Centara Villas Samui
Ranked #11 of 63 Hotels in Maret

Reviewed 5 August 2014

We've stayed here in early july 2014. Family of 4 (with my 2 daughters 8 and 10).
It is pretty difficult in Ko Samui to find affordable accommodation for families like ours. Most hotels will either refuse or propose 2 rooms. Others will charge you like crazy. But not Centara Villa.

The room was large enough to accommodate the 4 of us, with an extra bed. Very well decorated, and a true pleasure.
We had a very nice ocean view and a balcony with table and chairs.
Bathroom is large enough, and is very comfortable, despite this crazy curtain. Well, I think shower curtains are firmly standing in the unacceptable zone.

The beach, very beautiful, is not a real beach for swimming, bathable at high tide only. Even then, water is very shallow. I have been attacked by an urchin who left my right knee quite painful for a bit, but it disappeared in less than an hour. I spared the life of the miserable creature, and went to the swimming pools. The nicest one is at the middle level. Highest level is OK with young kids, water is as shallow as the sea. Lower level pool is beautiful, but crowded, and the water stayed turbid during our entire 3-night stay.

Restaurant is very good, although a bit expensive. Nicely situated (almost) on the beach. Breakfast was included for the 4 of us and was more than decent. It's buffet style, they have pancakes, a good and high quality selection of jams, USA-friendly stuff, but also french-friendly croissants + pains au chocolat. If you feel adventurous, you can also have thai breakfast, with lots of chili, rice and fish.

Service is excellent at the restaurant, both services, with people really willing to help you. At the bar also. Front-desk personnel is another matter. I felt like I was at the counter of a railway station. Not really disturbing them, but they could feel a bit better should you weren't there. Maybe because there was too many people in the lobby at the same time?

In-room cleaning was excellent the first morning, but stuff was missing the second day, like some towels. And room service charges you to bring a bucket of ice cubes, along with your drink order!

Parking is small, but it was big enough to accommodate our rental car, a large pickup truck. Anyways, renting a car in thailand scare tourists, so parkings were empty in hotels most of the time.

And if you are overweight, not well fitted or with any kind of disabilities, remember that there are a hell of a lot of stairs here.

One last word: don't even bother going at the butterfly farm across the hotel. Even as a client, you have to pay full price for it, and it does not come cheap. There is almost nothing to see in there, part of the farm is abandoned, and the butterflies escape through the many holes around. Good for them!

Dear 244erict
Thank you for taking the time to write a review, we are delighted that you found us a family friendly resort and that it represented excellent value for money. You have mentioned that the beach is not suitable for swimming, we have commented on this before about the low water levels being a seasonal issue and that they should return to normal later in the year, at this point the sea is wonderful for swimming. We do have three swimming pools and these offer a superb alternative to those who choose not to go into the ocean.

Stayed here for 2 weeks in May 2014.Booked a pool villa which was excellent and worth the extra. Resort itself has alot of steps but we didnt find it a problem.Accomodation is spacious well maintained and spotless. Staff very friendly and hard working especially at Happy Hour!
We ate here every day and didnt find it expensive and the food was excellent. Shuttle buses run into Lamai and Chaweng several times a day and booking is necessary but the cost is cheap. We had a couples massage in the spa and it was very good. However massage is available in the towns for about £4-£8 depending on whether you want full body or just feet and legs. This resort is ideal if you want somewhere quiet and private to relax and chill out but also want to visit some of the slightly larger towns for an day/evening.We renewed our wedding vows in a Bhuddist Temple whilst we were here and had the most amazing day with dinner on the beach on our return. Wouldnt hesitate to come back here.

Room Tip: Pool villas are great - free cocktail every night and snacks at the bar!

After reading some of the other reviews i did think about actually changing the Hotel...thank god we didn't!!! Centara Villas is a little out of the way from the local towns but i would say that your not missing much, lamai is very busy and full of the usual local tourist tat, however they do have a very good fish market and some good restaurants.
Hotel shuttle bus is very good and runs all day until about 12 midnight, taxi is cheap £10.

Lots of bars with lots of travellers and old men with young girls, and if you want to see a lady boy, loads of them.

We stayed in a pool villa for 4 nights and then a Deluxe villa for 17 nights, the rooms are fine double bed, TV and mini bar, and room service is also available, rooms are cleaned once sometimes twice daily.

