I was underwhelmed with the look of the building at first, it's a block concrete mass, but the interiors are all kona wood, it keeps the rooms cool and after you've spent time on the glorious grounds, peaceful and relaxing beach, the stellar food and the service, the fact you can visit their nearby sister property Hapuna at no cost and experience a different beach (much more waves, better snorkeling) and pool--we are huge fans. You can max out your experience by playing golf and tennis overlooking the amazing Hawaiian lush Pacific coast and explore nearby Waikola, Waimei and Kaiua Kona or just relax and rejuvenate on the grounds. You are definitely away from it all in a luxe, Hawaiian setting and the most peaceful, pristine and beautiful coastline. Tons of kids activities all day long from tennis lessons, kayaking to making Hawaiian crafts. The buffet breakfast is among the best we've had, smoked salmon, waffle and omelet bar, three different kinds of breakfast breads, countless fresh pastries, hash with poached eggs, fresh pineapple, guava juices and a breathtaking view. Not to mention, children under 12 EAT FREE-- I have twin 11 year-olds. So, while expensive, not so much if half your party is under 12 and my teenage son eats as much as two adults. The dinner at Hua Tree and Manta were expensive, but also exceptionally tasty. You get what you pay for, at least it is very good and service exquisite. I've been to may pricey resorts only to be disappointed by expensive bland food. We had a T-bone at the Manta and it was terrific. My kids loved the mahi mahi. At Hua Tree, we had very tender and tasty ribs and beef tenderloin skewers. Very good. We drove to nearby Kawaihae and Aloha Cafe just 5 minutes away for real Hawaiian food for breakfast another day and it was terrific. We also drove 20 minutes to Waimea and Merriman's to round out our trip. It's one of the few hotels where I saw EVERYONE wearing Mauna Kea gear--whoever designed the orange motif was brilliant! We will definitely be back!
