Perfect for a stay in the heart of the Lakes away from the overcrowding in the bigger towns. Elterwater is a pretty village with a cracking pub that serves good food, just what you need when you get off the hill. The hostel is ex-YHA. It is very well set up, but with a much more relaxed atmosphere than the rule heavy YHAs. Staff are very friendly. Having visited the hostel twice in the last 8 months I was impressed to note the continuing enthusiasm of the staff, who engage with all visitors, offering local knowlegde and enthusing with plans. Rooms are what you would expect in a hostel, clean and functional. Views are beautiful.
Tip - If arriving by car, pack ready to unload. There is a National Trust car park 50m away, but if you're not an NT member you should unload your car at the YHA and then drive to the other end of the village to park. It's really no bother if you are organised, and gives you the opportunity to stroll through the village on arrival.

This weekend me and my friend stayed at the hostel, it was perfect for us (mid 20's). Charlie and Andy looked after us perfectly, more than happy to help us noobies with any questions about the Lake District. Breakfast was nice and helped us get the energy we needed (we didnt eat there in the evenings). Washing facilities were great for a hostel and the mattresses were comfortable enough for us. Would stay again

Thanks for the great comments. I'll make sure Andy and Charlie know their efforts are appreciated.

May have been the first time, but hopefully not the last!

Stayed for a weekend for my Dad's 60th. With about 40 of us staying we were looked after really well and provided us with a buffet for the night of the party which was lovely. The staff were really friendly and helpful. Thanks for a great stay.

Stayed here with a group of people and were very well looked after. Great access to all the nearby hiking trails and a drying room for all the wet gear after the hikes.

Also has a warm and comfortable common area and a very well equipped kitchen for re-fuelling in the evenings.

I stayed at Elterwater Hostel for two nights during 'Storm Desmond' as part of a large group of mountain bikers. I can't fault the place. We sorted ourselves out food-wise, other than the Saturday night when Nick (the Manager) cooked the whole group of around 30 a 3 course Christmas dinner. He was on his own because his colleagues could not get in through the floods and he did a great job getting all the food out with only a bit of help from us lot.

There's a pub only 1 minute walk away and free parking 5 minutes walk away and the National Trust parking (free for members) 1 minute away, but you can pull in front of the hostel and unload there before parking if you need to.

The kitchen is well equipped and there's a large dining area with loads of space. The rooms are basic as you'd expect but clean and comfy and bed linen included.

There a big drying room (much needed!) and space to store bikes too.

I can't think of a better place to act as a base for getting out and about or for hiding from the weather, although we still managed to get out every day!

Thanks guys, keep up the good work and see you again.