On arrival we opted for the Hotel Baht bonanza and topped up twice as we ate and drank in the hotel most of the time, apart from going along to the Cool Bar just up the beach.
Be aware that if you don't spend all the Baht before you checkout then you loose what hasn't been spent, however i would like to thank some lovely guests that gave us bottles of wine before they left, much appreciated, just a shame we spent all of ours and couldn't do the same.

Breakfast is good with plenty of choice, i must say that it was a little off putting seeing the flies on some of the breakfast cereal and don't understand why it was not covered like the other options, it was annoying that they would run out of fruit juice and other items but once the staff had been told they were filled up immediately.
Lunch is from the a la carte menu and they have plenty of choice, the only thing i didn't like was
the chicken burger as i thought it would be a chicken breast but it was actually a processed chicken burger, but the beef burger was lovely.
Dinner was either a themed buffet night or from the a la carte menu, we love Thai food and tried most of the menu, although the buffet nights were also very good, loved the seafood one, we had rock lobster, king prawns, green lip mussels,sea-bass and the salads and rice all lovely.

The 3 pools are all lovely and kept very clean, we actually liked the beach, the water is clear on most days but occasionally you would get some seaweed, but hey its the "sea" the beach is very private and quiet with some large rocks but is pretty.

The spa is nice and we did use this a few times, i had a back massage and a foot massage and pedicure, all nice but i was a little disappointed with the pedicure.
It is a little pricey but no more expensive than any other hotel spa.

The staff at Centara Villas are lovely and all very helpful, big smiles and always say hello.
Golf is a credit to the main bar in this Hotel, if he is off then standards do slip, the girls in the restaurant don't all speak great English but they do try and have a good sense of humour, Bonny was one of the restaurant managers and was very helpful with my specific needs OR should i say fussy needs! lol

Steps - The Hotel is set on a cliff so yes lots of steps but it wasn't a problem.

All in all we had a lovely time but just wish we were still there.

Thanks for a great holiday x

This was our first time in samui and centara villas has not disappointed! We are currently still holidaying here and do not want to leave!
I'm so confused about people saying it is past it's prime - are you seeing something totally different?
Positives -
1. On our arrival to the airport out prebooked hotel taxi was waiting - man was very helpful and friendly and journey took about 30-40 minutes.
2. When we arrived at the hotel a porter was waiting to take our bags and we were welcomed with a complimentary cocktail which was a nice gesture. Check in was quick and the staff were all very friendly. Our luggage was carried to the room by the porter and he showed us how everything worked and where everything was located.
3. As you can see from the picture of the room it is very nice. We are staying in room 116 which is a garden villa but it has everything you need a room to have. There is a free safe provided in the wardrobe allowing you to choose your own pin. There is aircon and also a fan which are both extremely powerful. A fully stocked fridge which is full of treats available from the mini bar. The room is stocked with 2 free bottles of water a day, coffee + tea, a kettle and a hair dryer. Laundry bags are provided in the wardrobe if you would like any washing done and there is also an umbrella and 2 pairs of flip flops - nice little touches.
4. There are 3 pools to choose from and a vast amount of sunbeds meaning you always have somewhere to sit which can be a problem at other hotels. The infinity pool is directly leading onto the beautiful beach (see pic) which is lovely to see when relaxing. There are sunbeds and umbrellas positioned on the beach adding more sunbathing options.
5. Beach towels are provided free of charge which is great if you want to pack light and are changed every day.
6. The hotel offers a baht bonanza package which I think is definitely worth doing! We deposited 10,000 Thai baht and the hotel add 5,000 meaning you have 15,000 to spend on food, drink and spa treatments. I think this is a great idea as it means we don't have to carry our money around which could be unsafe instead you sign for everything and can call reception at any point to check your remaining balance.
6. The hotel has a BBQ/buffet and a menu option every night in the restaurant. All the food we have tried has been amazing and comes out hot and fresh. The yellow curry and green Thai curry are our particular favourites.
7. The staff are all extremely friendly and welcoming. They are helpful if you have a problem and work so hard!
8. There are on site facilities such as a shuttle bus to chaweng and lamai at 80 baht and 40 baht which is good but you need to book. There is a spa on site offering treatments - I haven't used this so cannot comment. The dive academy are also on site offering scuba diving and tours - my boyfriend is currently taking part in the padi open water dive and is really enjoying it. The hotel offers kayaks as well which are great fun!

