“Very comfortable budget accommodation”
Reviewed 8 January 2013

The accommodation is basic but very comfortable. The food is simple but well prepared. The staff are delightful, very helpful and informative. The location is good, close to Kosi mouth. About a 30 minute brisk walk. Vusi or Justin will take you there in a 4x4 for about 100 rand return and help you carry your stuff to the "aquarium", a fabulous inland reef full of the most glorious tropical fish. Try to book a room away from the parking area which gets a bit noisy with kids and cars.
Best - lovely staff, eager to please and work very hard to do so.
Worst - I would have preferred it if the cars were parked out of sight.

Room Tip: Away from the parking area.

Thanks very much for reviewing Amangwane.
We are looking into the possibility of moving the parking area closer to the gate, although it is only at peak periods (December especially) that there will be many cars because the volume of people is so much greater at that time.

We stayed 2 nights just before Christmas , Tommy set up a tent to accommodate 5 ( 3 adults..2 kids) as self catering he even had the staff bring down our own large braii grill (BBQ grill for the rest of the world) the tents and site are fairly primitive with the exception of solar lights and hot and cold water ,ther is a large common area kitchen with gas stoves and chest freezer as well as a power outlet to charge cellphones. However these things are just the basics ,what made this trip enjoyable for us was the manager ,field guide and medic Tommy he guided us to the dos and donts of the area as well as the sites to see also rendered aid to my 6 year old daughter who was stung by a blue bottle jelly fish . Again thank you Tommy we will definitely book again.

The Camp offers the necessary basics: Tents with 2 single rooms, ablutions separated only with a curtain from the main room and a shared kitchen. The water for the shower is heated by gas and depending on the wind it can smell quite a lot in the tent itself. The mosquito nets are to small for the bed and in order to avoid any struggles I didn't use them. Vuzi, the guide from the camp was very nice and I enjoyed the activities offered by the camp (canoe tour and walk to the kosi bay mouth appr. 45 minutes). The camp is in the middle of nowhere and beside the offered activities there is not much to do.

Amangwane was the only low point of our five weeks in SA (we stayed primarily in self-catering accommodation, including other tented accommodation, which provided a good basis for comparison). It feels like a kids camp -- our tent/reed shelter had two very rusty tin mugs in the bathroom, a horribly cracked and broken mirror with jagged edges placed at waist height in the shower (no mirror above the sink), plain beige "army style" blankets on the beds, no covering on the bare concrete floors, not even reed mats, and nowhere to place clothes or other items except a hanging plastic compartmentmentalized unit suitable for a few light items. Not even enough wall hooks for our jackets. In short, the accommodation is basic, wholly lacking in charm, and way overpriced (particularly compared to the adjacent property, Utshwayelo, which is similarly priced but infinitely superior). The food can most charitably be described as "so-so."

Dear Travelover2003, we’re sorry the standard of the accommodation wasn’t what you were expecting. We do our best to ensure that guests know that the accommodation is very basic before they book.
Amangwane is not just an accommodation establishment, it is a community development project with no outside funding. All profits are currently going back into improving the camp, which has been built up from just a few dome tents back in 2003. We strive to ensure guests are well looked after and enjoy themselves.
We are surprised and disappointed by your review of the food, however, as we take pride in the usually good standard of our catering. We will follow up and make sure we get things back to our normal high standard.

Rustic camp with a big heart... Thank you Vusi & team for a wonderful holiday. We had the best time snorkelling in the akwarium and spent a week admiring the beautiful Kosi Bay lakes. We went spearfishing, did a canoe trip round the lakes, got chased by a hippo on a boat trip and spent a day in glorious Mozambique. The kids agreed it was their best holiday ever. Back at the camp we sat around the fire and got spoilt by all the loving home cooking prepared for us. What a way to relax!

You are welcome!
Thank you for the lovely review! I am glad that you love the site as much as we do, and that your holiday was memorable and relaxing. It's fantastic to hear that the kids enjoyed it so much, it seems empty here without them, so come back soon!

I stayed at Amangwane Lodge for 2 nights in March with a group of friends. It was my first time staying in any sort of tented accommodation and I was surprised to see it so comfortable with all facilites including a patio, good beds and hot showers.

Tommy was kind, welcoming and spoke with great clarity. He took us for a walk in grassland up to viewpoint and talked on ecosystems. It was good to see the fish traps and mouth of Kosi bay by evening and from hilltop, and compare by actually being there and experiencing the feeling the following morning. I soon got accustomed to my comfortable tent. Certainly didn’t expect hot showers and comfy beds, a big plus point. I sat on the patio recollecting my thoughts on this trip. Little did I know of this part of Africa. A private safe place to unwind and adventure not too far off.
Loved the layout of the main area, it looked so cosy. All open plan kitchen, dining room and reception overlooking the camp fire. What more could one ask for then sitting under the stars near a beautiful camp fire and natural surroundings.
A thrilling drive in 4 by 4 jeep up to fish traps where we were given a talk and had a chance to practice with a spear on leaves. Another new experience for me to walk in the river and watch friends go in fish traps to catch fish.

Kosi bay was a hidden gem. An unspoilt paradise island with warm waters, a memorable experience where I was taught how to snorkel by Tommy, who was patient with me and helped me gain confidence. I loved it once I got the hang of it. It felt we were on a private secluded resort coupled with magnificent views. I was also helped crossing the river by Tommy. Very well looked after. Thoroughly loved the whole eventful day.

Food here was delicious and cooked with attention and I was touched with the way it was prepared for me, being vegetarian. Tommy worked very hard in the kitchen and I was watching him. He did with great pride and is passionate about cooking. No short cuts. All natural and fresh ingredients. Such a family atmosphere.
I would love to return to Amangwane Lodge. It felt so peaceful and tranquil and paradise with warm clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean just minutes away. Ideal place for couples, groups of friends and also families.

If your idea of a fabulous time is "his and hers" bathrooms in 5 star luxury then read no further.
If your dreams extend as far as having a great time seeing how little some parts of the world have changed, swimming or snorkelling in luxuriously warm water under cloudless blue skies, sitting around the campfire after a great meal swapping stories over a cold beer, looking at a fabulous night sky and enjoying some great company at the same time then Amangwane is for you.
Somewhat more rustic than its sister property Umkhumbi Lodge further south, Amangwane it must be said is not for everyone. But if you like to sleep with the breeze providing the air conditioning and the insects (outside) providing the aural backdrop then this is it.
Comfortable beds, a great chef (good on you Tommy)and Kosi Bay itself on your doorstep ( or it would be if you had one)this is the place to come to unwind and forget the stresses and strains.

Our community camp is a rustic haven in the dunes surrounding the lakes of Kosi Bay. Situated just 10-minutes 4x4 drive from the beach and the stunningly beautiful bay with its incredible 'aquarium' for snorkelling. The reed chalets, which are very basic but comfortable, each have twin beds and an en-suite shower and toilet. This is a no-frills, non-luxury destination. We recommend it for adventurous travellers that like to get away from 'civilisation'. We offer DB&B or self-catering accommodation (the kitchen is communal).
