, had a unique double door. One of them with wood slats and a lock and another that was solid. The slatted door allows air to flow through the room from the back side to the ocean front. We left our sliding glass door that faces the ocean open all night and locked the slatted door on the back side. There were no ceiling fans in these rooms, so having the air flow through made a big difference. But listening to the ocean pounding all night long was the real treat.

The only thing I didn't like was all of the "upselling" that goes on at the front desk when checking-in. There were way too many options to choose from, many with fees, that I felt were being pushed on us when all we were trying to do was get checked in. It is not a reason to avoid the Prince, but it was annoying.

If you can get a decent rate and stay at the Prince, I think you will enjoy it.

Room Tip: For us it was worth it to upgrade to ocean front. We loved listening to the ocean all night.

My husband and i came here last April for one week holiday, we liked it so much that we decided to come again in August to take my mother for her birthday.

The hotel is very clean and the staff is for the majority of the time very courteous.

Negative:

The one thing that prevented us from rating this place with 5 star is the beach service. We were not impressed with it last time we came but we thought it was because we went off season.
Instead it is just not as good as it should be.

There is one of the beach man in particular who is quite aggressive and unpleasant. He made us wait 45 minutes standing on the beach before he gave us a sun bed!
When we asked if we could help and help ourselves with one of the sun beds, he told us that we could bring our own equipment or we had to wait for him to open. He added that we should be happy and grateful that he was letting us borrow 'his' equipment..... We were so mortified that we were left speechless.

After all we did not spend over $400 per night o bring our own sun beds!

We were so upset that we ended up complaining with the management, who seem to have taken action as after that we did not have anymore issues, yet the attitude on the beach remained unfriendly. The staff kept chatting around while guests were waiting standing on the hit beach for umbrellas and beds. They were driving the beach car like they were on a race track and they were throwing the sun beds like they were junk. They displayed such an uncaring attitude that it looked like they hated their jobs. Quite a contras from the rest of the staff or management, who seemed to care for the guests.

The beach opens too late for us, especially at this time of the year. They say it opens at 8.15 in the morning, but in truth it is not ready until 9am.

Some other guests felt the same. The beach should be ready by 7-7.30 am like most of the other resorts in the world.

Back to the positive:

The morning buffet is amazing, pricey but worth the money. The staff is great, and food is very fresh. The dinners are also very good

What we like the most of this resort is the quietness and that it is clean. There were a couple of nights were people were bathing in the swimming pool and being loud, we called the front desk and they promptly fixed the issue! Great service! It seems that the management responds very well and fast to any issues.

Room service is wonderful too. The rooms are cleaned promptly and with accuracy. The bed is very comfortable as well and we had a range of pillows to choose from. We also enjoyed their skin/hair care. We normally bring our own shampoos and lotions but we did not need them this time as their products are of high quality

The resort's gift shops are well stocked and fairly priced, we enjoyed the shopping during the hot hours.

They have resumed the shuttle service to the queen's shops which is very useful if you didn't rent a car.

We will be back on this island and would love to come back to this resort as long as their beach service will improve, as it is the main reason for us to come to Hawaii....to enjoy the beach!

Room Tip: Ocean view

Great hotel. Best part for us is the location right on Hapuna Beach- one of the prettiest beaches in Hawaii. Large comfortable room with lanai and ocean views- even with a "garden room". Big pool, excellent beach, lots of lounge chairs and beach towels. It is paradise.

We were in the rear building tower 4 on the 5th floor, one of the less expensive rooms, but no complaints. The price was right and the room had a lanai that extended to a grassy area that was great with ocean view. Hotel has restaurants for every meal, a shop with reasonable prices to buy snacks, several bars, some shopping shops. Live music at sunset. OPTIONAL resort fee which is better than a mandatory resort fee- for around $24 you get parking, internet, daily water and coffee, and a one time 2 mai tai's.
Rooms are well appointed and have been remodeled. The bathrooms have had a hybrid remodel but are quite large and comfortable. All amenities of a 4 star hotel- robes, shampoo, ice in room, small refrigerator, etc.
The only negative we experienced was our internet did not work so we called the front desk. They in turn patched me through to the internet company and made ME deal with the problem. I had to sit on hold, then talk to the guy, set up an appt, and be in the room- it was BIZARR-O- why would they make the guest do all of that?? Wake of management- I am the guest that paid $11.95 a day for a service- why am I calling an internet comapny on my vacation? Then, they did not apologize or credit me for the day we went without. The internet company was great and quite friendly and got me up in 2 minutes. Ironically the router just needed unplugging and I can't imagine why the front desk did not send someone down to try that as it was hidden behind the bureau...it was really strange.
Besides that odd internet episode, we LOVED our stay and thought this hotel was a perfect place to kick back for 3 nights and really feel like we were on a Hawaiian vacation. Recommend it to anyone. Aloha!

The rooms and beach are beautiful at this resort and if that's all you need for a moderate price, stay here. However, if you want to be able to eat on site or even grab a drink after dinner, stay at one of the other resorts nearby (Marriott, Mauna Lani etc.). The difference is, the other resorts have made a nice little "city" around them to get ice cream, shop and have plentiful dining options. The food is ridiculously expensive at Hapuna - $8 for a cup of coffee, $30 for breakfast and it's just not worth it. The walk to the parking garage is a hassle but that's what you'll have to do to get meals affordable or have any nightlife.

Spent 5 nights at this hotel just chilling and relaxing
Food was excellent, though a bit pricey. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Room was very spacious , air conditioning worked well and everything was spotlessly clean and well maintained. Beech is immediately in front of hotel, with plenty of beach chairs and para soles provided by the hotel.
If you don't have a car you are a bit isolated but that was what we wanted.
Great relaxing venue for a quieter holiday

Be aware restaurants close early so don't leave it too late to eat - though this might be a shock just to Europeans as all Americans we spoke to viewed this as normal

Wifi provided in room but is expensive and you need to pay full price per device so you can run up a big bill quickly

Would certainly recommend this hotel for a quiet week

Room Tip: All appeared good

We included a picture of the view from an ocean front room and from a partial ocean view room. You can decide if it is worth it. We paid an extra $70 a night for the Ocean front room. One negative: the room is farther away from the beach and the front desk.
The room has strong AC and a strong shower. The bathroom is very spacious.
The beach is really the best part of this hotel. The staff was nice, especially the valet.

Room Tip: See pictures of the view of Ocean front room versus a partial ocean view room.

The hotel is outdated, open bathroom and toilet. Felt a little bit greasy and not really inviting. Additional pricing is annoying, e.g., for internet, parking. Breakfast was really bad, never had such a bad steak. The location is very good, though. The beach is clean and very easy to reach. The pool is ok. If this hotel would be updated, they would include internet and parking for free and change the cook, this could be a first class spot.
Next restaurants are a little bit far away.

Aloha and thank you for your comments. We are looking into your comment regarding the breakfast steak and appreciate this being brought to our attention. Since we do not charge a daily resort service charge as most other hotels do, only those guests who utilize parking and internet are assesed a fee, rather than all guests. We are, however, also reviewing this policy. Mahalo.