Cons
1. As said in other reviews there are a lot of steps but I'm pregnant and they really don't bother me at all. If you want the amazing sea views you get at the reception you have to expect to walk. Like I said not a problem for us but others may be put off e.g older people.
2. Wifi isn't free - when I'm here I don't particularly want to spend my time checking my phone so for me I really enjoy being away from it all.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone it really does feel like I'm in paradise and gives me a happy feeling!

We stayed in July2014 and are very fussy we have to commend the hotel and staff on a wonderful experience. It was our first time to Thailand and did not know what to expect . We have travelled to many places around the world and Koh Samui exceeded our expectations.
We ate in the restaurant every day for lunch or dinner the food was always nicely presented and tasty, The choice on the menu will satisfy even the pickiest of diners.
There is a free cocktail hour on one night which was really good it was nice to see everyone dressed up.
The staff went beyond helpful.
We wouldn't hesitate to recommend Centara villas to friends and family.

Had booked a spa villa at this hotel from the Centara website for 3 nights. We reached the hotel at 11:30 am and were asked to wait for a couple of hours as the rooms were not ready at that point in time(which was fair as per hotel policy). Around 1:30 pm the hotel staff informed us that there were some maintenance issues and they will be able to offer us a standard deluxe ocean room only (instead of a spa villa). Obviously I was annoyed and asked them that I had made the bookings close to 3 months back and paid the full amount why wasn’t i informed about the downgrade earlier. (infact I had exchanged emails with the hotel a day prior to my arrival for booking cabs etc). They offered us a complimentary dinner which we politely refused to accept in lieu of the room. They promised us that they will provide us either a spa villa or a pool villa the next day, which they did(pool villa). Unfortunately we had booked our trip in such a way that we had planned to relax at the hotel on day 1 and the next two days we were out for full day excursions to Angthong and Koh Tao. They also promised us that for the first night they would be charging us for a standard ocean view room and will credit the access amount at the time of check out which never happened.
Overall the property is well past its prime and our room for the first night (Room 320) was small , the refrigerator was old and the taps / showers were broken in the bathroom. Otherwise the room was tidy , neat & clean. The (ocean view) room had a restricted view of the ocean because of a tree right in front. Breakfast was average, nothing spectacular, tried the fisherman’s outlet (based on the reviews below) just outside the hotel & found it to be better than the hotel restaurant(and cheaper). The service levels were mixed (average to good) , some of the folks like pui, sassy & the lady at the bar were very polite & helpful but some of them like Wan were very aggressive & lacked basic ability to handle guests at the Front desk. The hotel is in the middle of nowhere (literally) & you cant find taxis outside the hotel. The taxis booked through the hotel are very expensive & the shuttle they run has limited frequencies (at 11 am, 2 pm, 4pm & 7pm to Lamai & Chaweng and back) so you will have to plan your travel accordingly(which was quite frustrating for me personally) They charge 40 baht for Lamai & 80 baht for Chaweng. The hotel has too many steps and a walk from the restaurant to the reception can be a very tiring climb for some people ( 70 steps approx). Our pick up and drop s were prompt and we had no issues with that. (small mercies)

Suggestion: Book your stay through an agent (booking.com/Agoda etc) or face the risk of getting downgraded.
Location wise stay at Lamai which has a beautiful serene beach and not far from all the action. Grand Centara at Lamai should be a better option. I will not stay at this hotel again.

Dear Epiphany2014,
Thank you for spending the time to write a review, we are sorry to hear that the Hotel did not meet with your expectations and we will continue to try to improve. Your observation of the Hotel's condition and the displeasure that your room had some maintenance issue seems to conflict, obviously if a room has gone out of repair we would not ask a guest to stay in it, but we would offer the first available alternative, which we did with the complimentary upgrade to a Villa with a Private Pool. The offer of a dining experience was a gesture by us to convey our apology.
Travelling to and from the Hotel to the busier resort areas of Samui and the steps within the Hotel are well documented on tripadvisor, that is why these reviews are so important as it offers people an informed choice on where they would like to stay and your comments will help future guests make that informed choice.
