Review of Fovant Badges

Fovant Badges
Reviewed 26 August 2014

The Fovant Badges are a set of regimental badges cut into a chalk hill between Salisbury and Shaftesbury in the Cotswolds. They were made by soldiers garrisoned nearby and waiting to go to France during WWI. Eight of the original twenty remain. Took a great effort to accomplish this, so it’s worth a short stop by to view. Apparently the recruits didn't play baseball in their spare time so they did this. Little did they know what was to await them!

The Fovant Badges are well worth a look if you are interested in curiosities, chalk figures or military history.

The badges are clearly visible from the road and, when we visited, in very good condition. There is a layby that creeps up on you that has a board detailing what regiments the badges represent. The souvenir brochure, which was available at the Fovant Post Office (you need to ask at the desk), was well worth a read and has lots of photographs and information regarding the upkeep of the badges. When we visited, the contours of the YMCA badge, which has since been grassed over, could just be made out when viewed from certain angles. Another three badges, located away from this main cluster, have unfortunately become overgrown with time and are no longer visible.

An unusual slice of history that continues the tradition of chalk figures etched into the Wiltshire landscape.

Have read about the Fovant Badges I took the opportunity to visit. Could only view from the road but it was worth it.

We had never heard of these and came upon tham by chance when we were staying in Fovant. There are now 7 badges but its a shame that more have been lost. They are hoping to restore them in time for 2014.

The badges are seen from a lay-by on the side of the A30 between Salisbury and Shaftesbury. The plaque in the lay-by is interesting. Just a shame there isn't more, like a museum.
