“Basic but fun”
Reviewed 14 April 2014

We chose to stay here as we were looking for a two bedroom place close to the tea plantations. The cottage is in a great setting overlooking the reservoir and it is right in the middle of the tea plantations. The staff are really friendly here and accommodated all our requests. We had breakfast and dinner here and the food was good quality with a good choice too.
The accommodation is on a basic level though, but everything worked and we had everything that we needed. The frogs that appeared in the bathrooms provided much entertainment for the family! We will have fond memories of the place!
If you do stay here, take a trip to a near by tea factory - it was really interesting.

We stayed here in order to climb Sri Pada (Adams Peak), a bit more than an hour away by tuk-tuk. Anything closer was already booked out but we were happy with our choice as it turned out, because this place is very peaceful and calm and relaxing, and we needed a bit of a break by then from the traffic and other general excitement of Sri Lanka. Looking out at a placid, mirror-like lake and being surrounded by a tea plantation dotted with beautiful eucalypts (from home!) was a real breath of fresh air. Now for the 'pluses": a very comfortable bed with lovely fresh white cotton sheets; a clean bathroom with the best water pressure anywhere, not just in Sri Lanka; the very excellent service of the manager, Ganesh; superb home-cooked Sri Lankan curries and cold beer. Ganesh organised transport to take us to Sri Pada to see the sunrise and back 'home' for a hearty breakfast and bed. After our climb up 5,000 steps and back down we were especially glad of such a peaceful, comfortable place to rest. Thank you Ganesh!

Since my first review of this cottage we have since visited it 3 more times and taken along 8 more people as well who have all fallen in love with it. This is really no surprise as the service just keeps getting better every time we go there. I really must mention Mr. Ganesh the manager, there are many upmarket hotels and attractions that can learn a lot from him about true service. Despite Castlereigh having only two cottages and being a rather small operation, it's food and service rival the biggest hotels in Sri Lanka. There is no request too big for him, he goes above and beyond in order to make your stay as pleasant as possible. The rooms are neat and clean. A little small but very cosy. Bathrooms are also very well kept which is a huge plus for me as I really prefer good toilets. The food is done by him and his assistant Manoj, and it's amazing. I rather felt we were not paying enough for the lavish treatment we received.

Usually people tend to pass over dickoya heading to the more popular destinations such as Nuwara Eliya or Diyatalawa etc. But my family and I, well we have found our spot and we love it!. It is situated quite close to nallathaniya base if you're planning a trek up Adam's peak. And if you plan on leaving at night, Mr ganesh is ready with hot coffee to warm you up. He pops in at just the right times to make sure we're ok. My husband and I actually gained weight the last time we were there as we were fed so handsomely. The food is great and you may request a dish/dishes to be made just the way you like it. Western or Curries. I'd recommend at least one or two curry meals as they do a superb job of it.

If you're extremely fussy I'd suggest a fancier hotel but for me this place is a treat. Clean, comfortable, good food, great service.Great Value for money. Unbelievable views. Perfect to relax your mind and body. All you have to do is get there, They will spoil you to bits!

Room Tip: If you'd like a particular meal when you arrive just call ahead and tell Mr.ganesh. Also, cottag...

When you sit on the balcony of one of these cottages and watch the water the trees, the tea and mountains you get into a trance and never want to come out. I cannot believe these are work related visits!

I have come here over 25 times on work and still every time is better than the last. Ganesh the Manager and Manoj the cook are superb and treat you like Lords and give you the privacy too.

Room Tip: Rooms are small but you stay there only to sleep

This place exceeded all our expectations! I called to make our reservations and Ashok was extremely friendly and helpful. When we arrived, we were totally charmed. There are two bungalows ("cottage" just sound too flimsy for what these are) sitting on magical Castelreigh Lake, with wide front porches and surrounded by Eucalyptus trees and tea bushes. The tea pickers waved to us as we drove up, and later showed us how to plug the new leaves from the bushes. We were met by host Ganesh and assistant (and genius chef) Manoujh, and we were delighted with our two-bedroom, two-bathroom house. The rooms are large and there is also a living room and dining room. A bell brings Ganesh, who serves tea or food whenever you want. I slept beautifully in this quiet oasis, and it was also a perfect place to base yourself if you want to climb Adam's Peak. We decide to climb at 2 a.m. so we left the bungalow at around 1:15 in the morning. Driving on the deserted roads late at night we saw wild boar, mongoose, a large spotted cat (not sure what it was) and other wildlife. It was wonderful! After we returned from Adam's Peak the next morning, exhausted, Manoujh had a fabulous breakfast waiting for us and then we relaxed on the front porch and had an easy day seeing a few waterfalls and admiring wild monkeys, and having tea at the goofy but fun Tea Castle.

Room Tip: The only small criticism I have to the place was that the bathroom in the back bedroom had an unfort...

We stayed in the cottage for 2 nights after an exhausting trek to the Knuckle Range and there could be no better place for us to relax! We wished we could have stayed longer. The cottage is clean and comfortable, the host is very helpful and polite. In fact it was the best customer service ever experienced by us in Sri Lanka. The host is also a passionate cook - ask to help him in the kitchen while preparing the dinner and you will learn a lot about curries ;) The food and tea they serve are very delicious. The surroundings are trully stunning: Beautiful tea plantations invite for walks (sometimes crawls;), sunrise takes your breath away. In total: highly recommended!

Room Tip: Be aware that the price is charged per person, not per room (we missed this information while reserv...

THis was our favorite stop on our trip to Sri Lanka. The cottages sit on a lake that looks like a surreal painting. The staff saw to our every need and the cottage we stayed in was beautiful, comfortable and clean. I strongly recommend you eat dinner at Castlereigh. The young man who did the cooking was a genius! It sits in a tea garden and one of the tea pickers showed us how she picked and let us try our hand at it! It was a good starting out point for a hike up Adam's Peak.
