“Gone down the pan.”
Reviewed 28 September 2009

We stayed here for two nights, having done so the previous October. What a difference! It’s still a wonderful pub, with bags of “Olde Worlde” charm, great beer and superb food. Also a perfect situation for walks around the surrounding countryside.

However, the big minus-point was the staff. Whereas in our previous visit, the staff were English and very pleasant and helpful, these now seem to have been replaced by an ill-mannered bunch of surly and largely disinterested East Europeans. Example; when we’d waited 45 minutes for our breakfast, and politely enquired of the waitress what the hold-up was, her response was to say “Well don’t blame me, I’ve only just come on!”, as she turned her back and walked away.

Needless to say, when the breakfasts did finally arrive, the order was completely wrong. The waiter’s response? “Sorry, I’ve completely lost it. What did you order again?”.

The one saving grace in terms of staff was an Australian chap behind the bar, who seemed to be the only one holding things together. Even he was rushed off his feet, especially when the bar queue was quite literally out of the door, as if anyone ordered a coffee, for example, he had to go to the kitchen to make it, whilst the queue lengthened. Incidentally, whilst queueing, it’s best to keep moving before your feet stick to the filthy carpet; likewise on the stairs.

I was astonished when at one point while the Aussie was in the kitchen and I was in the lengthy queue, the lady who I took to be the owner/ manageress appeared behind the bar to smile at us and reassure us that “Someone will be with you shortly”. Had no-one ever taught HER how to pull a beer pump?

A great shame, because it used to be a smashing place, but at the top-drawer prices they charge, we expect better. We won’t be going back.

I called in at the pub (actually in Elterwater) with my wife and was the second time I'd visited within 8 weeks. This is a gorgeous setting made even more impressive with the gorgeous weather. Evening meals are served from 6.30 and based on our experiences are superb. The prices are on the high side but the quality is well worth it - I had the steak and ale pie and while at £12.50 this is pricey for a pie, but what a pie!!! Compliments to the chef together with the friendly bar staff.

Just stayed at this little pub as a quick getaway with my boyfriend. Great little friendly place - staff were really helpful without being over the top, food was fab. Rooms had character (not just a box with a bed!) Proper pub! Gets really busy at times so best to book a table at night.
